Early 3.0 Playlists: 2009-2011

Red Rocks – 7.31.09 (Graham Lucas)

About a month ago, a friend of mine who missed the first three-plus years of 3.0 was saying how Phish wasn’t very musically proficient in these years. I begged to differ. First, I started listing great stuff from each year in a group text, but then I decided to show him instead of tell. With the incredibly useful LivePhish app, I created extended playlists of the most relevant jams from these years. In addition to sharing them with some friends, I figured I’d share them with anyone and everyone who’d want to listen as a reminder of how exciting these years actually were. I find that 2009, 2010 and 2011 get a bad rap. Though the band was less consistent during this early comeback era, they did produce quite a bit of good music.

These playlists got quite long, so I most often included only the songs that had the jams and not the come down songs, so some tracks have abrupt endings, but in the end this doesn’t prove too obtrusive. If you have the LivePhish app, these links will open the playlists in your app. Enjoy!

One year cig free today, not one puff. Feeling great. Saved $3600 in the process and regained 91 days of life. Gotta make em count.

Vapebraham.Kaya. phantom organist breakdown from pg 84:::::

Trey’s doin pretty damn cool with this approach to the trio.

He’s doin a lot more in terms of sound diversity that he’s leaving in the loops he’s playin over.

His new rig is super capable of that stuff.

Like often it sounds like an organ is accompanying him.
He gets that with the POG-2 (and of course having a Leslie and the univibe pedal)
But the POG means polyphonic octave generator. So it tracks multiple notes in a way that, for example, the Mutron wouldn’t give you.

You can play chords and it’ll generate octaves above and/or below it.
And it has these (essentially) tone bars. A series of adjustable slides that represent the different frequencies. Just like a B3.. so you can pull out all these stops across the frequency series..

Bringing in low or high notes. when you play a chord on it.. it really can sound like an organ.

So he gets some sounds going with that in the right key for the jam, and loops em.
Then when he’s soloing on top with a different tone and the delay creating an echo of his lead, there’s all these other sounds in the mix and it can sound a lot like another player.

Pretty bad ass@Trey. He’s doin an awesome job of adding enough different elements in the loops to really bring some nuances to his accompaniment.
Cool that is rig so so powerful now to do that.

Also he’s got that Tremolo pedal for more sounds.. and in general.. since his Baker’s rig change.. anything looped or delayed or has a time based effect (reverb, tremolo).. can be speed or pitch adjusted with a variety of expression pedals.

    Junior D – Lean To [6.18]

    https://www.mixcloud.com/JuniorD/junior-d-lean-to-618/

The first of two mixes inspired by times up the hill in Vermont. The lean to is a strange and wonderful place, and to get there you must be brave, attentive and prepared. One does not cross a rope bridge at night with no light. Don’t fall off the cliff.

Sorry, one other note, this is by far the most “out there” thing I’ve ever done, so use accordingly. I didn’t post the tracklist in hopes people would just give it a spin be surprised. Probably not good office music. Appropriate for the weirder moments of your days. May it serve you well.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Story of the Ghost, Tom Marshall and a guest call up Trey and most of the episode is just Tom and Trey going through SOTG song by song and talking about each one, going off on lots of little tangents that often include some cool stories
