Early 3.0 Playlists: 2009-2011

Red Rocks – 7.31.09 (Graham Lucas)

About a month ago, a friend of mine who missed the first three-plus years of 3.0 was saying how Phish wasn’t very musically proficient in these years. I begged to differ. First, I started listing great stuff from each year in a group text, but then I decided to show him instead of tell. With the incredibly useful LivePhish app, I created extended playlists of the most relevant jams from these years. In addition to sharing them with some friends, I figured I’d share them with anyone and everyone who’d want to listen as a reminder of how exciting these years actually were. I find that 2009, 2010 and 2011 get a bad rap. Though the band was less consistent during this early comeback era, they did produce quite a bit of good music.

These playlists got quite long, so I most often included only the songs that had the jams and not the come down songs, so some tracks have abrupt endings, but in the end this doesn’t prove too obtrusive. If you have the LivePhish app, these links will open the playlists in your app. Enjoy!

Df, we are too tired. 3.0 been going forever There’s not much not to like anymore. Just recycled jokes and good times in person. Can I move to BC?

  2. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

    Can I move to California?

  3. Stoney Case Says:

Yes, eh!. I have a job for you already!! You can stay at my spot in Oakland for starters. I’ll be your wingman.

Looks like there was webcast last night on treys Facebook?

  5. Drew Cluley Says:

Thats not last nights show on Treys FB page. Set list diesn’t match. Also keyboard player makes them not a trio. Sounding good though..

  6. Drew Cluley Says:

Correction: that is last nights set. I guess Ray is back. I was thinking the set listed on p158 was last night…I forget there is only 1 page of comments a day lately. That should chance shortly… Happy Sunday all.

Had to take 12 hours for the post show glow to wear off. It was real last night. So here we are.

The show opened in my hometown of Marshfield, Massachusetts under a perfect cool summer sunset. The perfect backdrop to kick into a fun if not tame, Blaze On. The show rolled on with a couple other Trey staples in Cayman and Pigtail. Nothing to see here.

Then, the show really got going and we produced our first top tier highlight of the night. An absolutely raunchy Jibboo. Things took off quickly and never let up. Being only 5 people back, I noticed rather quickly that Trey was feeding off the energy of his real fans and ignoring the somewhat chatty younger crowd who had no idea what they were in for. This Jibboo just went off. Not really sure how to explain it. Everything’s right came next, quite spacey and fun. Worth a listen.

Here’s where things got a little weird. Someone in the front row started requesting songs. And I think it threw off the vibe of the set a little bit. Farmhouse followed, and if you didn’t use it as a breather, good for you.

Dark and Down. DING DING! Here comes the McMillen 12 Step. I like this thing. Show highlight.

Sand – jetty funk was on point. Great dance party in my area.

Bug, standard, but always welcomed for this fan.

A rambunctiously funky Undermind followed. Another show highlight. Ruined by the girl next to me who wanted to dance and flirt. SLUTS.

First Tube. A clear nod to the surf-inspired festival grounds.

Waste acoustic, followed by more. Fun fact here. I kept yelling “MORE” at Trey, it’s something I’ve done for years and years now when he or the rest of the band is killing it, I think they assume I’m requesting the song More. I’m not. But we got it anyways. Lovely.

Next came a push on encore that featured some stop start jamming and a healthy dose of shred. A lot of kids under the age of 25 got their first experience last night. Kinda cool.

CONCLUSION: This is going to be really good for Treys playing. RIP The Gorge.

    Thanks for letting me share.

Anyone have a 3 day stands and rather have a 3 day field for dicks?

  10. DryIceFactory Says:

Another fun fact, Trey thanked the great people of Mass General for their service in helping Ray recover from a brain tumor before More. Chatty Trey is my favorite Trey. I could listen to the guy talk about ant farms for an hour. Anyways, back to my point. The girl next to me was a nurse there, and balled her eyes out at this. Just a cool moment.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate all of our friends and family who work in healthcare today. For Trey.

Due to changing circumstances of my crew, It appears that I am going to end up with at least one set of extras for Tahoe, and perhaps two.

Trey story from Central Park (lifted from PT but I assume accurate):

“Trey tells story how his parents let him take the train at 14 years old to penn station for guitar lessons on Central Park south. He can see the the building from the stage. Crowd goes nuts. He goes on to say how he loved walking thru Times Square.. in a devilish voice. And it was was different then he commented. He’d walk by the music shops on 48th and wind up on 59th to play. He thanked his parents who were in the crowd and confessed he bought a fake ID. And that, that was the worst thing he ever did”

  20. aj Says:

“And that was the worst thing he ever did.”

  22. DryIceFactory Says:

@df my friend Dan owns levitate brand, all the related shops and puts on the festi. Good local Marshfield boy who doubles as one of the best surfers in New England. Great kid. I was up close for the whole set. Still glowing.

  23. Stoney Case Says:

Ignoring flirtatious women folk at a trey show #DoesNotCompute but then again, I’m a flirt myself

  24. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

  25. Stoney Case Says:
