Early 3.0 Playlists: 2009-2011

Red Rocks – 7.31.09 (Graham Lucas)

About a month ago, a friend of mine who missed the first three-plus years of 3.0 was saying how Phish wasn’t very musically proficient in these years. I begged to differ. First, I started listing great stuff from each year in a group text, but then I decided to show him instead of tell. With the incredibly useful LivePhish app, I created extended playlists of the most relevant jams from these years. In addition to sharing them with some friends, I figured I’d share them with anyone and everyone who’d want to listen as a reminder of how exciting these years actually were. I find that 2009, 2010 and 2011 get a bad rap. Though the band was less consistent during this early comeback era, they did produce quite a bit of good music.

These playlists got quite long, so I most often included only the songs that had the jams and not the come down songs, so some tracks have abrupt endings, but in the end this doesn’t prove too obtrusive. If you have the LivePhish app, these links will open the playlists in your app. Enjoy!

Thanks for making me revisit Aph Carini, ROC! So much new music since then…

Totally missed the Chest Fever tease before… I love the way they move through the different sections and the flowing slippery quality of the music… it pairs really well with Simple too… that was a great set! Happy to have couched toured it with Rooster!

BGCA Carini still wins version of summer for me but just because I can’t get enough of that heavy Fish on closed hi-hat funk style…

All Summer 2018 Carinis mix would work well I think…

  8. Stoney Case Says:

Are we all still in agreement that the gorge twist is the Jam of the tour to this point?

  9. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

    Good job Frankie

Can I start holding up signs at shows like this?

    MPP second set opener?!?!?

  11. Light Glaze Says:

    Segue signs?

  12. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

No but you can have a “slow llama” sign apparently

    Meant BG1

Stoney, C&P>Twist best combo followed by BG Mercury>Carini, followed by LA Jibboo>Fuego, followed by ATX EHJHT>Disease

    Jam couplets

Wild card and maybe my fav combo of tour, Gorge Fluff, Melt. Both total surprises, perfect ending to Gorge 3 day run. Melt best ambient space jam of tour so far.

  16. Gumbomaniac Says:

Hey @lilumb if you were serious about the music theory lessons, I’d be interested. Can I hit you up off the bb?

  17. Turkey Leg Says:

IMO Gorge Twist is in the conversation for jam of tour and universally revered by everyone aside from @piggy stardust. No real surprise there. “Piano lounge” segment in the last 2 minutes after Xeyed quotes is unlike anything I’ve ever heard. Would’ve liked another 5 mins, although the resolution with waves is a-okay too.

    Alph Carini is my J.O.T.

@Willowed… I feel ya big time. It’s all about timing. Life is timing. Timing is off for you. Only mistake was not offering ur wrist band here first, haha.

  20. Light Glaze Says:

    Alph Carini. Win.

I need to spin the ATL again obvs, was the first time this tour in a big jam where I felt like they were moving thru tropes.
Like it had the stabs with the looping thing that trey hadn’t done over tour yet.

I’ll proper head space and re spin.

Surely a dope carini , my initial listen just literally gave the 1st time this year where I felt like they were turning to big 2017 type things.

  22. little umbrellas Says:

^missed a key word there. Need to respin the ATL Carini

  23. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

    That was a huge mistake.

  24. MrCompletely Says:

first big arc of the Alpharini is playbook Phish. The latter big arc in it is the part I just call Sherman – the jam that burned Atlanta to the ground. I think it’s amazing and is my fav thing til something dethrones it.

There are several big ones I def hear as all in the same ballpark

  25. MrCompletely Says:

Sherman is my top jaw on the floor “how are those noises even real” moment, if the vid is one of the ones out there it’s prob worth watchin
