Early 3.0 Playlists: 2009-2011

Red Rocks – 7.31.09 (Graham Lucas)

About a month ago, a friend of mine who missed the first three-plus years of 3.0 was saying how Phish wasn’t very musically proficient in these years. I begged to differ. First, I started listing great stuff from each year in a group text, but then I decided to show him instead of tell. With the incredibly useful LivePhish app, I created extended playlists of the most relevant jams from these years. In addition to sharing them with some friends, I figured I’d share them with anyone and everyone who’d want to listen as a reminder of how exciting these years actually were. I find that 2009, 2010 and 2011 get a bad rap. Though the band was less consistent during this early comeback era, they did produce quite a bit of good music.

These playlists got quite long, so I most often included only the songs that had the jams and not the come down songs, so some tracks have abrupt endings, but in the end this doesn’t prove too obtrusive. If you have the LivePhish app, these links will open the playlists in your app. Enjoy!

It’s weird to see ads on my facebook offering payment plans for a Phish show. Still wish I could go though.

heady, of course it isn’t actually schwag. it’s got about 10 minutes in the middle I don’t like. The rest is either standard-great 1974 Playin’ jams or that one little jam segment that’s super nice. It’s more that there are a lot of other Playins I like a lot more. Oakland 6.8.74 crushes it imo much less the late 72s

most just enjoying a good hot take

Shred, that show circulates only as fragments – some is missing, then there’s a piece with the Janis Lovelight, then another with the last chunk. I can upload any/all the flacs if you like but here’s that segment on a YT vid I made:

great attics and cumberland, then the unique NFA > Stephen jam. In this era the canonical NFA pairings hadn’t set in stone and they were experimenting with where to take the jams. I think this jam into Stephen is just spectacular with unreal fat guitar sound, a brilliant transition cued by Bobby, and then there’s this little great little intro segment to Stephen, before and into the first verse especially, that just has an amazing light, swinging bounce to it, so different from the sometimes cumbersome feel of the song…

lot of punch in the lil Stephen jam itself taboot
