Early 3.0 Playlists: 2009-2011

Red Rocks – 7.31.09 (Graham Lucas)

About a month ago, a friend of mine who missed the first three-plus years of 3.0 was saying how Phish wasn’t very musically proficient in these years. I begged to differ. First, I started listing great stuff from each year in a group text, but then I decided to show him instead of tell. With the incredibly useful LivePhish app, I created extended playlists of the most relevant jams from these years. In addition to sharing them with some friends, I figured I’d share them with anyone and everyone who’d want to listen as a reminder of how exciting these years actually were. I find that 2009, 2010 and 2011 get a bad rap. Though the band was less consistent during this early comeback era, they did produce quite a bit of good music.

These playlists got quite long, so I most often included only the songs that had the jams and not the come down songs, so some tracks have abrupt endings, but in the end this doesn’t prove too obtrusive. If you have the LivePhish app, these links will open the playlists in your app. Enjoy!

I thought the first half of Tweezer was genuinely excellent. The build to a peak second half was good but typical, complete with stabby section

Tricker bailed on No Man’s right when it got really good but still a nice jam

Loved the Jiboo. Great multi plateau build to it.

“There’s no way that Hampton split doesn’t suck”

there’s nothing to do with a statement like this except ignore it

  3. sumodie Says:

Just realized Albany 2 really did suck as I noticed that some asshat ran over our wild bunny. Fuck Trey in Albany! Fuck that bunny killer!

Time to prep for George Winston at 7pm tonight

    One wild bunny still left…hopefully

Jibboo since Bakers has been silky smooth butter. Loved last nights. Still prefer the LA version, but count me as a fan of Jibboo

sure sumo – I just mean the word “bias” itself doesn’t really capture it. It implies distortion. My take is that the in room experience is the undistorted or primary experience and that the distant streamer or later playback is less “real” in some sense. Even though it *seems* more objective it really isn’t, so applying “bias” to one experience and not the other is just weird semantically

I’m not trying to turn it into a whole thing though

LA jiboo is mad smooth. Felt like last night’s peaked harder? Maybe not. Def both great.

It may have. That first several mins of LA version so laid back. Love it. To me that Jibboo saved the set last night. Made it an above avg Saturday Night Special. Had Trey allowed the No Mans to stick with the groove Fish laid down that’s a great set. Cavern fake our ending was clever. Suzy nod to Stoney extra special. Ha

  8. Vapebraham Says:

    Ahhhhhh. Eagles 4thq collapse

  9. MrCompletely Says:

first set was way above avg for a Special as well, it had that feel but with good song choices

agreed since the 4th quarter was choppy it needed something with sauce and Jiboo fit the bill

anything other than a Special of some kind was incredibly unlikely last night so that was a pretty good result I though overall. I enjoyed it for sure

Friday was spacecamp though and that’s always the winner at Chez Completely

    bustout Sunday? more campout?

    CHURCH!!!!!!!

I have to ponder if Albany lacked because of the reports of some douchebag starting a fight a couple rows back from the rail. Maybe, just maybe, that was why Wilson was played. From my understanding the ass hat hit someone, went all crazy, then after his bros escorted him almost out he ran back and clocked someone again. Chompers can chomp up front if that’s their thing but starting fights at a show or anywhere else for that matter is inexcusable.

    Absolutely LOVING the GA experience
Every EVERY SHOW should be GA. It’s been SO amazing TJ bounce around the room.
Mothership feels like old school MSG

    “Bingos, UIC Ghost #neverforget”

UIC Tweezer was worse. Ghost left me in shock. Tweezer was the first time I’ve genuinely been angry at a show. So yeah, Thanks for the reminder. Can’t get worse than those.

  17. Stoney Case Says:

They play Oh Kee Pa and it goes over flys head

  18. Fly Says:

it was sort of cringeworthy when Trey dropped out for like three or four bars but he just smiled and gestured to Page

kind of got back on track later but not so much

This kind of stuff doesn’t really bother me its more that I knew Suzy was coming and I just hate Suzy lol almost as much as I hate Possum

oh crap now I jinxed myself

  19. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

But phishm you’ve threatened to fight me many times

  20. BingosBrother Says:

Last night’s Tweezer though. Love the drop down and build up. Tre Magnifique.

  21. BingosBrother Says:

Really would love to catch a TMWSIY. Very underrated tune imo. Especially with that funky ass Avenu Malkenu sandwiched in there. Really gets me going.

  22. Frankie Says:

Less UIC Ghost talk, more UIC ‘98 Gin talk

  23. Frankie Says:

I thought YEM was coming after Oh Kee Pah, must have had the Island Tour on my mind…

  24. HarryHood Says:

Im with Fly….. Everyone around me was excited when Oh Kee Pa started and I knew it probably just meant another damn Suzy….

  25. BingosBrother Says:

Oh Lee Pay YEN is $$$. More Curveballs like that would be sweet.

More 94 Tweezer talk. My fab jam of all times at times.
