I’m finally in the research office with SPSS. I am finishing up some work, and then I’ll run my two spot stats for 2017-2018.

Miner’s search function on the top page is still a great resource:

Admittedly I couldn’t find a “Best Sand Jams” entry but y’all already know to look in 1999. I’m also partial to Dick’s 2012 Sand too.

Looks like at least a few of Miner’s “best of” download links are still active too.

Alpine Valley: daytime recs? Besides the usual when Phish camping with friends. What about a daytime trip to Milwaukee…? I’ve never been before.

I know it’s only February but I’m trying to gauge whether I should convince G to either come with or stay home. Not everyone is cut out to be a 3 day wook.

  16. aj Says:

    Hi Sumo,
The thing about Alpine Valley is, it is a grind and the cops are the worst. Where would you be staying? What I would suggest to make it as pleasant as possible would be to stay in the Lake Geneva area, there are tons of condo rentals and hotels in the area, and then either find a party bus that goes to and from (some of the hotels have them) or set up a driver. The general area there is sort of Wisco redneck and the venue no longer allows camping, though some of the neighboring homes/farms do, but have no idea how that is done.

I love Alpine when the factors are all good, and those factors are 1) pav seats and 2) staying at the adjacent lodge. Everything else is a grind.

PS. super happy you are planning to come! Not sure if you are aware, but JRAD is playing Northernly Island the night before too if you want to make it ultramidwestwookrun.

  18. aj Says:

Sorry, last thing – Milwaukee’s art museum on the lake is world class, beautiful building (Same architect as the Oculus in NYC), and has very easy parking. If you go to Milwook, I highly rec a visit.

    AJ with the Midwest knowledge.

If ya like mid ninety’s post rock Euro psych pop

Stereolab’s Refried Ectoplasm will hit the spot.

Put me in the camp of absolute love for Dec ’99 Sands. I’ve stated this before, but Raleigh ’99 set 2 is one of my all time favorite Phish sets. No in house bias, either.

  21. aj Says:

Heady, my man. If I am not mistaken you like to skate a bit here and there. Check out these heaters.

AJ, last summer thru one of my Telluride buddies I befriended a guy who grew up near Alpine. The last decade or so he’s been hosting 200-300 friends who camp at his parents’s place for Dead / Phish Alpine shows. And so this summer I’ll be camping there and riding buses to/fro the shows (camping is invite only but I might be able to invite some BBers to camp with us; unsure just yet).

Alpine doesn’t sound like the best fit for G but maybe we’ll add a couple days for hanging in Chicago, I dunno. Since Phish has forced me to plan (& buy tix) this early, I figured it wasn’t too early to ask for Alpine recs.

And thanks for the Milwookie art museum rec!

  23. RoosterPizza Says:

Damn, AJ! That old school tiger deck may make its way into my lineup.

  24. drew cluley Says:

Thanks for the Alpine info ~ popping my cherry there this year.

Agree also that Raleigh 99 set 2 is $$$$
    Also delicious Jerry!!

I need to reconsider my sampling methods. I’ll be in touch with updates….
