11.4.98 - Denver

As we prepare for the next run of Colorado Phish, here is a show from Denver that followed up the infamous McNichols stand of ’97. A dark-horse offering amidst the meat of Fall ’98, check “Piper > 2001” in the second set for the standout segment of the show. The first set’s “Bathtub Gin” and “Yamar” are solid versions while “Frankie Says” developed into an ambient jam a la Fall ’98 on the way to a set-punctuating “David Bowie.” Coming directly after Utah’s “Dark Side” show and Halloween in Vegas, it’s no surprise this night has lived in the shadows for so long.

I: Buried Alive > Character Zero, Guyute, Bathtub Gin, Ya Mar, Birds of a Feather, Brian and Robert, Frankie Says > David Bowie

II: Runaway Jim, The Moma Dance > Piper > Also Sprach Zarathustra > Chalk Dust Torture, Loving Cup

E: The Squirming Coil

Type II Trivia Results:

8.10.10 (W.Rogell)

In trying to make this round easier, I think I accidentally made it harder. But this week’s champion, “Ginseng” Jeff D is always up for a challenge. After placing second last week, Jeff takes home this week’s trophy by scoring 15 points – 6 more than the closest contender. This week I got nearly thirty entries – 3 times as many as last week – so thank you to everyone for playing! This game could grow into a nice little weekly tradition here on Phish Thoughts. We shall see. For now, here are the answers and the standings.

Mud Island

Taking this week’s “Jam of the Day” theme right through “Weekend Nuggets,” this installment is all about ‘Tweezers.” This Memphis show from Summer ’95 contains the “Mud Island Tweezer,” one of the most extended and iconic explorations of the song in their career. At a time when the band continued pushing boundaries of jam-length and abstraction, this “Tweezer” clocked in at over 50 minutes, but when listening, boredom never comes into play. One of the most famous versions taboot, if you haven’t heard this, clear an hour of your time, sit back, and relax. Phish dropped one for the record books on the banks of the Mississippi.

I: Don’t You Wanna Go, Gumbo, NICU, Mound, Cavern, Possum, All Things Reconsidered, Amazing Grace*, The Horse > Silent in the Morning, Spock’s Brain, Split Open and Melt

II: 2001 > Poor Heart, Tweezer > Acoustic Army, While My Guitar Gently Weeps

7.31.09 (G.Lucas)

Type II Trivia Results: With little competition on day 2, “Rippin'” Ross Bellenoit ran away with this contest with a remarkable 26 out of 30 points! Identifying every track and only missing a couple specific dates – what I thought was most impressive is that he only missed one year out of ten. By blowing away the competition, Ross wins his choice of CD: Trey’s TAB at the Tabernacle or Mike’s Moss. Kudos, Ross! Jeff D. put in a  a noble effort, nailing half the selections, while Brad P. rounded out the double-digit scorers with 11. The entire results  and answers are below. (If your name is not listed, it is because you scored no points. Better luck next time.) Thanks for playing!

  1. Ross B. – 26 pts
  2. Jeff D. – 15
  3. Brad P. – 11
  4. Ethan W. – 8
  5. Andrew B, Lex P – tied w/4

O'Connell Center - Gainesville, FL

In the days following their transformative Halloween in Atlanta, Phish headed back to Florida with Karl Perazzo along for his third and fourth consecutive shows. After their well-documented escapade at Coral Sky in West Palm Beach, the band played this show at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Perazzo played his final two sets before Phish traveled to the Midwest, off and running on their percussive pathway to 1997. Remain In Light took immediate effect as the band continued their collaborative grooving. Check out the late-set “Tweezer” for a show-stopping  highlight featuring this  emerging style of improv.

Jam of the Weekend:

Phish blew up this second set “Mike’s Song” in Tallahassee, Florida, the show before Halloween. The band got some down-low practice during “Mike’s” second jam as they grooved significantly on Talking Head’s “Houses In Motion.” With Karl Perazzo on board, this piece really took off.

"Fee" - 8.12.10 (M. Stein)

After a sloppy opening frame, Phish came back with one of their more creatively constructed sets of tour. “Drowned” brought the band into a new-school rhythmic-ambient jam, while they connected  “Jibboo > Gin” with a seamless segue. Trey left the whale behind on this second set “Bathtub Gin” using his Ocedoc to carve melodies into the summer night. After a quality mid-set interlude, Phish capped the evening by deconstructing “Split” into “Dog-Faced Boy,” and an impressive “Hood” which passes through an unorthodox segment of darkness on  the way to the top. All-in-all, this show is flying under the radar due to larger explosions at The Greek and Alpine Valley.

Our audio recap of Leg II starts with the tour opener in Berkeley, California. Kicking off the run with one of their most impressive multi-night stands since their return, Phish’s shows at The Greek provided some of the most memorable jams from the entire summer. The band’s playing grew more cohesive over each of the three nights, and here is the night one.

Jam of the Weekend:

Down With Disease > Free” 8.5.10 II

This “Disease” jam gave us a sneak-preview of an improvisational style that blossomed through Leg Two – fast-paced, yet self-less and patient,  jamming in which Fishman threw down intricate, changing beats while other band members painted layers of texture and ambient sound and melody. The first significant jam of tour brought us into some truly new-school Phish.
