Weekend Nuggets: Fuji Rock ’99

DOWNLOADS OF THE WEEKEND:

fujiThis weekend we have the two headlining gigs from Phish’s first trip to Japan in Summer ’99.  Playing on the isolated “Field of Heaven” stage, Phish treated the predominantly Japanese audience with two blistering shows, carrying their momentum from their extensive US tour to the Far East.  Highlights abound throughout these two shows, including two phenomenal second sets.  The 31st was held down by the huge “2001 > Bowie,” opening the flowing second set with some extended improv.  A late set “Fluffhead” fir perfectly as a cathartic release to this frame.

The last night of Summer ’99 was certainly one of the best.  With a second half that boasted a “Tweezer,” a “Mike’s Groove,” and a “YEM,” the last set of the summer was chock full of musical fireworks. In addition to the well crafted second set, the first read like a “Who’s Who” of old-school Phish songs.  This is a show that is required for any complete collection, and its a SBD, taboot, taboot.

  5. c0wfunk Says:

I traded some special cookies for cds of the 8-1-99 show in the Hampton 03 lot, the dude told me it was his favorite show. I was surprised to hear how different of a vibe it had than the summer 99 shows. Great energy, the band is clearly excited to be in new surroundings. thanks for the 7-31!

  10. contact420 Says:

There has been a lot of debate on whether these Japan sbd’s are actually soundboards. Most of us believe that they are just great sounding F.O.B.’s that people have missed labled as boards. The person to confirm this with is Jason Sobel. I’m sure Mr. Miner could get in-touch with Jason for the confirmation.

  11. Matso Says:

That montage is really dreamy. I’ve never sought these shows out, but am very excited now to hear them. Thanks Mr Miner!

  12. contact420 Says:

And since we’re on the subject of Summer ’99 here is a new source to circulation for 7/03/99 Lakewood Amp. Schoeps MK4V/M 222’s tubes, this is a sick source.

  19. full tour: announced! Says:

^^ thanks for the new source to that lakewood 7-3-99 show…those two shows were dank. I remember that huge first set, especially the gumbo and the tube and the 1st complete meatstick! Then the second sets Twist around > piper was ground breaking at the time! Awesome memories…thanks

  20. full tour: announced! Says:

not to mention the encores….bill bailey w/ pages dad….and the hood that featured one of the best glowstick showers i have ever seen!

  21. full tour: announced! Says:

can i call someone at hampton next weekend and listen in via their cell phone? That way i can at least feel like i’m there for a few seconds….

  22. Billy Breathes Says:

    Nassau 2003. Whoa.

  23. Baxter Says:

@ Billy Breathes: I was at Coventry, and I knew Trey was messing up Glide, but I never saw that video before, and it is brutal to watch. I know the emotion right out of Velvet was huge, but OMG it looks bad on screen. But after seeing 2 TAB shows (and Orpheum I was in the front row center the whole time), I know that Trey will be on top of his game for this tour. I mean, the guy would give his left nut to play “You Enjoy Myself” five times in a row every day until he dies. LOL.

  24. Billy Breathes Says:

    @ Baxter…

Agreed 100%. Just trying to keep perspective out here.

    Hip Hip HooTREY!!

  25. Baxter Says:

Destiny Unbound from Ithaca 2/14/1991- (Valentine’s Day)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3i2lM3p27o

Why is this song so great?

At the end of this song Fish throws out the keys from the Plymouth Voyager he used to drive around the band in, and a guy named Toast ended up with the station wagon.
