For this holiday weekend, where many will find their way to one beach or another, I am featuring the rest of the Jones Beach run- 6.2 and 6.4.  While both of these shows had their definite high points, they each had their rough spots as well.  The band continued to unveil their new songs after dropping three debuts at Fenway’s tour opener.  The third show, 6.5, was posted on Friday.

The second show of tour sported a superb first set, with the classic, “Runaway,” Foam” opening combo.  The “Timber” got surprisingly nasty, while the “Cities” was as thick as the band got all summer long.  But the no-brainer highlight of the set is the delicate, and awing “Reba.”  My favorite of all any 3.0 version, this one could hang with some older versions as well.  Finally, the band broke out “If I Could” for the first time since PNC 2000, closing the set with a gorgeous rendition that was divergent in rhythm and guitar work.  This is one tour highlight that has been wholly overlooked by all.  We’ve talked about this “Hood” once or twice, I think.

I: Runaway Jim, Foam, Stealing Time From The Faulty Plan*, Timber Ho, Cities, Driver, Reba, Possum, Farmhouse, If I Could

II: Mike’s Song > Simple > Wolfman’s Brother > Weekapaug Groove, When the Circus Comes, Kill Devil Falls*, Harry Hood, Loving Cup

E: Suzy Greenburg

The second show at Jones Beach was the leanest of the three, with the first set “Ghost” being the only jam with staying power.  Because of Asheville’s more extensive tour highlight, this “Ghost” hasn’t gotten its propers.  And combined with “Antelope” to close a set?!  That’s a first. Check it out.  Set two is, well, pretty, pretty… pretty, pretty, pretty…pretty thin.

I: Grind, The Divided Sky, Ocelot, The Squirming Coil, Punch You in the Eye, Dirt, NICU, Ghost, Run Like an Antelope

II: Water in the Sky, Birds of a Feather, Drowned > Meatstick, Time Turns Elastic, Waste, You Enjoy Myself

E: Rock and Roll

  1. Jon Says:

Colonel: thank you for your service. I have no idea what you are dealing with on a regular basis, but I know at a very minimum it involves being a long way from home and the people you love. Know that I think about your sacrifice appreciatively. I hope for a quick and safe return for you, so you can catch our favorite band while they’re still around.

  2. Mr.Miner Says:

dates look much more believable with this middle segment!
