For this holiday weekend, where many will find their way to one beach or another, I am featuring the rest of the Jones Beach run- 6.2 and 6.4.  While both of these shows had their definite high points, they each had their rough spots as well.  The band continued to unveil their new songs after dropping three debuts at Fenway’s tour opener.  The third show, 6.5, was posted on Friday.

The second show of tour sported a superb first set, with the classic, “Runaway,” Foam” opening combo.  The “Timber” got surprisingly nasty, while the “Cities” was as thick as the band got all summer long.  But the no-brainer highlight of the set is the delicate, and awing “Reba.”  My favorite of all any 3.0 version, this one could hang with some older versions as well.  Finally, the band broke out “If I Could” for the first time since PNC 2000, closing the set with a gorgeous rendition that was divergent in rhythm and guitar work.  This is one tour highlight that has been wholly overlooked by all.  We’ve talked about this “Hood” once or twice, I think.

I: Runaway Jim, Foam, Stealing Time From The Faulty Plan*, Timber Ho, Cities, Driver, Reba, Possum, Farmhouse, If I Could

II: Mike’s Song > Simple > Wolfman’s Brother > Weekapaug Groove, When the Circus Comes, Kill Devil Falls*, Harry Hood, Loving Cup

E: Suzy Greenburg

The second show at Jones Beach was the leanest of the three, with the first set “Ghost” being the only jam with staying power.  Because of Asheville’s more extensive tour highlight, this “Ghost” hasn’t gotten its propers.  And combined with “Antelope” to close a set?!  That’s a first. Check it out.  Set two is, well, pretty, pretty… pretty, pretty, pretty…pretty thin.

I: Grind, The Divided Sky, Ocelot, The Squirming Coil, Punch You in the Eye, Dirt, NICU, Ghost, Run Like an Antelope

II: Water in the Sky, Birds of a Feather, Drowned > Meatstick, Time Turns Elastic, Waste, You Enjoy Myself

E: Rock and Roll

That’s what hawkinbj posted late last night ….???? I try around 5 am and the site was and has been down ever since. I was hoping the “rumor” was that Fall Tour would be announced.

  5. ColonelJoy Says:

.com is down because they’re announcing a new band member to join them on tamborine, cowbell, and silky smooth, prop the ankles on your shoulders legs, Sarah Palin….

  6. Jen Says:

  9. Jerrydamule Says:

Happy Birthday Uncle Sam! We need to acknowledge that Freedom isn’t Free. So thanks to all those (i.e. Colonel) who have provided me the opportunity to criss cross this great country over the years, tour as if there were no tomorrow, and live while I’m young. If I may be so bold, I’d like to think that I’ve toured with a sense of “urgency” similar to which fishman plays the drums. the opportunity and blessings have not been lost on me, as I’m sure they have not been lost on you freaks
    tooooooooooooooooooooooooooor

  10. fishman's frock Says:

    ^^^ well said jerry

thanks to every soldier past and present that protect our way of life. your sacrifice is beyond commendable. thank you for allowing us to continue to live our lives of american freedom.

  11. In Flagrante Delicto Says:

I echo the shouts to those in service to better America, whether as a member of the Armed Services, as a teacher in the public schools, or even firefighters and (gasp) police (well, most of them). Happy Birthday, USA.

I’d be surprised if they dropped Fall tour on a holiday.

  12. BingosBrother Says:

Big props to the Colonel and all the rest. Happy 4th guys!

  13. smegma Says:

thanks for doing what you do colonel. let everyone over there know that the phisheads appreciate the sacrifice. by the way, how’s the pull out from the cities going? (think of london, people sleep, sleep in the daytime)

  14. Highway Bill Says:

America the beautiful. Happy 4th all!

  15. Walfredo Says:

Summer 99 was my lone full tour. Lakewood was a blast- hard to believe those 100 degree days in HotLanta were 10 years ago today!

I play these drums for thee- pah rum pa pum pum, rum pa pum pum… It sure was a great weekend- probably my favorite from the tour. Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe the Meatstick craze that swept the nation was announced on the 3rd?

  16. Exree Hipp Says:

After Miner’s mention of the 8/10/97 Hood in yesterday’s comments I went and had myself a re-listen. It is incredible! Beautifully unique in its minor key play. Everyone go check this out asap. Second set is a four-song blast too.

  17. c0wfunk Says:

been away on vacation this week and included phishthoughts in that vacation – but I wanted to stop in and say happy independence day to everyone out there – remember that phish is something that could only happen in America and as much as I’m often frustrated with this country and its citizens, it’s still the best of what’s around!

Thanks especially to our resident soldier coloneljoy – I may disagree with 75% of what you post, but I still respect and appreciate your service 😉

I fondly remember my 2 phishy 4th of july experiences in 99 and 00 and it’s hard to believe it’s been 10 years!! The Camden 7/4/00 show still registers in my top 10 shows seen list! The second set is one of those with that “flow” and continuity that is what makes my favorite sets my favorite sets. It’s weird but I really don’t remember the 99 shows much at all, but I was in a pretty negative personal relationship space that summer so I’m probably blocking it out on purpose..

  18. colonerules Says:

Colonel…thanks for all you do…happy 4th. keep up the good work. My dads a vietnam vet and its these days i always think about the recognition of the daily things YOU do and sometimes goes unthought of.

  19. Phish...Yup Says:

Killing the 5th of July hangover with a solid little Hampton opener Fluffhead and Divided. It’s working nicely.

  20. Pence Says:

@Phish…Yup….I hear ya, Timber ho! made my dry heaves go away.

Stealing time from the faulty plan, Kill devil falls, Joy in the car….Im clearly getting really into these new songs. I cant believe that shit went down just less than a month ago. Cant wait for Late Summer into Fall. Who wouldve really thought that they would put out these quality songs this late in their career. Lyrically its better than undermind, round room, and story of the ghost. But honestly doesnt compare to anything earlier. Poppy, bluesy, classical, and poppy. Thats right I said poppy twice. Cause thats what it is, and I think I like it.

  21. Pence Says:

Im talking Timber Ho from JB1. Rock and Roll Timber Ho

  22. Exree Hipp Says:

Yeah I am looking forward to the new album a lot. I think the album versions of Sugar Shack and Faulty Plan are going to be hot.

  23. fromthetub Says:

Does anyone know when the album is slated to be released? The date was pushed back from late July, right?

  24. lot rat Says:

july 28 was the last I heard.

    tour is coming again…

  25. lot rat Says:
