The Gorge 8.8.09 (W.Rogell)

The Gorge 8.8.09 (W.Rogell)

Here we have Saturday night’s Gorge show, an affair that showcased Phish’s more rock-based jamming.  The clear high point of the night was the monster “Rock and Roll” that opened the second set, which remained a summer highlight.  A centerpiece “YEM” anchored the middle of the set in laid-back style, while a growing “Number Line” got into some significant late-set  improv, segueing into “Piper,” whose fast-paced jam closed the thematic set.

The first set featured an opening bust-out of “Mango Song,” included  a completely original take on “Tweezer” and made engaging runs through “Wolfman’s” and “Antelope,” with the latter standing out as a weekend highlight.  Definitely a show that delivered high-octane psychedelia- and several standout moments- this capped band’s first west coast run since 2003.  Enjoy the weekend folks!

No, but I have seen the 12-30-97 DVD.

I would really like to hear 12-29-97, that setlist looks incredible.

Moonshake – It was strange, I was browsing around my external looking for something and ended up finding the Walnut Creek DVD along with my 12-30-97 DVD and the 10-21-95 DVD. I’m stoked.

I have not seen the 10/21/95 DVD, but I have the audio and that show is awesome. I like 12/29 more than 12/30, but you gotta give it to that AC/DC Bag from that show. Killer. IMO 12/29 Set II is the best ever played. As a reviewer on livephish put it (Not word for word), “There is no Strange Design or Silent in the morning to slow the set. Just five of their hardest hitting songs back to back to back.”

    ^^^^

That was for who wanted Merriweather SBD’s

John – Yes. They open and close the first set with Tweeprise…Can’t get better than that. Hot Bowie as well.

Talking about 10-21-95^^^I have video but I don’t have straight audio, go figure…

  6. BrandonKayda Says:

The Gorge bass is good, but Mike’s bass on the Hartford SBD’s are kicking the back of my brain.

  7. BrandonKayda Says:

IS*, not are. Christ I’m starting English 10 Honors tomorrow and I still don’t have that shit down, haha.

  8. Pence Says:

My friends and I have started the “8” scavenger hunt. Find as many natural day to day 8’s as you can. Ive already found my garden hose form a natural 8. The “Hose 8” might be the symbol of the festival on the lush green grass of the polo grounds in indio?

  9. Mr.Miner Says:

I have one thing to say about glowstick wars: Boo.

  10. Mr. Completely Says:

always so ambiguous and mysterious, Miner….come on, tell us how you really feel

  11. halcyon Says:

I can’t believe how the audience appears to appreciate the glowstick wars more than what CK5 is doing. Although sometimes they look cool 😉

@lycan and larry; good to know im not the only one who thinks the camden sand is overrated!!

@moonshake, yes more krautrock for everyone!!! it is just cool to see what the german hippies were playing in the sixties and seventies, kind of like a droning, spacier alternative musical universe to the more folksy hippie sounds of america. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krautrock

not to drag the quantum physics back into the fray, but it useful to remember that our primate minds have a hard time comprehending this counter-intuitive universe;”the earth is round?”, “the earth is not the center of the universe?”, “little microscopic creatures make us ill?”, “reality is composed of billions of unimaginably small parts that act weird when we observe and try to measure them?” Common sense only takes us so far.

who brings in all those things anyway?
Another thing I don’t understand that the majority seems to be lovin up.
Way too many kids not playing nice and throwing on stage and shit.
I love when you see one just get chucked. Like a missile flying by. Funny shit.

  14. george de la porge Says:

    i mean http://www.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krautrock
    hope this one flies

glowsticks used to be cool in the nineties, not so cool any more. though on the other hand when i see glowstick wars at other shows it makes me think they only belong at phish shows. just dont throw them at our band!!!

  15. larry bird flu Says:

totally george. the tweezer is the highlight from camden for me

  16. Lycanthropist Says:

    agreed tweezer > sand

  17. jlkaz Says:

I feel like glowstick wars’ time has passed. At this point (and really it’s probably been that way for awhile) it seems more like people trying to force a moment to happen rather than letting it happen spontaneously. The thing Moonshine mentioned sounds neat, but the percentage of shows were stuff like that happens is pretty low, I’d think.

  18. joe Says:

re glowsticks: at least people are getting smarter and are bringing the softer kind instead of the old school hard plastic ones. I actually didn’t mind them at SPAC mostly because the fear of getting beaned by them wasn’t as bad since most were the soft kind.

“The Gorge bass is good, but Mike’s bass on the Hartford SBD’s are kicking the back of my brain.”

I thought Mike was astounding at the Gorge -sure hope the SBDs do him justice there. He was performing on a whole other level that weekend.

Glad to hear the Hartford SBD is treating Mike right.

  20. voopa Says:

“sure hope the SBDs do him justice there”

    They do. He sounds unbelievable.
