Overshadowed by Hartford and SPAC, the opening show of the summer’s final four-night run flowed well, had copious highlights, and set the tone for the end of tour.  The first set under the tent featured the darker bustouts of “Dinner and a Movie” and “My Friend” while carrying one of the outstanding “Wolfman’s” of summer and, in my opinion, the most engaging “Bowie” of the second leg.  The second set opened with a exploratory “Drowned,” sparking the unique highlight of “Drowned > Caspian > Rift.”  A smoking mid-set “Antelope” set up a revelatory “Fluffhead” closer.  This show is a real dark-horse, and deserves more attention than it has garnered.

I: Sample In A Jar, Dinner and a Movie, Wolfman’s Brother, My Friend, My Friend, Possum, Farmhouse, Sugar Shack, Brian And Robert, David Bowie, Bathtub Gin, How High The Moon, Golgi Apparatus

II: Drowned > Prince Caspian > Rift, The Horse > Silent in the Morning, Sparkle, Run Like An Antelope, Suzy Greenberg, Fluffhead

E: Joy, First Tube

Phish cohesively strung together this unique run of songs to begin the second set at Darien.  Look out for the standout “Drowned” jam- totally patient and fully realized.

Mitch, it’s on the top left side of the page, when you go to livephish.com
It’s a bit inconspicuous, kind of blends in.

  2. Neemor Says:

Now, I don’t get to hear soundchecks all that often…

I see them listed sometimes with setlists, but don’t often seek them out.

I’m curious how this little snippet from Hartford compares. It just seems so different and off-the-cuff, smooth and cool….
I wonder how much of an omen this was for the show.

    Lycan, can’t wait to listen.

  3. Leo Weaver Says:

thanks Neemor! To everyone who hasn’t done so, be kind to yourself and go get that Hartford soundcheck now…I hurt from laughing.

    Fi-ah! coconut juice…fi-ah!

@mitch, it’s kinda hard to find, let’s see if this works:

  9. Leo Weaver Says:

REALLY diggin’ Crepes and Bananas…NICE work on the keys there Lycan, “stash-esque” solo

  10. Lycanthropist Says:

thanks, Crepes and Bananas is one of my tunes. It always has the drum and keys break down in the middle. Its fun because the two of us can play whatever we want for a bit, til we come back to the full band jam.

  11. whole tour! Says:

revisiting the cypress “light up or leave me alone” > “jiboo jam”

if i had a one way time machine..i’d set it for 10am on 12-30-99, right when we finally got out of 17 hours of traffic and i first put my feet on that cool everglade grass.

“i downloaded darien lake and dropped into my itunes. when i rename the songs itunes sorts the songs alphabetically and I can’t put them back in the right order. is there a quick fix?”

In addition to putting the track number in the name of the file, there is also a data field for track number in itunes that you can use…but whatever floats your boat.

  17. fat bastard Says:

    thanks boys

  18. fat bastard Says:

listened to sugar shack for the first time. the vocals are a little blurry but trey’s guitar in the last few minutes is a beautiful dance

  19. MOonSHaKE Says:

the vital question of the day is:

Are you ready to GET BASSED!?!?

  20. Jer Says:

Sugar Shack is my favorite new song…and it’s not really even close. I also thought Access Me was easily the best song on Undermind…and Round Room on Round Room…detect a pattern here? Nowadays, IMO, Trey writes average-good ‘rock’ songs, while Mike continues to write GREAT songs, period. They are fresh and not at all formulaic. Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoy most, if not all of the new Trey written songs…they have soul…but there really isn’t anything -that- new or interesting about them. They are rock and roll. Mike writes songs that step outside the traditional bounds of rock songs…he’s not afraid to experiment with the song writing process and try different/innovative ideas. To me, his songs capture the classical essence of Phish really really well…and that’s what got me into this band in the first place.

  21. fat bastard Says:

mine is kill devil falls im probably the only one who thinks that.

  22. nonoyolker Says:

Ahhhh, lovely morning. It is raining lightly in Boston, I have a hot cup of coffee, some early Coleman Hawkins going, life is goooood.

I downloaded that Hartford soundcheck last night and laughed my ass off. Love Trey’s nonsense. Some lampost struttin’? Sure…

My buddy recently sent me some PT links with tons of soundchecks.

Check about 4/5 of the way down until the end here (http://www.phantasytour.com/trey/boards_thread.cgi?threadID=1806816&page=15)

and the top of the page here (http://www.phantasytour.com/phish/boards_thread.cgi?threadID=2005003&page=1)

The soundchecks from Lemonwheel are pretty sweet. There is some nice jamming

@ Lyca – downloading some Chance now. Is there any faster way? Uuuuuber slow…

  23. Marshall Says:

@ Fat Bastard -for every download I do, whether from here or another site, I edit the tracks individually to ensure there’s a track number in the ID3 file. I do this so I can keep the name’s simple and pure (which allows me to sort by specific songs across all shows if I want to).

In Windows if you right click on the track, select “Get Info” from the drop menu. Then select the “Info” tab, where you can fill in as much detail as you like.

Cumbersome but works for me. Just sharing what I do. Interested to hear if others have better methods than this (or the other one already mentioned with track number as part of the name)

  24. Mr.Miner Says:

really want to check out a Mike show….not gonna make it east however with all this Phish and a family to balance…I suspect they will be great

  25. Lycanthropist Says:

    @ nono

if you have an Instant Messaging progam such as AIM or YahooIM I can do it very quickly,

other than that im sorry, its song by song
