Weekend Nuggets: New Year’s Eve 1998

Official New Year's Run Poster - 1998

1998 New Year's Run Poster

DOWNLOADS OF THE WEEKEND:

After playing three out of four Holiday Run shows at The Garden in 1997, Phish decided to make it four of a kind in 1998. Staging an entire New Years’ Run in a single venue for the first time ever, the band chose the largest stage on which to do it. The peak of a incredible year of Phish, these four nights showcased the diverse jamming styles that defined the year. From groove-based improv to ambient jams, this show presented a microcosm of 1998. As a bonus re-post, I am including my favorite show from the run – 12.28 – an odyssey through darkness that included the inter-galactic warfare of “Carini > Wolfman’s.” With three MSG dates just announced, I can hardly wait to get back inside the greatest arena on earth. Here are some memories to tide you over.

II: NICU, Character Zero, Tweezer > Cities > Wading in the Velvet Sea, Run Like an Antelope, Frankenstein

III: Runaway Jim > Auld Lang Syne > Simple,  Harry Hood, Tweezer Reprise, Llama

E: While My Guitar Gently Weeps

*Phish debut.

Notes: Prince’s 1999 included dancers on stage and synchronized steps from Trey and Mike, who wound up lying on the stage with the dancers surrounding them. Weekapaug and Runaway Jim subsequently featured 1999 teases. For this show, the Holiday Run dancers’ costumes included a devil, a prostitute, and a pimp. The band jammed Runaway Jim until just before the New Year. The dancers reappeared throughout the crowd and handed out thousands of glowrings to the fans just before a grand balloon drop and pyrotechnics display at midnight. The band counted the crowd into the New Year before busting into Auld Lang Syne.

*Acoustic.

Notes: For the first show of the Holiday Run, the stage was decorated with flowers and sculptures. During the encore, parts of the set began to grow and sprout leaves. This stage setup was used for this show only, and disappeared for the rest of the run. Before Sleep, Fishman’s drum kit was moved to allow the crew to roll out a small mini-stage with a scaled-down drum set and a baby grand piano. Trey and Mike sat on stools and both played acoustic guitars. This acoustic set-up was used for Sleep, Albuquerque, and Driver. During the Wolfman’s jam, three people in inchworm-like costumes came on stage and danced for the rest of the set.

  1. Peach Says:

MSG sound. Question for those who have been to see Phish at MSG. is the sound good all over? I was at the Knoxville show and was disappointed with the sound in that venue. There was a bit of reverb where I was sitting. Do you get that at MSG?

  2. beepaphone Says:

I got $5 on Ocelot too for Cobo.

@ Robear/ anyone doing the Cobo > Cinncy leg.

    11/18 – cobo
11/19 – MMW at the Vogue in Indianapolis (probably one of the best club venues in the midwest)
    11/20-21 – Cinncy

    just sayin’ is all…

  3. mOoNsHaKe Says:

sumodie: thanks for the constructive input

  4. BrandonKayda Says:

So, the VA date is true…! I have to try to get to that. MSG would be incredible as well.

Either way I’m still happy because Dark Star Orchestra is doing a 2-night NYE stand in Baltimore, and I have a really good chance of going to that

  5. Lycanthropist Says:

    beep –

I wish i could pull that run… that looks like gold

  6. Phish...Yup Says:

That Albany show from 10/9/99 is making my Saturday.

Had great luck in summer lottery and am crossing my fingers again for 2 shows in philly, 2 in albany and 2 at MSG. Hell yeah fall tour

  7. Mitch Says:

    M, S, to the mutha freakin’ G!!!

Peach, the sound is poyfect. and not a bad seat in the house… even from behind the stage you get a cool view… Unless you are on that 4th tier someone was talking about.
I just wanna get inside. Put me anywhere, I’ll dance around those huge aisles if I have to. I’ve never lived this close to a Phish show, I refuse to be outside. See you people there. Phish Thoughts meet and greet that week. Two for tuesdays (2 for 1 stellas on tap plus plenty of other great beers) at House of Brews on 46th street the night before it all goes down. Plus they have one of those internet jukeboxes.

Miner, cant wait for the iPhone app. I’ll email ideas, I’ve been waiting for this!

  8. whole tour! Says:

sound in knoxville was perfect where i was at…imho.

  9. fat bastard Says:

just got in the “lottery” for Cincy shows. I’ve never got a single ticket out of these lotteries but I try every time.

  10. sumodie Says:

I’ve yet to sit in a seat with bad sound at MSG

Knoxville’s sound impressed me so much it reminded me of MSG without the bouncing floor

In any case, it’s all about getting inside, period 🙂

  11. Kenny Powers Says:

    @ GuitarPicker420:

“I swear, during the reggae jam I stared into the gaping maw of hell and told the devil to f-off. Since that point, I haven’t been scared of anything, I thank Phish for that.”

That just may be the single greatest thing I’ve ever heard on this board. You should write that shit down and bronze it. A+

  12. MoneyMatt Says:

i know this is way off topic, just posting here because it’s most recent. the only download of 12/29/94 I can find is first set only, which obviously leaves the Bowie, and the reason I’m grabbing this show, out. I usually visit phishows.com…..any help would be appreciated. thanks!

  13. mOoNsHaKe Says:

I was at MSG for Phish in the new years run 1994-95 and 1997-1998. Here’s the deal, though. I slept in my car for the MSG show in 94. I nearly slept on the street in 1997, when hotel rooms were impossible for s’one young, dumb, and unemployed as I was. Flash forward 2009, and its not New Years, so hotel rooms will be a bit cheaper and more available, but I still can’t see myself paying a couple hundred dollars (or easily more) for a hotel room per night (if I had that kind of cash, I’d just fly to Indio). Sumodie gave some good advice about staying for cheaper but I was hoping to hear some more. Yeah, MSG is a great venue, the best, ok, but what’s bothering me is that if I do win the lottery for these shows, am I going to be able to afford to stay there for three nights. I’m too old to sleep in my car or stay at a hostel.

  14. sumodie Says:

“I’m too old to sleep in my car or stay at a hostel.”

Dude, there are people of ALL ages at the YMCA -you would be far from the oldest. It’s just a safe, clean, and NORMAL place. Often with very hot Euro chicks.

There’s plenty of online travel sites -you should be able to get a room below $200 on Manhattan.

  15. Uncle Ebeneezer Says:

    I’ve heard it’s a pretty fun place, too…

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CS9OO0S5w2k

  16. mOoNsHaKe Says:

I guess I misunderstood… I was guessing you mentioned a youth hostel…. like I used to stay when I visited Europe in my college days… there is an age limit… you can’t be as old as me and stay there… but the YMCA might be an option… what does it cost? Do you bunk with others or do you have a separate room? Do you book in advance? Thanks again for the advice Sumodie

  17. mOoNsHaKe Says:

    Ok nevermind… that’s not a bad idea… thanks

  18. sumodie Says:

It’s best just to go to the YMCA (West 63rd) website and check out prices and availability. I think I’m paying $100/night for a single. Yes, you get a room to yourself -a no frills dorm-like room with bedding/towel. Some floors have shared bathrooms, and a few floors have semi-private bathrooms (not in your room) that you use your room key to enter. Lots of Europeans, families, all types of folks stay here -I’ve even seen Marathon runners there. Subway is two blocks south at Columbus Circle. A separate parking garage is next door (at usual NYC prices, but not as expensive as mid-town).

Sure, it’s not the Westin or W, but it’s a good place, especially if other things are more important, like saving cash for phish tour!

  19. Gatsby Says:

    iPhone App Ideas – here’s my .02:

    1) Obviously the regular Phish Thought’s content is a must

    2) Jam of the Day Functionality

    3) Streaming Archive of Music would be really cool. Maybe the jams of the day could be retroactively integrated into this archive on a daily or weekly basis.

    4) You Tube Portal to view Video’s of the Weekend

    5) Search Function to find older Posts

    6) Bio / Pic of Mr. Miner

  20. ChefBradford Says:

Once again, no tour love for the deep South. I think that makes us the pariahs of the continental States this year

  23. halcyon Says:

    Thanks Bingos….I dig Only a Dream…fun song

  24. Mr. Completely Says:

Second what Kenny said – that post by guitarpicker420 was jaw dropping

    life is cool
