Weekend Nuggets: Lemonwheel

DOWNLOADS OF THE WEEKEND:

phish-lemonwheel-98-smallPhish pumped everyone up yesterday with some great announcements about Festival 8, as it sits just at arm’s reach, less than two weeks away! Let’s take a deep breath this weekend and reflect on a festival past – 1998’s Lemonwheel. Limestone’s second season-ending festival brought six sets of pure fire. At the end of Summer ’98, Phish began blending ambient jamming into their repertoire, incorporating this style heavily in 8.16’s “Ghost.” But Summer ’98 was all about the laid-back funk, and the gem of this weekend was the second set of 8.15, featuring the massive combo of “Gunbo > Sanity > Tweezer,” all following a big-tim, festi-sized “Reba.” Set II of night II is also particularly strong, boasting “Disease > Piper, Ghost, Fluffhead” at the beginning of the frame. Six sets of greatness – plus the Ambient Set – later, and Phish had thrown one of their best weekends of all time.

LEMONWHEEL. Right on, Miner with 8.15.98 II. The REBA is perfection, but the SLAVE needs much more mention than most of that set. I remember the glowstick war during SLAVE and how much the band fed from it. The AUDs tell the story. Hearing Trey pulling us all up from the ambience right to the ecstasy of the climax of the jam. Awww man, I can feel again right now. BLISS

  2. Phish...Yup Says:

Thanks for the advice on page 1 Leo and m00nshake. Decisions to be made on Monday.

Time to drink many beers and the first will be dedicated to the phishthoughts world

  3. Phish...Yup Says:

Euchre is great by the way. We played endless euchre during the ’03 cincy run that miner brought up yesterday

  4. Uncle Ebeneezer Says:

@ Beep…just moved to Seattle from Indiana, northside….the game is super easy to learn. Anyone going to 8 down for a Euchre tournament at some point?

For everyone who hasn’t noticed yet, Southwest Airlines flies into a city in California called Ontario…40 minutes east of LA and about 90 minutes west of Indio. I’m arriving in Ontario about 10.30 Thursday night, hoping to catch a ride into the fest with some folks…

Point is, flying into Ontario is MUCH cheaper than Palm Springs…check it out!!

  8. GuitarPicker420! Says:

Boiler Up! Right on Beep and Butter.

  9. BrandonKayda Says:

Okay….first of, the SPAC 04′ Piper iis INSANE. Huge Tweezer Reprise-themed jam—->Jibboo. I wonder if Phish 3.0 will ever take it to that level…maybe we’ll see Festival 8? I cannot wait to see if they take their jamming to another level. I am pretty sure since it is a halloween festival we will see some nice ambient jamming (a-la 6.14.00….that show is great by the way. huge twist–>jam–>walk away–>jam blows my skull. Thanks Robear!) Still, really looking forward to Festival 8. My finals for the first term are on the 30th, so I can have that weekend to relax and enjoy some new Phish to listen to!

Anyways, I just found out the Dark Star Orchestra has 4 dates coming up near me, the closest like 20-30 minutes away. Woo-hoo! I have the possibility of hitting 2-3 shows, super excited. The first may be in Hagerstown, MD (like 30mins from my house) in mid-November. Then they are doing a 2-night NYE stand in Baltimore, which is also a slight possibility (atleast on the 30th) Anyways, this is some real good news.

Also, my dad wants to see Steely Dan in November (they are coming to DC for 2 nights). I checked them out, really cool jazzy stuff. There is a lot of room for band solos and improv and the like. That would be a fun time.

Hope everybody here is doing alright, I haven’t been on too much lately, it’s been a busy couple of weeks. Now that I have some new music to listen to (once again, thank you Robear!) and some *possible* concerts to look forward to, things are definitely looking up.

Hope all of you guys going to Festival 8 have an awesome time, I’m sure that there will be plenty of highlights to be talked about. Looking forward to the acoustic set and everything surrounding it, all of the recent updates sound fantastic. “Feight” will melt faces, I promise you that.

  10. butter Says:

How do you guys know this thing is going to be held in Indio?

  11. butter Says:

This JOTW is sweet. I’m only half way thru the Sanity, cool transition from Gumbo. Goes great with fresh Nor Cal Green House.

  22. ryan Says:

Ghost In the Machine. You heard it here!

  23. ryan Says:

Okay, so I might be influenced by the fact that my first show was Cincy at the Crown in 98 when they played So Lonley for the Encore. It was a great show.

  24. ryan Says:

    Miner,

kudos on linking the 11-14-98 Tweezer, It was my first and a pretty damn good one that never gets talked about in the world of Phish lore.

  25. ryan Says:

And is there a way to get rid of this faggy pink avitar? or do you just not like people in Florida?
