Love is Freedom > Simple Twist Up Dave” 2.13 II

The highlight of Oakdale’s second set, and a potentially amazing Phish song!

RE-POST: SIDE PROJECT READER REVIEWS

2.11.10 - Philadelphia (B.Ferguson)

2.11.10 - Philadelphia (B.Ferguson)

In order to enhance coverage of side project shows I am unable to attend, I have decided to try out a new section of Phish Thoughts centered around side projects performances – Side Project Reader Reviews. For the rest of this Trey tour, and Mike’s upcoming tour, I invite you, the readers of Phish Thoughts, to craft your own reviews of shows you attend. These reviews will be posted on a separate page of the site, exclusively reserved for your reviews. However, I am not interested in posting silly narratives about one person’s evening or experiences, rather, I’m looking for astute musical observations and analysis. Try to make these reviews between 500-1000 words, though I reserve the rights to edit down your pieces if necessary. (I will always edit for grammar and flow.) Also, please don’t be offended if your review is not posted. I do not necessarily intend to post every single submission. I will only post well-written reviews that focus primarily on the music. (Try to keep the first person out of things as much as possible, as that will help you stay on topic.) Anyhow, have at it! The only show I’ll be at is Kansas City, so I’ll be welcoming contributions for all other shows, including Mike’s tour. So far, we have had reader coverage of the last two nights. Check out Neemor’s take on a smoking show at Oakdale!

  1. Robear Says:

nice kayatosh, we’re doing a listen, but I’m on west coast time, lol.

flarrdog, yeah, you read it right. NYC girl. No holds barred.

Marshall, go with Lacie over Maxtor, IMO.

Should work on PC and MAC. Partition the external HD into two sections. Use on for each computer.

  2. Chuck D Says:

4/16/92 Anaconda Theatre, UCSB, Santa Barbara, CA is the heat. Best show of ’92 that I’ve heard thus far. Helping Bendly Frook.

I’m a big fan of my Lacie 1 gig external, workin’ like a champ for the last 4-6 months for me while running time machine.

  3. Stupendous Says:

Sorry if its been posted, just got in
Love is freedom riff has a tweezeresque quality to it doesnt it?

  4. Marshall Says:

Will have to learn how to partition, but I think I can figure it out.

  5. marcoesq Says:

I like the Tweezer-esque riffs in this Love is Freedom

  6. jdub Says:

Neemor – it must of been the sun dog. Great to here you have that fuzzy feeling and it’s not a about a band. I think your fate was sealed during Love is Freedom

re: glove box, said item was there during show, I was hoping you would remember since your off the grid.

  7. Corey Says:

    @flarrdogg

    Yes, they do.
I’ve bought it in Hilo, Hawai’i…and in Ketchikan, Alaska.
…at my local Shaw’s in Somerville too.

Geez, if I took a dime from everyone who is shocked at that notion, I could have paid for all my summer tours. Seriously.

    Every day I hear,

    “Wow! They still make that!?!?”
    “Wow, where’d you get that?”

and from my music students, I get,
“Tab?!?!? WHAT is THAT? Is it juice?”

    Well, sort of….

  8. kayatosh Says:

west coast – the stuff of dreams. i’m holed up indoors surrounded by several feet of snow. well, it’s not that bad. i could walk outside and take a walk if it wasn’t so dang cold and so compelling here on the blackboard. this push on is punchy and tickling my fancy. go trey. go horns.

  9. Robear Says:

stupendous, it’s unanimous then. The riff is tweezeresque!

Chuck D, that show’s so tight, it almost doesn’t sound right. I have always wondered if the recording was somehow cleaned up or remastered or something. Flawless, and Mike destroys the venue.

  10. kayatosh Says:

marcoesq: so you hear it too. sweet.

  11. Chuck D Says:

Robear, I hope someone gave Mike a trophy on his way out.

  12. Stupendous Says:

Yeah I dig it… the overall song is ok but the jam is pretty niceley set up…
    carry on

  13. Corey Says:

    @Halden

    >>Marty McFly lives TAB.<<

    Uhh, Marty McFly LOves TAB.
    I…I LIve TAB.

Ask my friends, and they will tell you the can is attached to my hand, when not attached to a woodwind instrument.
    Just sayin'.

  14. marcoesq Says:

ha, good shit. same verbiage and all!

  15. lastwaltzer Says:

tottally off subject but has been anyone been able to watch the olympics on the nbc site?

I don’t have cable so they won’t let me watch 🙁 anyone have account info they’d be willing to share?

  16. Marshall Says:

This morning was the first time I’ve ever had NO2 at a dentists office. I wonder if they’ll let me have it when I get a cleaning?

  17. Halden Says:

    Doh

    Damn typos

  18. kayatosh Says:

2/13/2010 — intense push on til. wowsers. hear it at all costs.

  19. neemor Says:

“The -7 is great, but it is not one of the best 3 moments:”
    ^ Can’t fathom this.
That -7 is one of my favorite jams ever as of right now…

  20. Robear Says:

Great start to Oakdale. Church is in session.

Now I have a second favorite band.

I’m waiting for someone to swoop in with:

“It’s not a Tweezer riff in ‘Love’. It’s some common phrasing that Trey goes to at times in jams.”

  21. neemor Says:

    2.13.10 was dope all around.
    Glad we made it.

    Marshall,
Apparently, you just have to ask and they’ll give you a tank in Philly.

BTW: Did anyone mention that we saw the midget girl hawking balloons at the Oakdale???

  22. Robear Says:

Marshall, tell the dentist you have a strong tolerance to pain killers and you need them to turn up the ratio on the NO2.

Makes for a nice buzz, listening to the house music, reclined in the dental chair. I’m serious.

  23. gratefulcub Says:

That’s why it is my favorite PH show. The -7 is absolutely a great piece, yet it ranks behind those others, for me. The Jiboo is one of my favorite 20 minutes of phishtory. Hell, the entire back half of the first set is top notch. I’ve taken ‘the long way home’ several times to get through that set.

  24. flarrdogg Says:

Corey- Good Stuff “Is it juice?”

Neemor- Great review, buddy. You’ve got a way with words.

I’m still on the fence about Love Is Freedom- need to see it live.

2-20-03- Mind melter for sure. I love that show.

I’m feeling saucy and have elected to dress up like Millard Fillmore today- even though he was born in January. Kinda fun to say “Millard Fillmore”.

    PEACE

  25. kayatosh Says:

2/13 — words to wanda. nice one. it takes balls to attempt these complex vocal arrangements and softer music at a rock show. they pull it off. love this gentle groove.
