Jam of the Day:

Mike’s > Horse > Silent” 10.29.96 II

This nugget of darkness finds Phish in Tallahassee, amidst their last set before Halloween ’96. Playing with Karl Perazzo, warming up for Remain In Light, the band sat into a thick “Houses In Motion” groove during “Mike’s” second jam.

stup – Robear introduced us in Miami. He hooked me up at F8 with a a tent and a place to hang and we’d never exchanged more than a “hey” on the blackboard. He truly is the kind soul that makes me love being a part of all this.

  2. Marshall Says:

my problem with the ’09 SBDs is the music sounds “too close,” like a studio recording does sometimes. A live recording should have some space between me and the music.

Hard to describe. I guess its why I generally prefer AUDs over SBDs. But I do love the 20 LP releases.

  3. Stupendous a.k.a The Beasel Says:

    marshall ur right,
those LP releases were mastered in post production as any release on a major label would have, the LP Dloads of today are a totally diferent story, but we get em as soon as the show is over, so u do sacrifice a lot, IMO they all sound pretty bad in 09. listen to any of the 03-04. Eventhough they might not have the loudest output from compression and the likes, the sound fidelity on them and mixing was top notch. I miss official live releases.

  4. Stupendous a.k.a The Beasel Says:

Yeah i remember hanging out with you guys during set break, @ Marshal

  5. Marshall Says:

It was very brief. That was the night that my wife bailed after about 6 songs (12/30/09). It wasn’t her bag that night, which I was ok with – made it all the more fun for me once she went back to the hotel – last thing you want is someone with you who isn’t into it. She fully enjoyed the next night though.

  6. Stupendous Says:

Had she ever been to a show before?
Glad it worked out in the end.
    12/31 was very special.

  7. Leo Weaver Says:

Mason jars won’t fail you @dad…tough to find ’em big enough sometimes though 8)

  8. Marshall Says:

@ Stup – her show stats from ’09 are: Hampton 1 and 2, Asheville, DC, and Alpine Valley. We hit night one of Miami, took off night two, and then hit the last two nights. She was never really UP for the four night run – that’s my sort of thing. She had a ball on NYE though

    Hey BB

    What’s up?

  10. Marshall Says:

Soul Shakedown, Runaway Jim, Jesus Just Left Chicago, Dixie Cannonball, and Stealing Time weren’t doing it for her. I was ok with her leaving. It meant I could rage.

  11. Leo Weaver Says:

Evening @BK…it’s been a pretty lively day around here.

  12. Marshall Says:

@ Leo – what are you up to this weekend?

  13. Leo Weaver Says:

Funny Marshall…I’ve been listening to that set today, it’s SOOOOO good.

  14. Leo Weaver Says:

The dirt man, the dirt. Gotta get some stuff done around the garden. El Duderino is in town tonight and tomorrow…I’m meeting him around 1 for lunch and beers. You gonna be in town?

  15. Leo Weaver Says:

    1 tomorrow…obviously.

  16. Marshall Says:

Don’t get me wrong, Leo. 12/30/09 is one of the BEST shows I’ve seen … ever. But I think you need to be a bigger phan than my wife is to enjoy it. Plus, people were smoking cigarettes all around us and she gets annoyed with that. She likes the outdoor shows a lot better for that reason.

  17. Marshall Says:

Possibly. I’ll let you know. Do y’all have a spot picked out already?

  18. (Formally Known As) BrandonKayda Says:

    How are you doing Leo

I haven’t checked out any Miami for awhile

  19. Marshall Says:

12/30/09 (entire show) and 12/31/09 (first two sets) were as good as 2009 gets, IMO. I’m going to leave 12/29 for others to discuss.

  20. Leo Weaver Says:

Agreed…it wasn’t a “starter show”. E wouldn’t have dug it at all…even back when she’d go to a few shows. And solo’s not so bad…as you say, you could rage.

  21. Lycanthropist Says:

you guys are goin off today!

  22. (Formally Known As) BrandonKayda Says:

Once again, huge thanks to Verno for the discs

  23. Marshall Says:

Back On The Train from 12/30 was the MVP of everything I experienced in 2009 (even better than Fluffhead @ Hampton, all things reconsidered).

  24. Marshall Says:

^ When I listen to BOTT and they hit the spot when Kuroda turned the mosquito lights on the crowd behind the stage – that was a moment that I’ll never forget. I imagine it was sort of like what people experienced at MSG during First Tube. One of those “are you freakin’ kidding me” moments.

  25. Marshall Says:

^ Kuroda hit those lights right when the band left the launch pad and everyone knew that this wasn’t going to be your typical BOTT. Perfection.
