The Starting Five

March Madness 2010

With the brackets set, March Madness has officially arrived. And with three weeks of buzzer beaters, ridiculously deep three point shots, and back door cuts, there is much excitement that lies ahead. If the field could be extended by one more team, allowing a Phishy qualifier, here’s who I’m throwing out there as the team’s starting five.

PG: “2001”

Returning to its roots this year, “Also Sprach,” as teammates like to call him, has once again began to resemble a point guard, looking to pass before shooting. Having come up through the ranks as a table-setter, always assisting the teams’s bigger stars, “Sprach” went through a four-year revolution of offensive-minded playing, often completely dominating games with extensive dance grooves. But with a stacked offensive squad this year, “Sprach” has ran the offense to a tee, once again deferring to larger jams at the tune of 8.5 assists per game.

SG: “Ghost”

12.29.09 (W.Rogell)

Boasting the best outside jump shot of the starting five, this versatile scorer can get the ball to the hoop in just about any way possible. Be it chunky grooves or blistering solos, “Ghost” rarely falls short in clutch situations, while often the go-to-guy when the game is on the line. Enjoying a symbiotic relationship with renewed pass-first point guard, “2001,” “Ghost” thrived this year almost every time he stepped onto the hardwood.

SF: “Tweezer”

“Tweezer” is a small forward like LeBron James is a small forward – huge. Filling the stat sheet in every category, “Tweezer’s” versatility enables him to play any position at anytime with ease. The most gifted athlete on the team, this freak of nature boasts liquid moves to the goal, an ability to run the offense all by himself, and a tendency to take over close games with subconscious rhythm. “Tweezer” will surely draw double and triple teams starting in round one, making “Ghost’s” outside shooting all the more crucial, but when all and said and done, “T-Dog” will get his.

PF: “Carini”

12.31.09 (W.Rogell)

“Carini’s” hard-nosed style and menacing presence has made him the face of the team’s defense for years. A la Dennis Rodman or Ben Wallace, any points are gravy from this low-post intimidator. Averaging 10 rebounds and 4 blocks per contest, this monster inhales anything in his path, crashing the power chords, cymbals, and offensive boards with the same notable passion.

C: “YEM”

Holding down the middle since the late-’80s, “You Enjoy Myself” has become a legend in its own time. This ageless wonder continues to play out his glory years with as much delicacy and spunk as his early days. The cornerstone of the teams offensive and defensive schemes, Phish wouldn’t be where they are today without “YEM’s” two-way contributions. Known for going on scoring runs like James Brown on his worst night, and playing stopper with vocal jams when the team needs a hold, this veteran always comes through in one way or another. Boasting meticulous footwork in the post, when “YEM” finally springs free, his explosiveness and flow to the basket can be staggering.

6th Man: “Antelope”

12.29.09 (W.Rogell)

You thought Vinnie “The Microwave” Johnson brought the heat off the bench for the Bad Boys of Motown? Well, “Antelope’s” energy coming off the bench rivals anything any NBA scout has ever seen. Literally running circles around the court and generally appearing out of control, his take-no-prisoner style has disrupted many an offense when he subs into the game. Look for his chaotic contributions throughout the tournament, as his unique defensive style is sure to make more than a couple highlight reels.

Jam of the Day:

This is a particularly ripping version from Waterloo ’93, including a sublime quote of Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence.”

  3. Marshall Says:

George Lucas owes Peter Gabriel some cash for costume and character design. I think Queen Amidala is Peter’s daughter.

  4. voopa Says:

Now The Hollies are playing w/Paul’s band and guys from Maroon 5, Train, and Little Stevie. Guess I’ll watch the rest from the DVR at some point. Hopefully Trey will sit in on a big “He’s Not Heavy, He’s M Brother > Brother” closing jam or something.

  7. flarrdogg Says:

WA brothers (Tzara and Eb) and other left coasters- Are Greek really the only dates you think they’re gonna do out here? Is that possible?

  8. tela'smuff Says:

the irony of Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress being played is thick & drippy…..

  9. flarrdogg Says:

Just went to Gorge website and they only have Tom Sweaty, DMB, Kings Of Leon, and Jack Johnson on their calendar. There is a joke in there, but I’m gonna take the high road tonight. 8)

  10. Uncle Ebeneezer Says:

i’m waiting for an official word flarr, but i could see myself going greek>telly>creek because I’m in possession of a car that needs to be back in Indiana at some point this summer…maybe it can wait until august. I’d also really consider atlanta for July 4, and Radio City, of course

  11. Uncle Ebeneezer Says:

Only thing that could make it worse is warped tour. Or Green Day…

  12. Uncle Ebeneezer Says:

And if that’s the case that all we get is Greek, I’ve had a theory since F8

    Maybe they alternate years….

2009, West Coast Fest > East Coast Fall Tour
2010, East Coast Fest > West Coast Fall Tour

  13. flarrdogg Says:

It may just be the Greek for me and I reckon that will be a hard ticket. How many does it hold? Under 10,000 if memory serves. I’m gonna make that happen. I’m with you Eb- want to hear it from the band before I start asking for time off work, etc…

  14. Uncle Ebeneezer Says:

I’ve got a couple weeks to blow starting in May, but i might just be frugal this summer so I can ensure I’m wherever for NYE, I don’t know…so many possibilities.

  15. Tzara's Ghost Says:

We got the lonely Washington contingent now. Can’t believe there wouldn’t be a gorge weekend but who knows. Would really have to try for the Greek and that’s about it. Indio at Halloween just worked with my job. Oct 10 would be right out.

  17. flarrdogg Says:

2010, East Coast Fest > West Coast Fall Tour

I’m down with this. So hard to get away from their comfort zone and the home team back east. Especially indoors in fall.

  18. Foul_Domain Says:

Uncle Eb – I like that theory!

    I say back t Limestone!

  19. verno329 Says:

Raleigh and Charlotte would be definites for me and Atlanta being dependent on $$. Let’s hope we find out tomorrow for sure.

  20. Gavinsdad Says:

Bless up jimmy cliff. That was a humble guy. Nice to see that.

So many permutations to these tour dates. No idea what to do at this point.

WA peeps: Im a little burnt but wasn’t last summer just shoreline and gorge for a total of 3 dates? 3 Greeks kinda is similar I guess? Wondering what the deal with the Gorge is….last I checked there seemed to be a gaping 3 week hole in late Aug on their dates.

Also, since the dates aren’t firm, doesn’t that canadagua (sp) date look fishy and out of sync? Day break before to get there but then to hoof it all the way back down to Raleigh? Hmmmm

  21. butter Says:

wow….how tough of a ticket will Radio City Music Hall be?

@flarrdogg – seems skimpy but we only got 3 last year (2gorge + shoreline) for summer

we get the Greek and are still bitching…

Don’t you still have family here in Ohio to visit around, I don’t know, June 12?

  25. garretc Says:

    Greek is 8500 I believe…

And yes, hoping for more west coast!
