Ten Tunes For Friday

12.31.09 (W.Rogell)

Welcome back to Friday, and these ten tunes focus, specifically, on summer tours past. With a couple months separating us from Summer 2010, I figured we’d take a trip down memory lane. Please choose to either download the selections OR stream them to minimize bandwidth cost. Thanks, and have a great weekend!

Reba” 8.2.03 I

A brilliant highlight from IT’s first set. There’s nothing like an afternoon, festival-sized “Reba” jam.

Tweezer” 7.25.98 II

A Summer ’98 classic featuring larger-than-life, bulbous dance grooves.

Drowned > Chalkdust Reprise” 7.11.00 I

Flooding over from yesterday’s “Drowned” post, here we have “the Phish from Vermont” indulging in musical-comedy, best blending this jam into the old-school, anthemic, “Chalkdust Reprise.”

Split Open and Melt” 6.11.94 II

A concise, power-packed version from Red Rocks ’94. A perfect example of musical density.

Stash” 7.22.93 I

An old-school shred-fest for Big Red under a deluge at Stowe, VT during Summer ’93. On stage Trey remarked that the stage crew was talking about canceling the show due to possible electrocution. His response? “I told ’em Fuck that. Put the plug up my ass and count out Llama!”

Disease > Free” 6.26.95 II

A personal favorite, and a deep dive into Summer ’95 psychedelia.

Scent of a Mule” 8.17.97 III

Oh no, the quintessential set-killer! Think again, this is Limestone, Maine, and in final set of The Great Went, “Scent of a Mule” became an ethereal launchpad. Out of the usual “Mule Duel” segment, the band decided to play as the spirit moved, drifting into an beautiful and experimental segment of music. The band delicately passed through the “Mind Left Body” theme and a digital delay jam before awkwardly crashing back into Gordon’s speedgrass.

Demand > Antelope” 6.24.94 II

This smoking experimental “Antelope” hails from the intimate confines of The Murat Theatre, circa ’94; a magnificent, multi-faceted piece of music.

7.16.98 The Gorge, George, WA < Torrent

7.16.98 The Gorge, George, WA < Megaupload

The Gorge '09 (W.Rogell)

The first night of The Gorge ’98, a two-set beast in its own right, even though it has always lived in the shadows of 7.17’s peak performance.

I: The Squirming Coil, NICU, Stash, Reba, Fast Enough for You > When the Circus Comes, Run Like an Antelope

II: Julius, The Moma Dance,  Piper, Axilla, David Bowie, Tube, Slave to the Traffic Light

E: Sample in a Jar

    @ Leo

It’ll work out….. If it doesn’t, just get baned and pretend for a minute that it did 😉

The ol’ wrist should be back in business within a few days I hope. I’m pretty pissed about not being able to golf, but luckily the weather hasn’t been to nice. It makes it a little easier. My friends have been pretty relentless about the whole thing. Callin me Aggasi, Wilson, etc……. I guess I can’t say much. It was pretty stupid.

  3. BingosBrother Says:

If any Chi-town peeps are goin to U-Melt in a few hours, I’ll be wearin a Green Eggs and Ham shirt. Have a great weekend y’all!

  4. Skyballs Saxscraper Says:

The footbell is the official “Mike approves of this groove” or “some crazy shit is about to go down” signal. Either or.

  5. BingosBrother Says:

Oh, and a footbell is what goddesses wear around their ankles to alert you to their presence.

  6. guyforget Says:

    still don’t get it

  7. Skyballs Saxscraper Says:

Y’See, that’s why they started floating around. To get around the footbell.

Never trust a god that hovers, they’re always the tricksters.

  10. Selector J Says:

  11. guyforget Says:

Hah, that’s great. is that mike all the time, i just assumed it was Fish. Silly me i guess.

  12. Phamily Berzerker Says:

I have something to say but it can wait until tomorrow or better the next week.

    That is all.

  13. BabyPigPerm Says:

I was wondering what you guys had been referring to and just figured it was a code or bastardized morph word or neologism. now I get it.

really funny video. he is SO deliberate. reminds me of the random triangle strikes the Dead would do. We always referred to that as the “ahhh, that’s just the Dead messin’ with ya, dude!”

    Thanks, PhIsH!

  14. Phamily Berzerker Says:

Nice MLB in the Mule reminds me of Tweezerfest a little bit.

  15. Skyballs Saxscraper Says:

You mean the 5.7.94 Tweezer(et. al.), right?

  16. Mitch Says:

so for all those times i asked what a footbell was, you could have just shown me that video and made complete sense!!!!

now i get it! lightbulb goes off, footbell sounds

  17. Mitch Says:

i’ve heard that a bunch and never knew who was making it. figured it was fishman.

now i get all the *tings and dongs and bongs etc.

thank you for asking and clearing that up to those of you higher on the page

  18. Mitch Says:

guyforget and i are in the same boat on that one.

    i feel better. haha

  19. Phamily Berzerker Says:

Indeed before they drop into sparks.

Someone, somewhere should release the second set of 4-4-92.

    When Mike’s had tramps.

  20. BabyPigPerm Says:

I am listening to the Bomb show right now!

  21. Mitch Says:

went back to page 17. pardon my haziness on the listening party from msg3. hazy for obvious reasons. then we got scents that night! i didnt even think about having listened to it that day since i had been doing dishes while you guys jammed out but i thought i had channeled it. i kept saying on here for weeks that scents would be saved for msg. i’m starting to think i can really call stuff like that or that the band actually reads my comments on here. coincidence? i think not.
anyway, i have every live phish and much like you, before miners site, my listening was mostly of shows i was at or special shows that i had heard about. since this site ive expanded but the 03/04 era, i def have my go-to shows. i’ll branch out a bit with those shoreline shows if for no other reason than that my fav song from that era is scents. i’ll give you the recap when i’m done.

i’m down for a meetup. i was asking about tix at the door earlier cause i wasnt sure if it would sell out. maybe i’ll pick those up this weekend.

i’m with you. i cant get enough loops. bring em on.

  22. Mitch Says:

i didnt catch what you did while playing tennis but i’d be making fun of you since your wrist doesnt work. something about you not getting any play. things of that nature.

  23. Robear Says:

    atta boy mitch.

    you really were hazy.

    i think I did the dishes 🙂

  24. Skyballs Saxscraper Says:

I was, unknowingly, present for a footbell moment(tm). The 6.20.04 Waves, starts right off with a *ding*, ends with a seven minute minor key groove.

  25. HarryHood Says:

    lol @ Mitch

Log story, but the cliffnotes version is that I had spent all day trying to do the right thing and help this bird that had gotten itself stuck in my attic. I tried everything to get it out without hurting it, but it decided that it would be more fun to start diving at my head. I finally took the more barbaric approach and grabbed a tennis racket. On the third swing ( a beautiful backhand I might add) I connected. Not only with the bird, but with a rafter as well. Tore a tendon in my wrist and ended up in the hospital. To make matters worse, the following day, a bird had sat on my car and just shit everywhere. Did I learn my lesson? Yes. Yes indeed.
