Ten Tunes For Friday

12.31.09 (W.Rogell)

Welcome back to Friday, and these ten tunes focus, specifically, on summer tours past. With a couple months separating us from Summer 2010, I figured we’d take a trip down memory lane. Please choose to either download the selections OR stream them to minimize bandwidth cost. Thanks, and have a great weekend!

Reba” 8.2.03 I

A brilliant highlight from IT’s first set. There’s nothing like an afternoon, festival-sized “Reba” jam.

Tweezer” 7.25.98 II

A Summer ’98 classic featuring larger-than-life, bulbous dance grooves.

Drowned > Chalkdust Reprise” 7.11.00 I

Flooding over from yesterday’s “Drowned” post, here we have “the Phish from Vermont” indulging in musical-comedy, best blending this jam into the old-school, anthemic, “Chalkdust Reprise.”

Split Open and Melt” 6.11.94 II

A concise, power-packed version from Red Rocks ’94. A perfect example of musical density.

Stash” 7.22.93 I

An old-school shred-fest for Big Red under a deluge at Stowe, VT during Summer ’93. On stage Trey remarked that the stage crew was talking about canceling the show due to possible electrocution. His response? “I told ’em Fuck that. Put the plug up my ass and count out Llama!”

Disease > Free” 6.26.95 II

A personal favorite, and a deep dive into Summer ’95 psychedelia.

Scent of a Mule” 8.17.97 III

Oh no, the quintessential set-killer! Think again, this is Limestone, Maine, and in final set of The Great Went, “Scent of a Mule” became an ethereal launchpad. Out of the usual “Mule Duel” segment, the band decided to play as the spirit moved, drifting into an beautiful and experimental segment of music. The band delicately passed through the “Mind Left Body” theme and a digital delay jam before awkwardly crashing back into Gordon’s speedgrass.

Demand > Antelope” 6.24.94 II

This smoking experimental “Antelope” hails from the intimate confines of The Murat Theatre, circa ’94; a magnificent, multi-faceted piece of music.

7.16.98 The Gorge, George, WA < Torrent

7.16.98 The Gorge, George, WA < Megaupload

The Gorge '09 (W.Rogell)

The first night of The Gorge ’98, a two-set beast in its own right, even though it has always lived in the shadows of 7.17’s peak performance.

I: The Squirming Coil, NICU, Stash, Reba, Fast Enough for You > When the Circus Comes, Run Like an Antelope

II: Julius, The Moma Dance,  Piper, Axilla, David Bowie, Tube, Slave to the Traffic Light

E: Sample in a Jar

Poor kids today, with their iPhones and their Twitter and their Facebook. Every stupid thought they have, the instantly broadcast to everyone they know. Drunken Tweets from Drunken Twits.

“Remember when you got drunk last night, danced topless on the bar, and went home with that loser? No? Well, check out my facebook page, I posted the iVideo of it this morning.”

They really should put down their iStuff and pick up a f’ing book!!

  3. Little Buddy Says:

    Nice, BTB! You’ll love it

Nice Reba to kick off this Friday. A Sublime afternoon that was indeed. The IT DVD captures that moment so beautifuly, toward the end of the jam, Trey looks like he is emotionaly affected by what he is playing.

The 80’s will go down as the worst fashion decade in the history of the planet. My Jr. High attire featured stoned washed jeans with pinched rolls at the bottom for maximum effect.

  5. BTB Says:

I have a GD video from shoreline in 89′ (I think 89). I’ve watched that video probably 8 times since I got it. Really excited to see the RFK show.

  6. BTB Says:

I was next to the soundboard/light structure about 70 rows back for the IT Reba. Slamming miller lights in the sun and that Reba was more ripped that me! Sublime!

  7. jdub Says:

@GC, atleast we didn’t have everything captured on video or camera and splattered on the Internet for permanent public record of those halcyon days.

I know for me the 80s were just the start of my salad days that extended up until, well, now, I guess. keep the salad coming!

This one of the best TTFF yet. Thanks for drawing attention back to the Went Mule, which I now need to relisten to as I haven’t played that set in years.

  12. verno329 Says:

@Willowed I had tried to block out those 97-99 years of The Chipmunks career. It was a very dark period for them

  13. Mr. Palmer Says:

@cub- Phish 3d in edgewater NJ. playing at 7pm and 9 :45 pm on wed . may 5th. you want me to grab tix?

  14. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

I love the Chalkdust Reprise. Just makes you smile, doesn’t it?

    Happy Friday peops!

Awoke to discover some kind soul taped that Atoms for Peace show I was at and made it available for the rest of us chumps. What a great world we live in!

So I just want to say thanks to all the tapers out there in the world. I dunno if anybody on here is a taper, but because of these people, I feel like we’re living in a charmed era. Perfect for me, at least. You folks who never had to go to the record store and pay fifty bucks for a shitty-sounding Zeppelin bootleg: consider y’selves blessed.

Not downplaying the thrill of the hunt from those days, but I don’t miss ’em. Now we have the greatest band in the world, a huge percentage of their shows in listenable quality, free for the grabbing/carrying around with us wherever we go.

    Rock on.
