Ten Tunes For Friday

12.31.09 (W.Rogell)

Welcome back to Friday, and these ten tunes focus, specifically, on summer tours past. With a couple months separating us from Summer 2010, I figured we’d take a trip down memory lane. Please choose to either download the selections OR stream them to minimize bandwidth cost. Thanks, and have a great weekend!

Reba” 8.2.03 I

A brilliant highlight from IT’s first set. There’s nothing like an afternoon, festival-sized “Reba” jam.

Tweezer” 7.25.98 II

A Summer ’98 classic featuring larger-than-life, bulbous dance grooves.

Drowned > Chalkdust Reprise” 7.11.00 I

Flooding over from yesterday’s “Drowned” post, here we have “the Phish from Vermont” indulging in musical-comedy, best blending this jam into the old-school, anthemic, “Chalkdust Reprise.”

Split Open and Melt” 6.11.94 II

A concise, power-packed version from Red Rocks ’94. A perfect example of musical density.

Stash” 7.22.93 I

An old-school shred-fest for Big Red under a deluge at Stowe, VT during Summer ’93. On stage Trey remarked that the stage crew was talking about canceling the show due to possible electrocution. His response? “I told ’em Fuck that. Put the plug up my ass and count out Llama!”

Disease > Free” 6.26.95 II

A personal favorite, and a deep dive into Summer ’95 psychedelia.

Scent of a Mule” 8.17.97 III

Oh no, the quintessential set-killer! Think again, this is Limestone, Maine, and in final set of The Great Went, “Scent of a Mule” became an ethereal launchpad. Out of the usual “Mule Duel” segment, the band decided to play as the spirit moved, drifting into an beautiful and experimental segment of music. The band delicately passed through the “Mind Left Body” theme and a digital delay jam before awkwardly crashing back into Gordon’s speedgrass.

Demand > Antelope” 6.24.94 II

This smoking experimental “Antelope” hails from the intimate confines of The Murat Theatre, circa ’94; a magnificent, multi-faceted piece of music.

7.16.98 The Gorge, George, WA < Torrent

7.16.98 The Gorge, George, WA < Megaupload

The Gorge '09 (W.Rogell)

The first night of The Gorge ’98, a two-set beast in its own right, even though it has always lived in the shadows of 7.17’s peak performance.

I: The Squirming Coil, NICU, Stash, Reba, Fast Enough for You > When the Circus Comes, Run Like an Antelope

II: Julius, The Moma Dance,  Piper, Axilla, David Bowie, Tube, Slave to the Traffic Light

E: Sample in a Jar

The 1995.06.16 Runaway Jim->Free blew my mind walking outside today.

It was really cool because as the Jim got darker and thicker, the clouds got darker and the wind began to boom through. Then, 30mins later as Free started it started raining

  3. Skyballs Saxscraper Says:

Log story, huh? So it’s gonna be THAT kinda BB tonight, I see…

Welp, I’m out. Gotta go lurk somewhere else now.

    “atta boy mitch.
    you really were hazy.
    i think I did the dishes ”

hahah thats right, earning your keep. i remember cause you conserve water like the advertisements on the train suggest. haha.

well i was doing something productive while you guys were jamming out. maybe packing a bowl. i dunno. but it was productive none the less.

  7. Mitch Says:

that story is awesome. the lesson is what? the way i see it is you were being nice and the bird attacked you. your swinging was self defense. next time you’re gonna lie down and get attacked? no.

lesson here is open the vent to the attic and the bird can fight or flight so to speak. he can fight the heat of the attic until he dies or he can fly away.

wait… on second thought… lesson here is: get a cat.

  8. Robear Says:

The ‘Windora Bug’ sndchk. from 6/15/00 is phreaking hilarious.

  9. Robear Says:

Gorge ’98 is so damn good, I don’t even really have the words for it. Summer ’98 is the bizness- impossible to make a contrary argument.

Really looking forward to the screening of Philly 7-7-89 that takes place up here in Bellingham (of all places??) on Monday. Nice to read the early reviews. I love that show and am excited to see the moving pictures coupled with the re-mastered sound in the tiny local independent theatre with 100 of my new best friends.

Then again, who really needs phish and GD when you’ve got ptk:

Where is Completely? I want some perspective. Better than Buffalo 7-4? Gimme the goods, Yoda.

  12. halcyon Says:

I had 2 birds fly into my chimney and wood stove yesterday and today, one of them flew in twice. They are these type of swallows that migrate thousands of miles and mate where I live every summer. From what I imagined, these two were looking to build a nest and mate. Little did they know they would get stuck in the wood stove, and that there was a 13lb black and white cat waiting on the other side to eat them. I definitely was thinking of you while getting these birds out of the stove and house.

  13. Mr.Palmer Says:

13lb cat? Thats big, isn’t it?

Flarr- I believe Mr.C has taken a hiatus. I’ll take all of ’98 as a whole. Great year to be a fan of the Phish!

  14. Willowed Says:

Does anyone else love ordering Chineese food when they are drunk?
If so….what is your go to combination plate?

  15. Willowed Says:

    General Tso’s
    Chicken and Broccoli
Moo Goo Gai Pan with the pancakes
    Crab Rangoon (appetizer)
    Sesame chicken
    I love this shit!!!

  16. Willowed Says:

and yes….I have a solid buzz

  17. Willowed Says:

    hee hee……haly said swallows
    I am so imature

  18. flarrdogg Says:

Palmer- A hiatus? Like phish? Damn. Miss him already.

’98 was indeed quite a year for the Phish.

  19. Willowed Says:

Mr. P at like 4:00 a.m. at SPAC we will have to order chineese food.
We will have a good cry about not being with our kids on father’s day.
Then we can pig out on Chineese food

  20. Robear Says:

willowed, yer right about that ‘spices’

    a bit ‘ttesque’ a bit ‘wav-ey’

not a bad listen at home

    not exactly ‘comin’ out swingin’

  21. Willowed Says:

Not at a live show Robear but at home with a glass of Merlot.
    It’s a hit!!
It’s growing on me the more I listen.

  22. Willowed Says:

Like I said before. I am surprised they followed that jam with waves because it’s very similar!

  23. halcyon Says:

Yeah Mr. Palmer he is a big guy. He’s lazy, sleeps and eats all day. Does what cats do best!

  24. Willowed Says:

When I got home I did some homework.
They have only played it twice (of course I could be wrong, but I think I’m right).
One time they went Spices>waves…..the other

very weird because it’s almost the same song!

  25. Mitch Says:

working on makers myself. You listed my fav dishes in order. Take out the moogoo gaipan. Not my fav. Good stuff indeed. Cept my local place calls it cheese wonton instead. Strange.

dogs and cats have it best.
