Ten Tunes For Friday

8.2.09 (G.Lucas)

With under a month left until Summer 2010, each Friday inches us ever closer to new Phish music. Until then, each week we can focus on the relics from the past with ten more tunes. Enjoy the music, and enjoy the weekend!

Auld Lang Syne > Disease Jam > Split” 12.31.93 III

Arguably the greatest splash into the new year that Phish has ever pulled off, debuting the cathartic “Disease” jam before anyone knew the song. “Down With Disease” would be unveiled in ’94’s first show in Burlington.

Reba” 4.9.94 II

A soaring version with a ferocious peak from Binghamton ’94.

Tweezer” 6.29.94 II

A heavy, imposing rendition that emerged deep in the second set at Walnut Creek ’94.

Antelope” 12.6.97 I

During Fall ’97, Phish looked through a lens of funk grooves, transposing their vision on any and every song. Here’s a dancy first set example from Auburn Hills.

Wolfman’s > Scents and Subtle Sounds” 7.7.03 II

In the first show of Summer ’03 in, Phish led off the second set with this one-two punch, debuting “Scents and Subtle Sounds” to the Phoenix audience.

Mike’s Song” 11.7.98 I

1998 was the last consistently great year for “Mike’s Songs,” and this dark-horse version that all-but opened UIC’s three-night stand, moves from militant rhythms into a blissful second jam to balance things out.

Yamar” 12.13.97 I

Kicking off the final show of Fall ’97 in Albany, Phish jumped onto the dance floor quickly with this funktastic take on “Yamar.”

YEM > Fast Enough For You” 4.29.94 II

This “YEM”oozes ’94 energy and creativity, veering from a vocal jam and melting into “Fast Enough For You.”

David Bowie” 4.30.94 II

A classic rendition from Orlando, with “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” intro.

  1. BassPlayer Says:

Thank you soooo much for posting this Antelope from 12/6/97. I remember very clearly the green search light effect that kicked in at the 2:58 mark. really set the tone. I thought most forgot about this show but it was AMAZING! At set break they must have opened the doors because i said to my girl, it’s getting sort of chilly in here, maybe they will play tweezer? Then the 2nd set happened and i was never the same. the jam into izabella and out to Twist cannot be described by me (its that good) but others in their reviews have and can do it justice. Thank you again for this memory, time to spin that tape!

  2. garretc Says:

Well, sleeping roommate (monkey [not the roommate, the song]) prevented me from watching Fallon on the TV, but luckily NBC already posted the Phish clip, so I was able to skip right to it!

I’ll probably go back and watch the whole thing tomorrow when they post that though…

    Summer can’t come fast enough!

  3. McGGGGG Says:

Take that Keith Richards! How does your arse feel this morning?

  4. McGGGGG Says:

Miner, I loved the few months between 12/31/93 and the Flynn show tour opener believing that the DWD jam from New Years was total on the spot improv. I used to drop that DWD jam at house parties in College (cause I had a crisp CD copy of it) and turn the room on its head. Great memories.
Thank you, have a great weekend!

  5. Willowed Says:

So I watched the Loving Cup performance this a.m.
Loved the blazer and green short combo.
Page had 2 hot pockets sitting on a plate next to the baby grand. Did anyone else see that?
    I love these guys!

  6. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

Keith Richards introducing Phish to play one of his songs … respek.

And Trey and the boys didn’t look a bit nervous doing it. They are rock gods.

Anyone know what Trey said to someone in the audience as he took off his guitar? For some reason i assumed he was speaking to Sue, who might have been out in the audience, as if to say “was that good?” I’m making this up, but I like to pretend that they still wonder if people like what they play (I think they’ve figured it out by now that a few people do).

Oh, and two words for you concerning my dance moves this summer …… Karissa.

  7. Josephish Says:

haha karissa was the best grooover i ever saw. recoreded it last night woke up early before school watched it twice now im off.

  8. Josephish Says:

Fishman should of wore the dress

  9. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    mornin all

spent a day away from the blackboard yesterday so forgive me if I am not hip to the new lingo or in on any of the latest jokes. it’s tough business keeping up with all of the goings on ’round here.

watched the Fallon Cup this morning as well. just put a big smile on my face. now to dive into another wonderful TTFF. Anybody else play the little Phish trivia game on the Fallon site?

  10. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

btw, it is totally not fair to do something like debut the Disease jam and then absolutely shred Melt on New Year’s Eve. How are people supposed to react to that? it’s like that scene in Monty Python where the guy is sentenced to being chased to his death by hundreds of topless women. Sure, on a lot of levels you enjoy it, but at the end you are just exhausted and end up falling off of a cliff. Phish should be ashamed of themselves!

  11. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

T3PO – I believe the primary new lingo from yesteday is ….

I could be wrong but I believe that Neemor adopted this moniker for a short time and it may hold particular meaning otherwise.

Also, in case you missed it before yesterday, evidently “Rash” means puff down.

Oh, and “Karissa” now equals the funky white girl dance.

  12. Willowed Says:

    You are to funny TIII
You sure brought your A game to the board today.

Does anyone else think Trey’s new hair cut was done using the Flobee (sp?)?

  13. tela'smuff Says:

karissa was throwin down for sure! that was awesome. good for her. like to see the youth in the mix.

i would love to see the backstage with Phish, Richards, Dr. John, The Roots, and LL Cool J.

i wonder if K.R. spoke with Phish about their Exile performance?

  14. McGGGGG Says:

Another top notch Reba Miner. You are on a roll lately with that sassy girl.

  15. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

wow. see? that’s why I try to never miss a day here. next thing you know, you’re out of the loop and you sound like Donny, just repeating “I am the walrus” over and over until somebody responds to you.

thanks for keeping me informed. 😯

  16. Willowed Says:

Thanks for the recap NTM. I was off for most of the day as well. I think I may be off for a little while based on the happenings at work.
Nothing wrong with my employment, just super freakin’ busy!

  17. Luther Justice Says:

Before last night, if you told me a girl “rashes”, I might be a little cautious of her. I might even have suggested Gold Bond. Now, I’m down with rashing girls. I think.

  18. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

I think you’ll enjoy this video. nothing quite like when banter doesn’t go the way the news anchor intended…

  19. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

And where else is Karissa from but … Philly. She drinks at Paddy’s pub and pays dues to the N20 Mafia.

After watching last night’s performance again, I have invented this scenario. Phish performed for the audience as usual. Then after the regular show taping, they released the audience, but asked all the Phish fans to hang around for the Funyuns (Funions?). They shuttled them into the makeshift box seats around the band, and recorded the performance again, to engergize it. So, Phish was playing “at” virtually no one but the Fallon crew and a few others. Then they had to record it yet again because all the glowrings that were thrown the first (second?) time. Oh, and to make my hypothesis even more incredible, K.R. only agreed to introduce Phish after hearing the performance and seeing all the mayhem, so they recorded that lil’ bit at the end and then edited it into the show to make it look like he did it first.

  20. Chalkdustin Says:

Morning all. Happy Friday! Did anyone else find themselves humming the horn parts in Loving Cup last night? Thought the boys did a great job. What an honor it must have been to have Keith Richards introduce them. As much as I love getting down dirty to music, I found Karissa a bit distracting. But kudos to her for letting it go on national television.

  21. Kurt Says:

I live in indy, so i took the opportunity to go see rodrigo y gabriela last night, all was good cause i got dvr. i can record the cavs v celts game, AND Jimmy fallon!… the game recording ended the beginning of 4th quarter, and i set it to jimmy kimmel not jimmy fallon… f my life, oh well phish and world cup are only moments away

  22. SillyWilly Says:

I will actively search out Karissa on tour this year, just to tell her she’s a groove machine.

I love how some new tour jokes have sprang up over the last year: Supercuts, Run Like a Naked Guy, Karissa…

  23. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

Karissa will be recognized on tour this summer. New game … “Katch Karissa.” Or, if you are single and don’t mind she-w00ks in the making … “Kiss Karissa”

  24. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

Karissa and Rich will get married in T-Ride this summer. Then will be divorced by Jones Beach.

  25. Chalkdustin Says:

Also, Fish’s Ren and Stimpy shirt was the bomb-diggity.
