Ten Tunes For Friday

8.2.09 (G.Lucas)

With under a month left until Summer 2010, each Friday inches us ever closer to new Phish music. Until then, each week we can focus on the relics from the past with ten more tunes. Enjoy the music, and enjoy the weekend!

Auld Lang Syne > Disease Jam > Split” 12.31.93 III

Arguably the greatest splash into the new year that Phish has ever pulled off, debuting the cathartic “Disease” jam before anyone knew the song. “Down With Disease” would be unveiled in ’94’s first show in Burlington.

Reba” 4.9.94 II

A soaring version with a ferocious peak from Binghamton ’94.

Tweezer” 6.29.94 II

A heavy, imposing rendition that emerged deep in the second set at Walnut Creek ’94.

Antelope” 12.6.97 I

During Fall ’97, Phish looked through a lens of funk grooves, transposing their vision on any and every song. Here’s a dancy first set example from Auburn Hills.

Wolfman’s > Scents and Subtle Sounds” 7.7.03 II

In the first show of Summer ’03 in, Phish led off the second set with this one-two punch, debuting “Scents and Subtle Sounds” to the Phoenix audience.

Mike’s Song” 11.7.98 I

1998 was the last consistently great year for “Mike’s Songs,” and this dark-horse version that all-but opened UIC’s three-night stand, moves from militant rhythms into a blissful second jam to balance things out.

Yamar” 12.13.97 I

Kicking off the final show of Fall ’97 in Albany, Phish jumped onto the dance floor quickly with this funktastic take on “Yamar.”

YEM > Fast Enough For You” 4.29.94 II

This “YEM”oozes ’94 energy and creativity, veering from a vocal jam and melting into “Fast Enough For You.”

David Bowie” 4.30.94 II

A classic rendition from Orlando, with “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” intro.

Yeah, I always check out the Boont-isms on the bottle caps! And the course is pretty cool. I haven’t been to many, so I can’t really compare, but it was the first time I moved from improvised disk golf in the park to an actual course, so it holds a special place in the heart!

  2. Corey Says:

The Cs win. Et le Bruins?
Karissa was over the top and thoroughly enjoying herself.

My only reoccuring dream, for the last 29 years, since my dad let me watch the Shining, on the same day I shot a huge banana spider repeatedly with a bb gun:

I am big wheeling through the hotel, and I turn the corner, and instead of two twin bloody girls, there is a giant f’ing spider. Has to be two tons worth of legs and eyes. He starts walking towards me, and I can’t move. Then I wake up, not to sleep again on that night.

Happens about once every two years. And I am terrified of spiders since I was about, oh….seven.

  5. gratefulcub Says:

^ I was seven on that day, which is why spiders have sort of gotten to me since I was seven.

  6. Mr.Palmer Says:

    Cavs fire Mike Brown.

  7. Selector J Says:

Loving the beer rec’s today. I got the run down on CO beers from a guy who worked at a liquor store near my hotel for Red Rocks. Halcy and KWL seem to be on the same page as him. I was looking for a good stout and the dude pointed me towards Great Divide’s Yeti, an Imperial Stout. This one was a special version with Espresso. Right up my alley.

Funny thing was when I walked in the store I saw this guy putting beer in one of the coolers and I started asking him about beers.
“Man, I don’t work here. I was just putting that back,” he said.
“Oh, Are you from around here? Know anything about local beers?”
“Oh… Are you in town for…”
“Yea. Phish,” he says finishing my thought in a ‘Stop-fucking-talking-to-me-already’ tone.

  11. posternutbag Says:

So the Jimmy Fallon show really blows, except for the musical act of course! Also, really loved the phans jamming behind the stage. Pretty entertaining Loving Cup, especially since I was fighting to stay awake to see it

  12. verno329 Says:

@kaveh Yeah man, sorry. Finishing them up this weekend. Was trying to figure out your surprise pick and since I can’t make up my mind I’m just gonna run them both. Should ship Monday but I’ll let you know.

I blame lycan…he got me started on Lost and now I’m addicted. Time that should be spent burning is now spent watching Lost on Hulu 🙂

  13. Kaveh Says:

@Verno – no worries; no rush; like I said, just wondering and it will be greatly appreciated when they show up! I’ll give you a holler when I get them. Thanks again, and thanks Coach K and Duke.

  14. ma Says:

anyone know what channel the stones documentary is on tonight?

  15. Selector J Says:

Stones doc is airing during Fallon, so NBC.

  16. ChefBradford Says:

holy shit Trey looked like Warren Zevon last night

  17. verno329 Says:

@Kaveh Oh you had to go and ruin it and bring up Duke, didn’tya? Just for that those surprise shows are gonna be Yanni @ Red Rocks and the monster John Tesh blow out at the Gorge

  18. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

don’t sleep on that Yanni show. not quite as good as the one at the Acropolis (he totally slays on the pan flute in that show) but stellar nonetheless. Tesh at the Gorge is overrated imho but ymmv…

  19. Spasm Waiter Says:

    @Beer Buffs
Does anyone know what heavenly creation I drank about six months ago at a pub called Moe’s Tavern in Lee, MA?

It was a creamy stout from Quebec on an N2O tap. Really creamy. Soooo good. Need to find it again. The bartender was soo hot that I felt like an idiot asking her a second time what exactly I was drinking…

  20. Guyute711 Says:

The Yamar from todays tunes has to be the best I’ve heard. Even better is I was there.

  21. Gibbs Says:

Hey everyone, not sure if this was discussed earlier but the Keith Richards interview from Fallon last night is actually fairly entertaining and, in my opinion, is worth checking out (I sat through Fallon’s whole show hoping Phish might make an appearance before they played at the end). At one point during the interview, Jimmy says something like “blah blah blah do you ever just zone out for a second?” Keith gives him this “do you know who you are talking to look” look, starts laughing, and says, “What do you mean for a second?!?” He also told this pretty funny story about how he has apparently grown a lemon tree…

  22. BTB Says:

Rumor out of Cleveland is Delonte West was banging Lebrons mom. Not a rumor guy, but seriously, multiple texts and emails to this effect.

  23. Jtran Says:

Lovin (Cup) the Island Tour Twist

  24. GOOCHY Says:

    Space alien Twist, fo sho.

  25. [Not Tom] Marshall Says:

I would like to catch a S&SS this summer. That’s my wish list for ’10. If I get it, I’ll be happy. Everything else is pure, unadulterated bliss anyway.
