Monday Morning Music

12.29.09 (Wendy Rogell)

Some beautiful music to start the week…

Reba” 5.16.95 – Lowell, MA

This haunting and exploratory version is one of “Reba’s” most impressive outings.

Slave” 11.29.95 II – Nashville, TN (w/ Bela Fleck)

A gorgeous collaboration with Bela Fleck on banjo.

Harry Hood” 11.16.96 II – Omaha, NE

A version made famous by “the note” that Trey holds for almost four minutes, this “Harry Hood” showcases a band locked, loaded and inspired during November of ’96.

Sneakin’ Sally” 8.8.98 I – Merriweather Post

Some swanky funk from the first set of Merriweather ’98.

YEM” 11.14.98 II – Cincinatti, OH

In this relative dark-horse from Fall ’98, Trey loops a rhythm pattern and narrates an expressive solo atop his own – and Phish’s – dynamic groove.

@selector: that’s what i’m talkin about…shit like that happens alot…gotta be on the lookout.

nite people…first day back at work is now….over.

  2. Selector J Says:

^I was actually scoring that Polaris ticket for a friend. We needed 4 tickets for that show and got’em all. The last one was the one I got through the fence.

Making a sign is another good trick. Cuts down on shouting and finger-waving plus makes you easier to remember.

In general, I’ve found when you look like you’re having a good time and joking with people in a friendly way, people are pretty keen to hook you up.

Also being a chick is pretty foolproof.

  3. gavinsdad Says:

another thing and then i’m really out…in any ticket hunt scenario you MUST abandon your friends. you can regroup later but nothing gets accomplished in a pack. nothing. (happy to hear otherwise but not my experience). your friends can search for you elsewhere or vice-versa but to be quick and efficient you gotta hit people up while you’re solo.

  4. KWL Says:

wonder how many lurkers will be out there saying ‘i will pay for your extra’ this fall

  5. Mr. Completely Says:

how many of us would watch a reality TV show that was just a hidden camera following @gdad around the lot scoring tickets? I would.

When the sages speak, the wise listen and learn…

  6. yematt Says:

not sure why i haven’t thought about this more, but the CO shows are on a sunday, monday and tuesday (we know this). they are sold out, yes. but i don’t think a whole lot of people are going to be able to make it out due to other weekday responsibilities, especially those without tickets… just a (phish) thought. i need to stop worrying so much…

  7. Selector J Says:

I agree w/ splitting up from your friends. Gotta cover as much ground as possible.

    llfa at KWL

    the gdadi mind trick.

  8. Mr. Completely Says:

    word to selector too.

I haven’t ever had to score many tickets on lot. Just a handful of times ever. But I have given away or sold for face a very large number. And I *never* give them to the person who is tweaking out, all stressed, etc. That’s not a policy, it’s just how it works out. I always end up going with the person who is happy, or just has that right vibe about them, or something like that.

So yeah. Speaking as someone more often on the other side of the equation, Selector is right. attitude means a lot.

  9. Selector J Says:

“but the CO shows are on a sunday, monday and tuesday”

    in October, at that.

  10. Mr. Completely Says:

plus why would anyone worry about splitting off from friends these days? um, cell phone? back in the “uphill in the snow both ways” days it was maybe an issue, but now, come on…get out there and hustle, beyotches!

  11. KWL Says:

^unless one of your friends is neemor

  12. tela'smuff Says:

KWl – what’s up? i’ve been MIA. what did you end up getting for Fall tour?

  13. Calpain Says:

First time on in a few days, choice cuts from Miner this Monday!

@gdad-wise words from a wise man. Speak da Truf!

@Selector J- I feel its not so much about covering ground but a comfort issue with the seller. No one wants to feel pressured when they are trying to sell something. Typically the seller wants to keep their upper hand and dealing with a group only lowers that chance.

AC tickets will sprout up all over the place, and at random. It will be a different pre-show dynamic in every sense (except maybe the Vegas shows but can’t speak from experience) so keep eyes and ears open.

    my $.02

  14. KWL Says:

sometimes, neemor shows up with zero tickets and ends up with two, without really realizing how that happened

so it is always good to stick with neemor

  15. yematt Says:

yeah I learned the splitting up trick at Deer Creek this past summer. more of an instinct really, i knew what i had to be done. and lo and behold, i got inside and my 3 friends didn’t (first night). c’est la vie, man. i didn’t spend 11 hours in a car to listen from the outside.

  16. KWL Says:

hey telas, not much you? getting ready to move back east, after brimfield and just in time for AC. it’s been a good year in the mountains.

  17. Calpain Says:

@ Mr. C- for that gdad reality show all you need is a button cam, imagine all the choice footage that would capture pre-show!

  18. Mr. Completely Says:

for neemor you have to just rely on synchronicity, telepathy and improvisation.

    hey @kenny powers

any chance you might just keep me in the loop on any of those Fall ’95s you feel are absolutely top shelf recordings?

I’m way in the mood for more Fall ’95 Phish but absolutely do NOT have time to fuck around with a ton of sources right now

so if anyone, KP or otherwise, wants to make recs I’d be very grateful

not just like B+/A- auds that are pretty good, I mean the sick ones, with nice round thumping Mike sound, strong overall presence and total clarity. What can I say, I’m a spoiled bitch when it comes to AUDs.

anyway help feed my picky Fall ’95 jones, kthxbai

  19. Selector J Says:

yea, mr. c. No one wants to talk to the dude in meltdown, nonetheless, initiate a transaction.

A healthy dose of pronoia is good for the hunt and the attitude, too.

  20. tela'smuff Says:

really? nice man. i’m sure you guys are excited. congrats. So you got all 3 Brim and AC? Not bad! You earned it. I’ll at least get to chill on a beach for a couple days and meet some new BB’ers in SC. Otherwise, that’s it for me in 2010. i presume you are back on the East Coast full-time until you convince your future wife that CO is where it’s at?

  21. KWL Says:

i’m intrigued by this seat geek site posted earlier

it aggregates all the scalping sites in one place, and has graphs of average prices over time, both nice for reference

will be interesting to see how accurately it predicts prices this fall, since the dynamic on phish lots strikes me as quite different than most other concert acts

  22. Mr. Completely Says:

for a little while @Calpain I wished I had video from the lots back in my tour days

then I remembered what we were actually like and how we spent our time and got over that delusional idea

there are some old Dead lots vids and anytime I watch one I am filled with a weird combination of feelings – nostalgia, humor, occasional recognition of familiar old characters, and above all terror that I might see myself captured in the middle of a transaction best not recorded for posterity

  23. Mr. Completely Says:

I’d be afraid to shoot even stealthy phish lot video for fear of federal subpoena and being some poor slob’s downfall when he gets caught in a palm exchange

  24. KWL Says:

i second mr c’s request on choice fall 95 odds. have the entire tour, would be great to upgrade, but won’t be testing them all out myself

telas, yes back east, and after that, it will be a case of where the job market takes me (and yes of course, how good i am at convincing the SLF that west is the place to be)

  25. Mr. Completely Says:

absolutely loving fall ’95 right now

    can’t listen to “listenable” Auds

    so yeah

    would be a real hookup
