Questions For 2011

12.31.2010 (George Estreich)

* Will Phish ever focus on open jamming again? — After Fall and New Year’s Run, the band is as tight as ever and communicating with ease…now let’s really take it places! With proficiency an issue of the past, and a full season of smoking improv under their belt, why was the amount of exploration limited last week — and from lessened from summer to fall? Whenever the band chooses to take musical risks, they have a near-100% success rate these days, but after the New Year’s Run, I wondered why they only shot for such excursions about once per show? (27th: “Seven Below” 28th:”Harry Hood,” 30th:”Tweezer > Light” 12/31:”Ghost,” 1/1:”Simple”) With four of those five selections finding pure gold, the question that begs asking is, “Why isn’t Phish digging more?

* Will Phish play a July 4th festival at Watkins Glen, New York? — The rumor mill has been spinning on this one for quite some time now…

* When will we see a new jam vehicle debut? — “Light” has been an all-world performer since its rookie season of ’09, creating sound sculptures of all shapes and sizes. But it needs a new, modern running mate to continue pushing Phish into the improvisational beyond.

*With the material from Joy fully integrated into the catalog, will we see a new batch of songs this year? — A constant influx of new material has always kept Phish’s rotation fresh throughout their career, and they’ve never been shy about pushing it. With little music of impact debuted in 2010, it seems about time for another installment of tunes. Hopefully there are more Trey and Tom songs where “Pigtail” came from…

12.31.2010 (George Estreich)

* Will Phish adopt a launch pad from “Exile” and/or “Waiting For Columbus?” — Over the past two years, Phish has covered two iconic double-albums from rock and roll history, yet, for whatever reason, the band hasn’t fully fused any Phishified covers from these records into their catalog. “Shine A Light” is a great encore and”Fat Man” is a great song, but looking at their previous three Halloween albums, they adopted “Drowned,” “Crosseyed and Painless” and Rock and Roll” — staples of their live show and primary trampolines into other worlds. What ever happened to “Torn and Frayed?” No “Spanish Moon” over the Holiday Run? C’mon now…let’s not rest on the past…

*When, if ever, will Phish do a west coast swing? — Sure, quality over quantity… Indio…Greek…blah…blah…blah. West coast swings of lore are some of the greatest memories of Phish tours past. Despite their age and east coast roots, even if only once this era, Phish should hit up a week-plus long run up or down the left coast, from San Diego to Seattle and all the beautiful places in between.

12.27.2010 (A.Hill)

* Will Trey and/or Mike do a winter tour like last year? — Phish’s schedule has been close to clockwork since their return, so does that mean we will see a Trey Tour before Phish plays again? Strong srumors of Phish headlining the Hangout Festival on the Gulf Coast of Alabama between May 20-22, would place any solo circuits in the winter or early spring of 2011.

the dead never retired for 5 years and then came back

You dont think Phil and Trey talked about this at some point over a cup of coffee. GD lost alot of “friends” along the way, people kicked the bucket in that scene left and right.

Even trey says at one point, i cant believe someone didnt die…ferrring to their crew.

i’m glad they took 5 off…or however long it took for people to get their heads straight

i’m glad they broke up the org since that’s what it takes

feeding the ‘oroborous’ was a huge burden for the guys in the Dead

I doubt anything would have allowed Jerry to stay clean and live a long time, he seemed like his path was set, but I’m glad Phish took the other path

  4. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

holy fucking shit i hope that watkins date is accurate… is it???

  5. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

are you just starting a rumour lot rat??

  6. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

@C, i’m just saying in terms of comparisons, it’s hard to do

  7. vegas wolfmans Says:

Do I want more open improv? Yes.

Do I anticipate the pendulum swinging back that direction? Not any time soon.

Clearly “the rust” has been shaken off, which I attributed to their intial reluctance to jump off the edge of the cliff. It does sound (to me) that they’re entirely capable and have conciously elected not to push it out there- with some exceptions.

Why? Fuck if I know. I’ve got some theories.

However, Sumo’s “same as it ever was” comment is apt for me as well. I’ve ALWAYS wanted the band to take more risks and push the envelope further- that’s what keeps me going back. Always has. You just never know when it’s coming. FWIW, I really dig 1/1, set 2 of 12/31, and the 7 below>WTU>20 yrs and Hood from Worcester. Just wish they’d fearlessly/ patiently explore outside of song structures more frequently. Same as it ever was.

  8. Mr. Completely Says:

don’t forget the 2 week wiltern-warfield-schnitzer-paramount theater run

  9. lot rat Says:

yup. i dreamed them both up last night. confirmed in my deranged head.

there has been some talk about the glen dates being over the 4th weekend, sears point is something I have created in my mind by driving by it 2 times a week.

  10. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

    boo

  11. KfL Says:

wasn’t comparing the bands, i was comparing the kids who listen to the tapes

there is an era of the dead that i perceive as the best, and that’s all i listen to, despite knowing that there is great stuff in lesser eras, i don’t dig through the average to find it

was just wondering if kids 20 years from now will do the same with phish

  12. Mr. Completely Says:

word @DF as I said last page I fundamentally agree with you

there are no real direct parallels anymore. Phish is tighter now than the Dead were in the 90s. That wasn’t true as recently as this past early summer I’d say, but still.

Spring ’91 is kind of similar; at least it’s the closest I can think of. Not super well rehearsed to start but the tour gained steam and got pretty sharp. They had a lot of infectious energy and enthusiasm. There were a lot of songs in rotation. A few shows blew up with big open jams. A few songs were reliable for superb contained jamming. Very wide range in performance quality, with a lot of good shows, a few pretty flat ones, and a few real gems. So there are some parallels there.

Unfortunately Jer fell off the wagon after that. I don’t think Trey will do that, so the arc would be completely different from here.

  13. vegas wolfmans Says:

3 nights @ paramount seattle FTW.

  14. Mr. Completely Says:

“was just wondering if kids 20 years from now will do the same with phish”

I do it now. I don’t collect ’93s now that I have a grip of great ones, enough to cover hot versions of all the big songs of the day, and Miner’s sick Picks from that year. Great shit. Not really my style most of the time.

  15. Mr. Completely Says:

I guess @DF what I was saying is that I wish the Dead had taken a long break, either when Brent died or when Bruce bailed. That was really what I meant there

  16. vegas wolfmans Says:

Mr C.- Did ya hear the rumor about Phish playing two at Edgefield in early summer? Me neither, but maybe if we wish it hard enough…

    g’night team.

  17. KfL Says:

bumped some of no whitey 3 tonight – thanks aw

    night kids

  18. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

or even in like ’87 (or 86?) after jerry’s coma, though then there would be no 88-91

  19. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

i heard 5 shows in PDX

  20. ChefBradford Says:

You guys have it all wrong! Phish is opening Spring Tour ’11 with a string of 5 soon to be sold out dates in Shreveport/Bossier City Louisiana’s Century Tel arena, followed by an incredibly small two night stand at the Varsity in Baton Rouge, one blow-out gig in Death Valley at Tiger Stadium, two tiny gigs at each of the two Tipitina’s, a parade through the Garden District into the French Quarter, then 21 magical nights at UNO Lakefront Arena

where do you guys get your info? I mean really, THIS^^^ shit is happening this spring

FWIW, the Memorial Day Weekend shows will all be performed at a secret location, located not so far from my location

I’ll hook you up, for real

all I need is your credit card numbers!

  21. ChefBradford Says:

I have to say, though, that it will NOT be a 70 Volt Parade

    just a parade

    no voltage required

  22. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

  23. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

    free concert on haight?!

  24. ChefBradford Says:

DF, although I trust you implicitly, I can’t accept your CC#

because I wouldn’t know what to do with it
    because it’s probably not yours
because I can’t manage my own credit very well, let alone someone else’s

thanks for the vote of confidence though!

I do take cash and money orders though, e-mail me for info

But seriously…I enjoy the discourse here, but I think that people often over-analyze. Sometimes a great song/jam/phrase/whatever is just that. And it’s also a very personal thing. It may not work for everyone, but it works for some (or many).

I think you lose a lot when you over-analyze, or at least I do

am I loving Phish right now? Yes

am I loving them more than I was a year ago? Yes

    okay, I’m good to go!

  25. sumodie Says:

^ that worcester poster just got more interesting due to the little phish clues hidden in it. BTW, for those who didn’t know, Worcester is known for its diners

also in the worcester print is a megaphone (Fee)

there’s also a chess piece (knight)

what’s that in the mouse hole, a shoe/high heel?

Can’t really blow the image up better to look more closely

Time to go dream on blasting 1/1 very loudly tomorrow….
