Ten Tunes For Friday: Fall ’97

7.31.09 (Graham Lucas)

Continuing our Friday focus on one era in particular, today we turn to Fall ’97. I tried to assemble a playlist without going for many of the big guns, but some slipped through the cracks. Happy Friday!

***

Stash” 11.13.97 II

The opener of the second set of tour in Las Vegas, and a piece that illustrates that Fall ’97 contained far more that funk grooves.

11.19.09 (J.Tortorice)

Antelope” 12.6.97 I

And then on the other hand, Phish could throw funk jams into just about any song at any time, as illustrated by this “Antelope” from Auburn Hills.

Twist > Slave” 11.14.97

This is the second half of Phish’s first four-song set of Fall.

Mike’s Song” 12.2.97 II

A monster version from that kicked of the second set at The Spectrum, (but still no second jam due to “Simple”.)

YEM” 11.28.97 I

12.30.19 (G.Lucas)

A classic, “Crosseyed”-laced version, that never gets old.

@sumo do yourself a favor and track down the wolfman’s that follows 2001 from 11/19/97. that is, if you can still function after the funk

  2. Aquaman Says:

I can verify Poop’s sweet and sour tasting notes on the Cheesey-Diesel combo.

It is so choice, and has kept me head strong since last Thursday.

Shit, has it been a week already @PG?

  3. snowbank Says:

@butterfly – still, the recommendation is to go full-on. My wife and I have been doing a cleanse and I actually enjoy not letting myself imbibe everyday. I am doing stuff that I haven’t done in years – like reading.

And I hear ya – once the seal is broken – it is really hard for me to stop drinking till I am drunk. And then I usually stay up too late and eat a bunch of crap.

You know the worst part – Men lose their alcohol tolerance as they get older. It has to do with some enzyme produced in the stomach that depletes with age. And with it the ability to moderate intake.

That said, I’ll be burnin and spinin phish tonight.

  4. Leo Weaver Says:

That lines up with what Tele dropped last night @Miner. Say it ain’t so…I’ll be in the southern plains the weekend of 6/17-20. Gonna really suck if the Phish is in my backyard while I’m gone.

  5. butter Says:

but the thought of never being able to ever enjoy a glass of wine or a nice IPA again is turrible

^ @butterfly – yea, that is way too much pressure. just consider it a “break” and the ole cliche “one day at time” thing super applies here

hell no, your not banning yourself from a glass of wine with dinner ever….that was probably never the problem

you just have to think of the current day, and to make it 1 day without drinking, if it works, great…wake up and try it again

if you slip, dont beat yourself up too hard, just start the process over

i have some experience with this, just trying to help

  6. Chuck sweD Says:

    chiesel

    ^^ me want some.

  7. butterflyeffect Says:

thanks a lot @snow and @butter, i mean i was on the 5-10 drinks 3-4 nights a week, 25-40 drinks 1-2 nights a week plan, so we’re already making progress

but yeah, i appreciate the words very much, more evidence that this is the finest place on teh interwebz

another challenge is to approach the other addictions, of which i have so many – baby stepz

  8. voopa Says:

Everything in moderation – including moderation.

  9. Kaveh Says:

Everything in moderation – including moderation.

    ^Nice!

  10. phoammhead Says:

    ^voopa

that’s what i should have told my mom all those years when she would say that to me!

  11. butterflyeffect Says:

word @voopa, i think for me it is so f’n hard to moderate, i mean last year in china i was drinking 1+ bottle of booze per f’n day, so when your tolerance gets so f’n high, getting moderately drunk takes a shit load of booze

so first step is work on bringin the tolerance down

but enough of this talk, carry on kind BB

  12. sumodie Says:

    2001: 9.29.99 Pyramid vs. 11.19.97

no contest, they’re both awesome. The Pyramid version is certainly more unusual, but as with most Phish jams I love, both are required listening

    On to the 11.19 Wolfman’s…

  13. Aquaman Says:

    Good on ya, @Butter!

That is some real deal advice. I have been in some form of “Alanon” or “Adult Children of Alcy’s” nonsense since I have been 11 years old. And, your words ring so true.

3 generation’s of my family have been decimated due to addiction to alcohol. Took my Dad last year. One common thread….the amount of pressure each of my family members put on themselves to go cold turkey.

Life just doesn’t work that way. (@butterfly take note)

If my family members slipped, the pressure was doubled, the failure seemed bigger, the depression deeper, the relapses just kept getting longer and longer until the turned into multi-day binges. One was inclusive of, get this, black out drunken flights to other states. No lies. To his death my dad swears he has no idea how he got down to Florida and bought a Porsche….on Thanksgiving Day none the less!

To @Butterfly and all others struggling…….take Butter’s advise. It is not a race. It will be a life long battle, that if approached from the right mindset, can be won. I for one watch my drinking simply because I never want to be that person who really has no choice. Like Dad.

(Sorry, Dad. Just passing along the knowledge. I know you would want it that way)

    -Aqua “12 Steps”-

  14. Aquaman Says:

    Now who’s got my Chiesel?

  15. snowbank Says:

The thing I have found lately is that my worst addiction is screens – computers and TV.

I am mostly just trying to break the “free time > get high > watch TV/ play vids” cycle.

and no problem, it helps me to talk about it too! good luck.

that ends the drug abuse counseling portion of the programming. up next…

  16. butter Says:

    RE: Chiesel:

    cheese x sour diesel

cheese was strong but lacked taste, so the crossing of it with sour diesel solved that. it’s extremely potent, too. good end of day herb. for medical use it helps alleviate physical pain

hopefully it will be showing up soon in peeps hoods

  17. Mr.Miner Says:

apparently dude who told me about W Creek knows workers there and already has his VIP tix for 6/18…seems legit.

    but things can change 😉

  18. Aquaman Says:

    @Snowbank

    Up next….DRUGS and MUSIC!!

  19. Cable Hogue Says:

To say that I am digging the ‘Twist>Slave’ from todays jams would be a gross understatement. Never heard it before. Need to get this show now.

The Twist features an extended segment towards the end of my absolute favorite kind of Trey playing. I think of it as the “St. Elmo’s Fire” sound…those who know Eno’s “Another Green World” may know what i’m talking about. It’s that burbling flutter sound he featured so much in 97-98. There’s a bunch of it on the Island Tour run too….Taste, etc…Trey at his most Fripp-like.

  20. Mr.Miner Says:

The musical conversations of the Greek light just pop in the remasters
Picking up new ideas and textures

    ^ exactly

  21. Aquaman Says:

Mostly Indica, @Butter, for the good pain relief and fast flowering, or a cross?

  22. sumodie Says:

shit, just loaded kp’s 11.19.97 remaster into iTunes -must listen to 2001 again (and already his remaster rocks)

Funk vortex is even bigger this time around, yikes

*Warning: funky chicken dance moves in use*

  23. Mr.Miner Says:

what does joe need? green in bahston?

  24. snowbank Says:

    Hard core Aquaman. Well said.

I think the other thing is that in addition to NOT DRINKING, you have to do things to make yourself feel good… dealing with all the negativity that comes at you all the time. I beat myself up constantly over stupid shit. I have read that really hard exercise 4x a week is a big help. Really get the endorphines going that way. OK, really done now.

  25. Aquaman Says:

Mostly Indica, @Butter, for the good pain relief and fast flowering, or a cross?

    ^

The idiocy of this questions does not escape me since you said Cheese X Sour D., I just don’t know the genealogy of those two so if the were Indica X Indica I would assume their baby’s are Indica’s.
