Ten Tunes For Friday: Fall ’97

7.31.09 (Graham Lucas)

Continuing our Friday focus on one era in particular, today we turn to Fall ’97. I tried to assemble a playlist without going for many of the big guns, but some slipped through the cracks. Happy Friday!

***

Stash” 11.13.97 II

The opener of the second set of tour in Las Vegas, and a piece that illustrates that Fall ’97 contained far more that funk grooves.

11.19.09 (J.Tortorice)

Antelope” 12.6.97 I

And then on the other hand, Phish could throw funk jams into just about any song at any time, as illustrated by this “Antelope” from Auburn Hills.

Twist > Slave” 11.14.97

This is the second half of Phish’s first four-song set of Fall.

Bathtub Gin > Llama” 11.19.97 I

A dark-horse fall highlight from Champaign, Illinois.

2001” 11.19.97 II

6.27.10 (G.Lucas)

My personal favorite version from 1997.

***

Mike’s Song” 12.2.97 II

A monster version from that kicked of the second set at The Spectrum, (but still no second jam due to “Simple”.)

[audio:http://phishthoughts.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/ph1997-12-02d2t01.mp3]

***

YEM” 11.28.97 I

12.30.19 (G.Lucas)

A classic, “Crosseyed”-laced version, that never gets old.

  10. Mr. Palmer Says:

fine kwl, i’ll give you that one, but that’s it! 🙂

fb- haters gonna hate. Don’t see the point of comparing two bands that have a totally different sound, a 6 piece vs a 4 piece, different fan base, and play in totally different parts of the country? go to PT and start a WSP sux thread…….so dumb.

  11. fat bastard Says:

sorry to come off so harsh. but now they’re playing “this part of town” thats a serious song. one of mikey housers tunes

I think most of us were foggy in ’97. I was 27-28, did Ventura, Shoreline and The Gorge that year..great shows, but I have more memories of other times (’03-’04 excluded).

  17. fat bastard Says:

i just remember having way less weed and way less money and still gettin the job done.

  18. poop goblin Says:

a lot of that record is about Joseph Hill having some kind of prophecy that the end of the world was going to occur on July 7, 1977

the Joe Gibbs production on that shit is $$$

how reggae should sound. no Chris Blackwell production on that shit.

  19. Snigglebeach Says:

Sorry to hate. Just not my cup of tea. I actually caught myself saying some of the same things I have heard non phans say about phish.

To each their own. no one ever has to defend their opinion to me.

Go see the McLovins. Can’t say enough about these kids.

  20. BrandonKayda Says:

does anything kill a set like a Scent of a Mule?

  23. voopa Says:

Caught a gnarly throat virus being all dehydrated in the desert that ’97 Gorge weekend…learned my lesson.
