TTFF: March Madness Mix

The Madness

With the NCAA Basketball Tournament moving through the prime-time rounds of sixteen and eight today and tomorrow, here is another form of March Madness that can accompany the games: March Phish! With the exception of one selection this week, all tracks are pulled from the month of March in Phish history, focusing primarily on the years of 1992 and 1993. (And most are in SBD form.) Enjoy the music and the hoops, and have a great weekend!

The Landlady > David Bowie” 4.5.92 II

The only pick of the week that pops into April, but at this point, so does the Final Four. Check out this top-shelf combo from Boulder’s Fox Theatre to kick start your day.

10.30.10 (D. Lavery)

Reba” 3.22.93 I

A first set gem from the Crest Theatre’s legendary Gamehendge show  in Sacramento, California.

Stash ” 3.30.93 I

A imposing beast from Eugene, Oregon.

6.12.10 (L.Neuhaus)

Antelope > BBFCFM > Antelope” 3.13.92 I

One of two mind-numbing “Antelopes” in a week during spring ’92, this Phishy excursion comes from the well-known Campus Club show in Providence, Rhode Island.

Tweezer” 3.30.93 II

This rather experimental piece contains elements of groove, rock, and abstract jamming.

Feel Good

Harry Hood” 3.12.93 II

The cathartic exclamation point to Phish’s performance in Vail’s Dobson Ice Arena; a smoking and creative old-school version.

Mike’s > Lawn Boy > Weekapaug” 3.1.97 II

To close out the week, here is Markthalle’s Door’s-laced “Mike’s Groove” from Europe ’97, as documented on “Slip, Stitch, and Pass.”

@Voopa, LOVE me some T.J.Kirk. Killer stuff, my first real introduction to Charlie Hunter.

  2. plord Says:

@halcy, my favorite Masada albums are Gimel, and the live disc with much of the Gimel material, I think it’s Live in Jerusalem.

@Tela’s, damn straight on Laswell. Sturgeon’s law applies, but the 10% that are keepers are unreal quality. +1 on the Jah Wobble and Pete Namlook collaborations; his work with Terre Thaemlitz is alsoi good but more ambient than dub. You have _Mysteries of Creation_ and _Lost in Translation_, his big dub compilations, right?

In my book, though, Laswell will never again hit the peak he hit with Material’s _Hallucination Engine_. Best world-jazz-funk-dub album ever made, and ever will be.

    Saw it. Again 🙂

  4. Robear Says:

    CH, you mean 11/28/98 ‘Split’?

just found a video of the first set of the 11/29 show with Seth Yacovagne but can’t get it to play yet. 🙁

Out with the wife. Getting buzzed on bloody marys and screwdrivers. Giving her the Tahoe Jedi mind trick. I think it’s working. Looking good Billy ray!!

  6. tela'smuff Says:

plord – I do have those comps. very good. i have a cool Axiom comp on vinyl.

agreed on Hallucination Engine being a top 3 Laswell album, but Praxis -Transmutation (Mutatis Mutandis) was my intro to the world of Laswell, and Buckethead. I look at that album as a “gateway album” for my palette of music.

  7. Monsterpus Says:

Thanks for posting that Jerry interview, Garret. What a humble guy, it’s like he didn’t even know who he was!

  8. garretc Says:

I can’t take original credit for finding that, but I’m glad you picked up on the re-post, because it really is a fantastic article!

So many things expressed that I’d kind of figured out myself, and so many things that I hadn’t…

  9. tela'smuff Says:

can’t believe this VCU game. their pace, and outside shooting could take them all the way.

  10. joe Says:

so glad I can’t watch it right now at work. “tahoe fund” in serious jeopardy.

  11. joe Says:

not sure why cbs online stream still sucks here.

  12. plord Says:

went to watch online, NCAA wanted me to watch an Applebee’s ad. Fuck them. Going offline to watch.

  13. garretc Says:

Damn, Kansas better get their shit together…

  14. tela'smuff Says:

this game is nuts. VCU has the ball down the court before 2 Kansas players make it, and then VCU pulls up for a 3!!! how do you handle that?

  15. garretc Says:

Jeez, does Kansas know they’re playing a basketball game? They look horrible!

  16. joe Says:

Kansas will still win this game, but not cover the points. which is why gambling is such a stupid thing.

  17. kayatosh Says:

wow! VCU’s flozell (classic name and he is, indeed, flo-zelling) is on fire. not feeling so bad now about the arizona’s shellacking of duke, as i watch kansas get shell shocked.

  18. kayatosh Says:

    what a tourney.

  19. Jtran Says:

Bracket out the window at this point. Let’s go VCU

  20. tela'smuff Says:

if anybody finds themselves spending a trippy or stoney day staring out into the world, and needs a good background track, i added a mix to my mediafire. Called ‘Empty Thoughts’, I made this about 4 years ago during a period where i was revisiting ‘delics a bit more, so i started using Garageband to make soundtracks for the night. This one in particular would be for the later hours when you might be slumped against a wall after watching the ceiling melt for the last hour. enjoy.

  21. Guyute711 Says:

Anyone familiar with the song Polk Salad Annie? Just heard it sung by Elvis. Upon first listen I freakin love this song!!

  22. garretc Says:

I envy you Jtran! It feels so strange to root for Kansas in this game, because I don’t like Kansas and I (like most people) love underdogs…

  23. sumodie Says:

    *fixed* 9.12.99 Portland OR torrent

after much geekery I am 100% seeding this show

  24. sumodie Says:

torrent links for any show I re-seed can be found by clicking on my name

copy & paste the relevant weblink in the Notes column

I appear to be descending into the deeper realms of digital phish geekery 😈

  25. Mr. Palmer Says:

sumo- funny you say that. i just got the completion “ting” from transmission for that torrent. Now i have my First Tube opener. 🙂
