Festival Express

With Super Ball IX on our minds, I figured I’d drop one highlight from each of the previous eight festivals to enjoy throughout your Tuesday.

Harry Hood” 8.16.96 III

The Great Went

The first festival “Hood;” a soaring rendition from the third set of The Clifford Ball.

Wolfman’s > Simple” 8.16.97 II

Two of so many amazing jams at The Great Went.

Ghost” 8.16.98 II

As Summer ’98 came to a close, Phish began weaving in a new style of melodic, ambient jamming—present in this “Ghost”—that would become prevalent throughout the fall. This version is a gorgeous festival highlight that often flies under the radar.

Tweezer -> Have Mercy” 7.17.99 I

This gooey “Tweezer” provided the sunset soundtrack on the first night at Osewgo.

After Midnight Reprise” 12.31.99

Sacred Phish ground from the depths of night at Big Cypress.

46 Days” 8.3.03 II

Post-hiatus abstract psychedelia at its finest.

AC/DC Bag” 8.14.04 II

One of few impressive musical moments at Coventry.

You Enjoy Myself” 10.31.09 III

A climactic version from the third set of a West Coast Halloween.

“I even hung out with, and got the digits from, Diva Zappa.”

    Brah fucking Vo my friend.

  3. BingosBrother Says:

    Lotta blossom go’ers eh?

The real reason Phish isn’t releasing dates is because they want everyone to show up at BTB Fest. It’s working.

I used to drive the cart that picks up the balls at the driving range when I was like 13-15. I got some lessons out of the deal and then could hit balls when it wasn’t busy. Mostly from the areas that the cart couldn’t get to back into the middle. I learned how to hit a bunch of different shots that way and was probably better by the end of the last summer working there than I ever will be unfortunately. Anyway, I got into a good fight one day driving the cart. Everyone always tries to hit the cart (you know you do), so I would make it a little game with the people maybe buzz them a bit and swerve away, etc. The door latch didn’t work, so I had to hold it to keep it shut when I did those evasive maneuvers. Well, this one older kid (maybe 18) thought I was flipping him off and was waiting for me where I unloaded the balls. He ended up coming after me and we got into an honest fist fight. I held my own but most likely lost the decision. Was bloody with ripped shirt and had to explain everything to my boss there. Luckily, he wasn’t mad at me and it wasn’t a country club type of place where anyone else would be offended. … umm. no point to that story…carry on.

  5. Mike in Austin Says:

Thanks Gdad. Need to go find out what happened.

What kinda crazy anger management needing golfer hits a ball jockey? Even if you were flipping him off? I like the story though.

  6. albert walker Says:

    what’s up comrades

power to the people convos along with families golf handicaps

    only in America

    jk of course

we need new Phish. that much I know. could be all I know.

  7. Mr palmer Says:

IT. 46 days. Is this considered the highlight of the weekend ? Just gave it s good listen( thanks live phish app). Wowzers. I guess ghost and waves are up there as well. This is a beast though. Way to open a 3rd set!

  8. Mr palmer Says:

Of course if I looked up, I’d see miner gave it the stamp of approval already.

  9. Tzara's Ghost Says:

@palmer, I just blasted the IT 46 days at work too. Crazy shit. I think I fried my trainee though.

  10. eljefe Says:

    Just catchin up.

Brought my Mom and 11 yr old Bro to NYE ’98. Along w 6 or more friends we traded seats around so we got the front row of Lower mezzanine on Fishman side. Then we all made glowstick fishes and spelled out the setlist in glowsticks and had a general amazing time. My mom and bro prolly saw 10 shows w/o me there between 97 and 2000.

    Wishlist: Some new covers
Longer freeform improv (I think they are playing well just stretch it out 10 to 15 mins longer)
    Late night Set @ Superball
IT box set w/ Tower and Soundcheck

  11. eljefe Says:

    Well done TRZA

Never heard the IT 46 Days before. This is what I crave for the Superball. Add CK’s lights of course

  12. Tzara's Ghost Says:

    How’s it going, jefe?

My parents want to go to the Gorge this year. Would be fun to share that with them, but maybe a little more fun if we meet up after and discuss it.

I think the Waves is supposed to be the highlight of IT? Either way there’s plenty of dankness to go around.

  13. eljefe Says:

    Tzara that is

  14. eljefe Says:

Things are great. My bro is heading to Super9 w me.
Our only other festie was Coventry. We still had a blast but…….
Hopefully we can catch up w KWL while he’s here. That ICP show at SAM is the 12th. Is he into Crazy Dutch 10 piece jazz bands? I’m def going if tix are available. Let me know if you’re up for it.

  15. Mike in Austin Says:

The 46 days had a bit of a marathon feeling at the time. Especially after that massive Ghost and glowstick extravaganza.

We were 15′ in front of the stage for the third set. During Lizards, it was so quiet you could hear a pin drop up there. Very respectful folks that close.

  16. EL Duderino Says:

I thought that Nicklaus ’86 Masters program was excellent!

I believe that was an Easter Sunday if memory serves.
Watched that one with my grandfather.
One of the nicer memories with him

  17. Tzara's Ghost Says:

@jefe, Insane Clown Posse at the Seattle Art Museum??? I’m so in…
I think I remember you mentioning an improv collective actually, which sounds interesting. Might be up for it.

  18. Mr.Miner Says:

im fresh out of ideas to write about with nothing going on in the Phish world these days…anyone have any suggested topics or thoughts that might make a good (and relatively) painless post for tomorrow? If so, drop ideas in here. cheers, folks. Been super busy with the book, sorry I haven’t been posting more

  19. joe Says:

back for a second helping today of the 46 days. Will we ever hear something as “out there” from the band again?

  20. butter Says:

@KP – Santa Rosa, CA is the closest airport, but you have to connect in PHX, LA, SEA, or PDX as that is who it serves, and it has one airline, Alaska Horizon – using it next weekend to visit friends in PDX for the weekend

otherwise Oakland or San Francisco, Oakland’s a bit closer and more convenient and a great SouthWest hub, but Oak and SF are the ones to use

  21. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

absolutely nothing wrong with dropping another selection of tasty festival tracks on us. this last set whet some appetites for sure.

  22. joe Says:

seconded. Festival Express, part II. (Bigger and Badder)

  23. albert walker Says:

doesn’t get much better than that kids. one of my all time favorites.

  24. thedayman Says:

  25. thedayman Says:

I need to give a proper spin to that 98 UIC run… heard nothing but good things, and I’d be so stoked if the uic rumor comes through this summer
