TTFF: Through The Years

12.31.10 (G.Estreich)

This week, Ten Tunes For Friday features one selection from each year between 1993 and 2003. Enjoy the juxtaposition of jamming styles, and hopefully it will take you right into the weekend!

2001 > David Bowie” 11.11.95 II

This combination kicked off the third night at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre, a run that revved up the second half of a marathon Fall Tour.

8.10.10 (G.Lucas)

Mike’s Song” 12.30.93 II

A classic piece of Phish history.

Down with Disease” 12.30.03 II

A passionate version that gets lost in the shuffle of Miami ’03 that features a spine-tingling re-entry into the song’s theme at the end of the jam.

Reba” 8.14.96 I

An eternally underrated show in Hershey ’96 finally began to get its props over a decade after the fact.

Piper” 6.10.00 I

In the band’s second night in Tokyo, this 20-plus minute “Piper” batted third in the first set after a near half-hour “Disease” sparked the show.

Ghost” 11.11.98 I

One of my favorite Fall ’98 “Ghosts” from Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Limb By Limb” 12.3.99 II

This version from Cincy ’99 is far more your average “Limb.”

6.27.10 (G.Lucas)

Split Open and Melt” 12.7.94 I

A shredding first-setter from Spreckels Theatre in San Diego near the end of Fall ’94.

Harry Hood” 11.16.97 II

The night before Denver ’97’s monumental show, Phish dropped this stellar “Hood” towards the end of the second set.

Listening to the run-ending Cavern funk jam from Island Tour, I am inspired by a new vision:

Funk 3.0. Summer 2011. Replete with Chinese acrobats. Bring it!

  2. Chuck D Says:

“you think Julian is back on the sauce?”

definitely; but the key word is “think”. during the coachella simulcast, he was sipping out of a cup between songs… and by the end of the set, he was berating the audience.

about 1:45 min into the vid, he says “love you too… yeah… lets do this, lets do this suckadicklick music, i’m fucking ready. first chord, yeah, nice…” doesn’t seem sober to me…

  3. Chuck D Says:

(this julian talk has me very thankful that dont have sobriety issues with phish… knock on wood)

  4. Selector J Says:

Not too late to plan a trip to Austin this weekend…

  5. KfL Says:

would some of you folks out there mind having an interesting conversation or two so i could be distracted from this work i’m doing a bad job at finishing? that would be great. thanks in advance.

  6. DukeOfLizards Says:

    This just in:

I do not have a leg 2 hold on my credit card yet.

    Carry on.

    attn Mac users. Question.

My wireless mouse is acting up, not being found by the computer. Anyway I cam shut down applications so I can force quit ? I have my external hooked up and would rather not force quit with that hooked Up.

If you have any clues how I can get my mouse recognized that would be great too. It’s not batteries btw.

  10. Mulitbeast Says:

@Chuck – Nice Julian breakdown. I like my rock stars to party. I remember growing up and hearing about my fav rock stars getting clean and I would be upset by that. I was thinking “You guys have to party for us. You are the rock stars!” Kind of lame to think that but I did.
Of course, I agree that big red sober is a very very good thing. But again, it bums me out that he can’t puff a lil herb or have a brew.

  11. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

lol i was gonna say batteries

What’s up Blackboard? The site seem to be operating at a virtual snail’s pace these days (guess Miner really is spending most of his time on the book). I miss the days of daily “must-read” articles that piqued my curiosity and lead to very interesting discussion. Although, I’m sure you guys are still having interesting discussions anyway.

Hope all is well with each of you.

  13. tela'smuff Says:

it’s all abou the book Marshall. Read it. Read the fu@$ing book!

are you doing the southern shows? or do i recall you saying something about travel goign on around that time?

  14. tela'smuff Says:

@kfl – so what are your plans for your return to Colorado? job still taking you back this way for the summer?

  15. garretc Says:

    @Mr. P

You can control-Q to quit a program, and control-tab will cycle through the programs you have running.

I think it’s control anyway, whatever button is next to the space bar on the left side…

  16. [Not Tom] Says:

@ tela’s – I’m doing Alpharetta x2 and CLT x 1. Skipping Raliegh and Portsmouth this year (although that might change last minute).

Are you still going to Tahoe? I never saw any emails after that first one.

  17. garretc Says:

As in immediately next to the space bar

  18. [Not Tom] Says:

^ that would be the “command” key, Garretc

  19. [Not Tom] Says:

^^ which I believe was Open apple waaaaay back in the early days of the IIc.

  20. Fly Says:

Miner gets all the time in the world, IMO. The rate and consistency of his lengthy, provocative posts was absolutely legendary, and free. As long as we get some choice Summer Ter reviews, I grant him all the time he needs.

You can breathe easy now, Miner! Breathe!

  21. Gavinsdad Says:

Lakewood Ghost has the trophy right now.

  22. [Not Tom] Says:

^ Lakewood Ghost was the first time I KNEW that I was hearing a new epic and not just a song that I hadn’t heard before from Phish’s catalog. The salad days of my phishtory.

  23. [Not Tom] Says:

Is KfL the artist formerly known as KWL, or a separate person?

  24. [Not Tom] Says:

Heading for a run but will check back for any replies in an hour or so. Peace.

  25. Mr. Palmer Says:

Thanks GC. I ended up just shutting down. Its weird how every so often ( more so than ever before) the computer just can’t find the wireless mouse. Everything is ok now.

Command Q – good to know though for the inevitable next time.
