Pre-Ball Odds and Ends

6.10.11 (G.Lucas)

Trey In Rolling Stone: In a short but candid interview published in Rolling Stone yesterday, Trey mentioned that Phish will be working on a new album this winter, 2012 will be light on touring, and that he is considering covering Metallica’s “Master of Puppets.” Read the whole piece here!

An interesting excerpt from Trey on the history of Phish festivals:

The festivals grew organically out of our early scene in Vermont. We were always a party band and we used to play outside a lot. People always seemed to show up. I remember a big pig roast at our friend Ian’s farm one summer – everyone came and slept in the field. We did a gig at our friend Amy’s farm in Maine and suddenly it was 5,000 people. Then we went to Plattsburgh and it was 50,000. You have to keep in mind, though, that there were no festivals to speak of when Phish was doing those early ones. I remember hearing about Burning Man, but even that was just getting going in the Nineties. Now there are tons, but it all felt very cutting edge in the mid-Nineties. There was no playbook. We were making it up as we went along.

    1. Runaway Jim (Oswego)
    2. DWD (Great Went)
    3. Split Open Jam (Coventry)

on one CD and that’s it. 3 half-hour jams for the ages…

  9. phloridaphan Says:

They just wanted to blow so fucking steam off before split, and that’s just what they did.

Here for a week. Just bailed on my first hotel. It was a Chinese 2 star, which is like 0 stars in the US, internet kept going out and my toilet overflowed. Now at the Marriott and got bumped to the executive floor cus the GM is from Chicago. That is what I am talking about. I love the automated curtains.

  13. SillyWilly Says:

  14. joe Says:

the amount of free stuff they’ve been releasing over the last year or so is unreal…and Cypress Mike’s!!! tasty good freakout in the middle.

  15. SillyWilly Says:

    @Matso

I was going to post exactly what you did.

  16. Mr. Palmer Says:

IT Waves is so completely different form the Bethel Waves. Tough to compare versions. I got enough love for both.

  17. Mike in Austin Says:

AJ, are you in Changfeng Park? Gorgeous hotel, and nice area.

  18. SillyWilly Says:

im really happy to have a new interview

i like it when we know why they aren’t touring instead of having to guess.

of all the reasons not to be touring a new album and “family obligations” are probably the best

  19. angryjoggerz Says:

MIA – I AM! Have you stayed here?

  20. Mike in Austin Says:

IT Waves has so much ambiance in it, that it no longer is a even a jam to me. It was a musical ambient experience akin to the Tower Jam. Smoldering. Bethel Waves is great too, as you say. They both are exemplary.

Going into Bowie was great at the show. I love MITM, but in the case of that Waves (IMO) you need the Bowie resolution. And going into Caspian, likewise. Great choice.

  21. angryjoggerz Says:

Bummer, Trey article blocked in China.

  22. Mike in Austin Says:

AJ, I have. Business a few years ago. Back then I went to Taiwan and Singapore much more than China/Shanghai, so I didn’t know much about China at the time.

I’m mostly a Starwood guy too, but I was really impressed by the place.

Gorgeous place. Near the Park. Check out the very nice Aquarium!

  23. SillyWilly Says:

    @AJ

In the article, Trey professes his passion for capitalism, Adam Smith, the Rockefeller family, and Reaganomics.

that’s probably why you can’t open it.

  24. Mike in Austin Says:

http://www.mediafire.com/?vu4slv7fstqbp for the article AJ. If you can get there…

  25. angryjoggerz Says:

Word, will do. It is very close to my partner university, so I will be back. Gonna turn in now, been up for 32 hours, flew around the world, read 2 books, watched 2 movies and listened to a 6 hour Leg 1 mix, ate some spicey as hell Sichuan food, and now am ending up in a nice bed. All in all, not a bad one.

    Enjoy saturday!
