Pre-Ball Odds and Ends

6.10.11 (G.Lucas)

Trey In Rolling Stone: In a short but candid interview published in Rolling Stone yesterday, Trey mentioned that Phish will be working on a new album this winter, 2012 will be light on touring, and that he is considering covering Metallica’s “Master of Puppets.” Read the whole piece here!

An interesting excerpt from Trey on the history of Phish festivals:

The festivals grew organically out of our early scene in Vermont. We were always a party band and we used to play outside a lot. People always seemed to show up. I remember a big pig roast at our friend Ian’s farm one summer – everyone came and slept in the field. We did a gig at our friend Amy’s farm in Maine and suddenly it was 5,000 people. Then we went to Plattsburgh and it was 50,000. You have to keep in mind, though, that there were no festivals to speak of when Phish was doing those early ones. I remember hearing about Burning Man, but even that was just getting going in the Nineties. Now there are tons, but it all felt very cutting edge in the mid-Nineties. There was no playbook. We were making it up as we went along.

@Kaya. I am just finishing up the 6.19.95 Reba on your recommendation. Damn nice stuff there for sure. Bowie is solid too aye? 🙂

  2. Lycanthropist Says:

I like the blossom steam better cause of the loops and I’m not big on the added refrain in the revamped version

  3. kayatosh Says:

punk: 6.19.95 reba was mentioned by others earlier today. it’s a robear fav. definitely set aside some time and do simple->bowie (transition is $$$ and the bowie is a trip. a non-aggressive, exploratory (searching) version.

  4. kayatosh Says:

might as well spin that sterling version of mango while you’re at it.

  5. kayatosh Says:

just getting home from a weekend visiting my girl in chicago

Been a reflective sort of Sunday

I think we are really in for it during the Ball and the rest of Leg 2

Its great to know Phish is killing it again. When phish is playing like they are its awesome to have these psychedelic adventures to take all summer long

Talk about art helping people to live.

  8. punkmug Says:

Steam is going to blow up at SBIX!

@kaya. Thanks for the update on the Reba from earlier today. I do not get to check in with the comments as much as I would like. Good thing you are around still pimping it tonight.

I keep a spreadsheet of shows I have listened to and knew I had heard the 6.19.95 show before. I see that I have the Reba highly rated, but rated Antelope, Bowie and YEM higher. I love revisiting things..lets see how this goes.

Commencing good headphones re listen of Simple>Bowie in 10…9…8…7…

  9. ThePigSong Says:

Wife snoozin’ in the other room = a few hours of highlights for this guy

started back with MSGhost. that. shit. was. stellar.

easily the highlight of my dozen shows.

  10. SillyWilly Says:

We kept saying that by the end of the summer we hoped 1.1.11 would be an average show for 2011.

Right now we’ve got probably 5 shows that are better than 1.1.11 in 2011

    That’s exciting

  11. ThePigSong Says:

    nTelos Sand now.

I know I’m weeks late to this party.

  12. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

leg 2 will crush leg 1.

  13. punkmug Says:

@Silly. I agree. Things are on the uptick for sure.

I find it somewhat depressing to know they will not be touring much for the next year. 🙁 At least they are not going away, that is what counts.

While leg 1 had some ups and downs, overall when looking back on it as a whole there is so much positive development with the band there is no reason to not expect to continually be surprised with what they come up with going forward.

DAMN! This Bowie from 6.19.95 is a monster.

  14. punkmug Says:

Poor leg 1 will not have a chance after leg 2 has its way with it.

  15. punkmug Says:

Or should I say leg 1 will not stand a chance once leg 2 has had its way with it?

  16. mitch Says:

Anyone got tips for stopping percoset? Been taking a decent amount of em for the elbows for a couple weeks and stopped cold a couple days ago. Felt like crap and being in the folks place really kills smoking options. Just keep taking half of the previous amt?

  17. angryjoggerz Says:

I personally think that cutting back on the touring is just a really bad business plan for Phish – it is basically all they have going for them and they are just probably starting to build up a new fan base. Not my decision, and I doubt I would be able to see more shows as my daughter gets older, but still think they should just do it big. They are a live band, and without playing live, you just have the past.

  18. SillyWilly Says:

    @punk

Yeah. Right now I’m really trusting the decisions the band is making

And somehow I think its gonna work out…who knows? Maybe 2012 is a light year and then they play 65 shows in 2013

  19. mitch Says:

“leg 2 will crush leg 1.”

    ^this!

  20. ThePigSong Says:

This Sand is still in the box, but creative as hell.

    RE: only a summer tour
As long as this band continues to play a few shows a year and they put out the straight nastiness (read 10:15 mark of nTelos sand) I’m a happy guy.

I don’t want to see the band or fan base get burnt out. I’d love to see these guys playing when and where they want for the next 20 years.

  21. Jtran Says:

Rumor of the evening (to dissuade ticket sales even more). From ohkeepa blog’s twitter:

“Super Ball IX to be broadcasted on Sirius 17. Official announcement coming tomorrow. #Phish”

  22. mitch Says:

    Silly,
    Light year? Or light-year?

Pig, that ghost is one if my faves and I’m around 60 something. Ate everything at the right time. I wish someone would have taken my pic. Perma-grin! Elbowing KWL “they are still going!”

  23. Robear Says:

Mitch, don’t go cold. Cut back slowly. No MPP means your screwed.

  24. Robear Says:

    MMP not MPP @ mango

  25. mitch Says:

A lot of phanners are already burnouts @pig

Jtran, YES!!! was telling Matty I wished they’d broadcast it for us grilling at home all weekend. Missing super ball just got a bit easier.
