Pre-Ball Odds and Ends

6.10.11 (G.Lucas)

Trey In Rolling Stone: In a short but candid interview published in Rolling Stone yesterday, Trey mentioned that Phish will be working on a new album this winter, 2012 will be light on touring, and that he is considering covering Metallica’s “Master of Puppets.” Read the whole piece here!

An interesting excerpt from Trey on the history of Phish festivals:

The festivals grew organically out of our early scene in Vermont. We were always a party band and we used to play outside a lot. People always seemed to show up. I remember a big pig roast at our friend Ian’s farm one summer โ€“ everyone came and slept in the field. We did a gig at our friend Amy’s farm in Maine and suddenly it was 5,000 people. Then we went to Plattsburgh and it was 50,000. You have to keep in mind, though, that there were no festivals to speak of when Phish was doing those early ones. I remember hearing about Burning Man, but even that was just getting going in the Nineties. Now there are tons, but it all felt very cutting edge in the mid-Nineties. There was no playbook. We were making it up as we went along.

    you still swim? I got turned onto this waterproof ipod thing a couple years ago and havent looked back. Being able to spin a complete set during an hour in the pool kills some time for sure

    Morning bb

    Just let the Portsmouth Timber battle the Alpharetta Timber

    While I dig the hell out of both versions, I have to hands down give it to Alpha.

    Shit’s just fierce! Might have had something to do with that rather large storm ๐Ÿ˜‰

    My buddy is the one who brought that blowup doll to MPP. They actually dressed it and stuff, but didn’t expect it to make it to the stage.

  5. plord Says:

    I still swim, never looked into a waterproof ipod though. Mainly we jump in the lake, the closest lap pool is not really close enough to just hop down to on a whim.

    ah, grass mowing . . . i’m warming up to it this summer. for a stretch i hated mowing grass. not so hot here today in western north carolina, which is really nice. right now 71 deg. high today will be low 80s.

    perfect day for my big gig throwing out the first pitch in local minor league game!

    @bearito

    Any Timber from this tour is able to compete with the rest of em. Even the Timber from Bethel 3 has sleeper potential.

    Master of Puppets is a great protest album.

    I think the boys would have a lot of fun playing it and working the arrangements from 2 guitars to 1 guitar and 1 keyboard array.

    Would like to see it live.
    I saw Master of Puppets tour. Metallica was opening for Ozzy. Had the album cover rowsa os crosses across the stage for their set up and were tighter and louder than Ozzy’s set up. I snuck out against my parents’ will without permision. Got knifed at the show in the chest. My parents were a little miffed with me.

    Karma scares me…

    For me, there was one point in Bethel 3 when set I underwent a major turning point. It was right when 46 Days was closing out its jam and molding and bending around for the last minute or so. I was standing on the lawn in getting ready for something epic. I wasnt sure what was coming, and with the soundscape they were building I was expecting something epic.

    They settled for a pretty decent segue into 20YL and I was digging it. Unfortunately, the lyrics get flubbed right from the get-go, the playing is off and it came out as a crap version. I think its one of the coolest songs off of Joy and if they had nailed it, we look at that set a lot differently. Or at least I do.

  17. Phamily Berzerker Says:

    yes knifed.

    Small wound still have he scar

  20. DryIceFactory Says:

    I just realized I said epic twice when referencing one moment. Too much epic. Sorry fellas.

  21. DryIceFactory Says:

    @MarcoEsq
    I’m just waiting for the tide to fill in a bit and the crowd to mellow out then I’m off to Hampton, New Hampshire for a nice little SSE bump. About waist to chest and everyone and their nephew is on it.

  22. highhighhand Says:

    it read to me that Trey was thinking of covering the song Masters of Puppets not the whole album.

  23. DryIceFactory Says:

    And my buddies from college live down in Jers and they were getting barrelled all weekend. I surfed on Cape Cod and it was like shin high and dribby. Not really sure why we didnt pick it up. I think Rhodey saw a bit more size than we did.

  24. Lycanthropist Says:

    kinda got waylaid on my leg 1 re-listen by some Cannonball Adderly..

    bout to crank up Bethel 3.. sure wish i had already listened to this one ๐Ÿ˜‰

  25. Phamily Berzerker Says:
