TTFF: More MSG Madness

The Garden

Last week we looked at some of the elite moments in Madison Square Garden Holiday Run history—and this week there is plenty more! With a December legacy like none other in the venue,Phish has more than enough to fill out another stellar Friday playlist. These tracks further illustrate the explosive music the band has cranked out at the end of the year in The Garden.

Wolfman’s Brother” 12.31.97 I

The first set highlight on New Year’s Eve ’97.

Ghost > Ha Ha Ha” 12.31.98 I

One piece of a monster opening set in New Year’s Eve ’98.

Tweezer -> Cities” 12.31.98 II

After a balloon-popping fiasco all but ruined the third set “Tweezer” on New Year’s Eve ’97, Phish annihilated this second set beast the following year.

Carini -> Katy -> Sally > Frankenstein” 12.30.97 E

Grade-A Phish crack through and through. The first domestic “Carini,” the birth of the “Moma Dance,” and a reprise of “Sneakin Sally”—the bustout from ’89 that opened the show. This sequence gets my vote for the best encore in the band’s career. Unquestionably.

Drowned -> Lizards” 12.31.95 II

The first appearance of “Drowned” after Halloween kicked off set two in this legendary show and gracefully slid into “Lizards.”

AC/DC Bag > McGrupp” 12.30.97 II

One of the finest jams of 1997’s stellar three-night run.

Mike’s Song” 12.31.97 II

A filthy and menacing version; typical of ’97 “Mike’s Songs.”

Weekapaug Groove” 12.31.97 II

This dynamic and extended “Weekapaug” closed the second set of New Year’s Eve on its highest note.

Run Like an Antelope” 12.29.97 I

Pure and unadulterated fire; one of the elite versions of the year.

You Enjoy Myself” 12.31.95 III

When the band finished what many consider their finest New Year’s Run with a blowout version of “YEM” at The Garden, all was right in the universe of Phish.

My wife and I did the march Friday night with Seeger and enjoyed the songs in Columbus Circle at the end. He’s 92 years old and walked 35 blocks from with two canes from 11:15 – 12:45 am. VERY cool and was a great vibe. We were happy to participate.

just replayed 12.31.98 for the first time since that night

now that’s how to throw down a 3 set show (as if the boys skipped set 1 and played two set 2s & a set 3)

guess back then I didn’t know how good we had it

    IT just was….

gdad, thats a sick story. i know theres a book of a compilation of grateful dead stories, but there should be one of phish stories. i guess we’ll haffta wait for the band to end before that comes out though. stories keep rollin, thats the best part i suppose.

speaking of being attached to shows, after many years of feeling like being a type 1 diabetic was going to keep me from being able to try acid or shrooms, im pretty sure im doing acid at msg nye.

i always worried i wouldnt be able to handle my blood sugar, plus, the added tension/anxiety of having that extra thing to worry about would trigger a bad trip or something

anyway, ive gotten to a place where im ready to do it, and i have plans to over thanksgiving weekend with my best friends.

if all goes well, then me and those same friends plus my gf will be doing acid for NYE which will be my first acid show experience… im very excited by this prospect.

Enjoy, Purple! It’s good to wait until you feel ready…

I’m sure the lysergic vets on the board will have lots of helpful advice on the topic

  14. Kaveh Says:

Firing up the killer Rock and Roll from 13.31.10, MSG..pure fire!

  15. JeffieM Says:

I love that R&R! Triskember is my favorite month for phish, after all 😉

Make it a good one, everybody!

For what it’s worth purple my friend was just diagnosed a couple months before summer tour and he did a little dosing. He was obviously a little concerned but it worked out fine for him.

  17. She Divides Says:

Morning all – hope everyone has been well! I just submitted my ticket requests for the 29th, 30th, and 31st. No matter how many times I come up with nothing in the lottery I’m always hopeful at this point! Fingers crossed for everyone’s requests!

I haven’t been on here in a while but we did see Trey in Silver Spring, MD on 10/13 and it was a fun upbeat show. I loved the brass as usual. My favorites were Sand, Liquid Time and Mr. Completely. I actually felt like the first tube was not as climatic as usual which was unfortunate. Great to see Trey having fun and making awesome music though.

It was my first time at that venue which is new up there, the Fillmore – which I guess is a chain now? It was pretty good – but I prefer the 9:30 club in DC in general. We were upstairs for part of the set in hopes that some of our shorter friends would get a better view, but the sight lines were not great. The Fillmore has you turn your pockets inside out as you walk in (although they didn’t seem to be checking cargo pockets too closely). They also operate a wristband system for verifying you are 21 – which I find irritating.

Should find out tomorrow about MSG tix…

Any Trey Tour opinions? I dloaded and listened to Jersey 10/12. Thought it was a pretty good show- Mr. Completely>Plasma is REAL good. Any other can’t- miss shows? Thanks.

Agreed on 12/31/10 RnR. They pack a whole lot of shreddery into that sonofabithch.

  20. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    just grab a towel, wilson

  21. vegas wolfmans Says:

    Good timing, Ms. Divides!

  22. angryjoggerz Says:

  23. sumodie Says:

2 hours remain to get yer ptbm requests in…

  24. Chonz Says:

lottery deadline looms…. good luck everyone!

  25. butter Says:

Our baby just absolutely loves music

Makes all the difference in the world on his fussiness level at night
Tahoe 1 E: bug, coil this morn to get him back to sleep

We’ve been playing him Jer to fall asleep at night and it’s working wonders

    Time to get playlisting

I am loving it too, tunes hadn’t been part of bedroom life, very calming
