TTFF: More MSG Madness

The Garden

Last week we looked at some of the elite moments in Madison Square Garden Holiday Run history—and this week there is plenty more! With a December legacy like none other in the venue,Phish has more than enough to fill out another stellar Friday playlist. These tracks further illustrate the explosive music the band has cranked out at the end of the year in The Garden.

Wolfman’s Brother” 12.31.97 I

The first set highlight on New Year’s Eve ’97.

Ghost > Ha Ha Ha” 12.31.98 I

One piece of a monster opening set in New Year’s Eve ’98.

Tweezer -> Cities” 12.31.98 II

After a balloon-popping fiasco all but ruined the third set “Tweezer” on New Year’s Eve ’97, Phish annihilated this second set beast the following year.

Carini -> Katy -> Sally > Frankenstein” 12.30.97 E

Grade-A Phish crack through and through. The first domestic “Carini,” the birth of the “Moma Dance,” and a reprise of “Sneakin Sally”—the bustout from ’89 that opened the show. This sequence gets my vote for the best encore in the band’s career. Unquestionably.

Drowned -> Lizards” 12.31.95 II

The first appearance of “Drowned” after Halloween kicked off set two in this legendary show and gracefully slid into “Lizards.”

AC/DC Bag > McGrupp” 12.30.97 II

One of the finest jams of 1997’s stellar three-night run.

***

Mike’s Song” 12.31.97 II

A filthy and menacing version; typical of ’97 “Mike’s Songs.”

[audio:http://phishthoughts.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/ph1997-12-31d2t02.mp3]

***

Weekapaug Groove” 12.31.97 II

This dynamic and extended “Weekapaug” closed the second set of New Year’s Eve on its highest note.

[audio:http://phishthoughts.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/ph1997-12-31d2t06.mp3]

***

Run Like an Antelope” 12.29.97 I

Pure and unadulterated fire; one of the elite versions of the year.

[audio:http://phishthoughts.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/1.09-Run-Like-an-Antelope.mp3]

You Enjoy Myself” 12.31.95 III

When the band finished what many consider their finest New Year’s Run with a blowout version of “YEM” at The Garden, all was right in the universe of Phish.

    @butter
    not sure what your leanings are with regards to bluegrass, but I’ve found you can make a pretty awesome mellow grass mix for quiet times and a hot pickin’ set for happy bouncin’ baby times. our girl loves it. of course, she went to her first bg festy at the ripe age of 3+ months so ymmv and all that

  3. butter Says:

    Good call on some mellow bluegrass

    Know we know music puts him to sleep, but we need mellow music so we can sleep also

  4. EL Duderino Says:

  6. EL Duderino Says:

  9. EL Duderino Says:

    No… 95.00$ for 4 shows?
    3 of them they’re not telling us what they are…
    I may be wrong but I think they’ll all be ’77’s.

    who goes to their seats at MSG?… my friend hit 4 front row seats for 1/1/1 last year…..

  12. dorn76 Says:

    I think its pretty cool that one guy is all fired up to do acid on NYE, and another guy is regaling us with tales of post rehab show experiences….and that there’s not really anything strange or conflicting about those two things whatsoever.

    Says alot about this band, its fans, and this place too.

  13. Kaveh Says:

    I may be wrong but I think they’ll all be ’77′s.

    ^ If that is the case; I’ll pass. 77 is good, but there is TOO much of it out there.

    Noid it.

  14. EL Duderino Says:

    case in point 5/25/77
    CM’s source is flawless

    “who goes to their seats at MSG?… my friend hit 4 front row seats for 1/1/1 last year…..”

    pretty freaking sure I’d have been in those seats if that were the case. upper levels are one thing, but floor in the front is quite another. I don’t care if you close your eyes, you still know you are right in front of the band. and that’s a wonderful thing.

  17. Phamily Berzerker Says:

    ^Unless you are naked, then it is best to be on stage with the band.

  18. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    naturally

  19. tela'smuff Says:

    Halcy – thx for that link. good way to get my day crankin. I found the performance of Pocahontas. nice. I think Sea Change is the greatest break-up album ever made, and I think it’s Beck’s best LP. Very cool to see some cuts performed with the original recording band.

  20. Phamily Berzerker Says:

    So how about some football chatter? I don’t care to indulge but it doesn’t feel the same without that mindless dribble on monday.

    i ordered out for mindless dribble.

  21. stapes Says:

    I’ll go with Blood on the Tracks as best break-up album. Sea Change is up there for sure. Probably my favorite Beck album.

    Lots of work to do today. Wish I could enjoy this great weather before the snow arrives. Not ready for that.

  22. garretc Says:

    Ticket requests are in, 4 requests each night spread over 3 cards… May the lottery gods smile down upon me from their thrones in the heavens and take pity on me, their faithful servant, who’s just trying to get along the best he can.

    Amen, or something.

  23. halcyon Says:

    Love Beck. Sea Change is amazing.

  24. dorn76 Says:

    Very nice Mike sit in with Benevento Duo (1st ten minutes or so of vid). Sound not terrible…Talk about a small stage…
