TTFF: More MSG Madness

The Garden

Last week we looked at some of the elite moments in Madison Square Garden Holiday Run history—and this week there is plenty more! With a December legacy like none other in the venue,Phish has more than enough to fill out another stellar Friday playlist. These tracks further illustrate the explosive music the band has cranked out at the end of the year in The Garden.

Wolfman’s Brother” 12.31.97 I

The first set highlight on New Year’s Eve ’97.

Ghost > Ha Ha Ha” 12.31.98 I

One piece of a monster opening set in New Year’s Eve ’98.

Tweezer -> Cities” 12.31.98 II

After a balloon-popping fiasco all but ruined the third set “Tweezer” on New Year’s Eve ’97, Phish annihilated this second set beast the following year.

Carini -> Katy -> Sally > Frankenstein” 12.30.97 E

Grade-A Phish crack through and through. The first domestic “Carini,” the birth of the “Moma Dance,” and a reprise of “Sneakin Sally”—the bustout from ’89 that opened the show. This sequence gets my vote for the best encore in the band’s career. Unquestionably.

Drowned -> Lizards” 12.31.95 II

The first appearance of “Drowned” after Halloween kicked off set two in this legendary show and gracefully slid into “Lizards.”

AC/DC Bag > McGrupp” 12.30.97 II

One of the finest jams of 1997’s stellar three-night run.

Mike’s Song” 12.31.97 II

A filthy and menacing version; typical of ’97 “Mike’s Songs.”

Weekapaug Groove” 12.31.97 II

This dynamic and extended “Weekapaug” closed the second set of New Year’s Eve on its highest note.

Run Like an Antelope” 12.29.97 I

Pure and unadulterated fire; one of the elite versions of the year.

You Enjoy Myself” 12.31.95 III

When the band finished what many consider their finest New Year’s Run with a blowout version of “YEM” at The Garden, all was right in the universe of Phish.

that’s another good one Stapes. next time we hang out we need to have a Rolling Thunder Revue session.

yeah 3-6 inches on Wednesday. sweet! bought my first snowboard coat. stoked.

  2. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

nice little gin teases by marco up in there

  3. stapes Says:

    What can I say, I’m a Bobby D fanboy. Think the man’s a genius, and a bad-ass.

Not ready for snow down low yet. And Wednesday is the day my interview got pushed back to. Hoping roads are fine. I could go for months of the current weather.

Sitting in Limbo is my theme song.

If interested, here is a time-lapse video of MSG renovations since it closed back in April. The view is towards what would will be the stage come 12.28. There will be an open glass window area behind the stage overlooking the steps of the Post Office. Don’t know if CK5’s rig will cover the view or not- we’ll wait and see. The major difference is there will no longer be a lower inner-walkway around the bowl to dance in.

(sorry for the redundancy if it applies)

  5. Robear Says:

PB, Most prime time games have sucked this year.

  6. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

yeah @type iii, i was making 2 different points in one line that happened to be contradictory. worded it wrong.

  7. Jtran Says:

Funny thing about that Marco/Mike video is that the piano at Radio Bean is not actaully on the stage, just to the side of it. I don’t think Mike is on the stage either actaully.

  8. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

i think the consensus is that if you request an odd number of tickets for a night, you’re not getting shit. am i right? has anyone ever requested just one ticket and got it?

“The major difference is there will no longer be a lower inner-walkway around the bowl to dance in”

that walkway is really the only thing that makes MSG enjoyable for me.

Was never a huge fan of this venue compared to others because of it’s massive size and lack of GA Floor. that little dance aisle really made MSG seem smaller and more comfortable. damn renovations not taking into account for dancing at phish shows. dicks.

    MSG tickets order in.
sad to think 2010 could be the last dance space filled phish event.

  10. albert walker Says:

spun some 12/31/10 over the weekend

that Sand really is the bizness. the Page and Trey conversation in that one vaults it right to the top of any version since the return. so hot.

  11. krivraq Says:

Yeah, that hallway was tits. Nothing like having a 400s ticket and still able to achieve “standing room only” stage-side near the 100s.

  12. krivraq Says:

The economics lately have forced me into the 1 ticket requests over the last 2yrs. I can say I won some, lost some. I figured it would be a better chance to get that end of row seat in the 100s rather than the 3 or 4 in-a-row request.

  13. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    ahhh, that makes sense @fool
thought that seemed like a surprising statement to make!

  14. Selector J Says:

    just doing a driveby…

    – gdad: you. are. awesome.

    – wow! stitchstash & she divides?? Tuck in your shirt in and mind your mouth, the ladies are here!

    ::tires peeling out::

  15. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

yeah @type III, what i was trying to say is that it’s possible to get really good seats through PTBM (albeit rare) and at the same time, if the seats are shit, who cares, it’s msg… i just wanna be in the building

  16. Robear Says:

    No lower walkway?

  17. Chonz Says:

I have done OK with requesting only 1 seat. Definitely above 50% success rate. I’m starting to get nervous that my 3 requests for 1 ticket for 3 nights won’t be enough….how long until I start obsessively checking my card for charges?

  18. krivraq Says:

I’ll be at MSG box office Saturday if necessary. Has anyone looked into this? I remember having to go to Irving Plaza for MSG onsales back in ’98. MSG didn’t do them onsite back then.

  19. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

that lower walkway annoyed me last year anyway, i kept getting bumped every second

  20. DaNcInG fOoL Says:

@chonz, you haven’t started doing that yet?

  21. Robear Says:

First time thru 12/31/98 since the inception. Wow. Sounds like u enjoyed. One of my all time faves for sure.

  22. angryjoggerz Says:

So, night one of MSG we need to just tear out a few rows along the bowl so we can have some space to get down. Organize, people.

  23. Mike in Austin Says:

AJ, I’ll bring a ratchet driver and a 11/16ths socket.

  24. SillyWilly Says:

afternoon/morning (not trying to be east-centric over here), kids.

    beautiful day in madison

took a long walk this morning

getting my mind right with the universe before starting this week

just listening to that Keyboard Army Jam with MMW from 10/17/95

seeing MMW in a couple weeks for the first time

  25. Phamily Berzerker Says:

What’s funny is that the crew hear could totally do that.
