TTFF: The Venues of 2012

6.10.11—Camden, NJ (Graham Lucas)

With the announcement of dates, a new excitement is in the air. Phish is, once again, within reach, even if its three plus months away. But in early anticipation of Summer 2012, today’s playlist is comprised of selections from venues that the band will play this summer. Enjoy the multi-era’d retrospective as we fade into the first weekend of March.

The centerpiece of my favorite show ever played at Deer Creek.

Gumbo” 8.13.97 II, Burgettstown, PA

***

It’s Ice”  9.20.00 II, Cincinatti, OH

An out-of-nowhere plunge into psychedelic depths at Riverbend on Phish’s final tour before hiatus.

***

Sand” 6.19.11 II, Portsmouth, VA

To know this “Sand” is to love it. Every time I listen to this version from nTelos, I like it more and more. Trey absolutely destroys this piece in the context of a whole-band exchange. In my opinion, its the best version of an impressive year of “Sands.”

Reba” 6.2.09 I, Wantagh, NY

Phish dropped this gorgeous “Reba” in the early-evening at Jones Beach on the second night of 2009’s first tour.

Kill Devil Falls > Free” 6.12.09, Manchester, TN

This jam highlighted Phish’s late-night slot at Bonnaroo—the first of two performances.

Walls > Bowie” 6.19.04 I, Saratoga Springs, NY

The otherworldly second set of this SPAC show has always overshadowed this demonic combo from the first.

I have buddies that did 5-8yrs from selling L at VA Beach ’98. That place is no fucking joke for narcs.

Saw a girl get beatdown by a cop on horse the next year for selling clean glass! Outrageous

  2. Kaveh Says:

heading the the BE tournament tomorrow at MSG

^ Nice @Palmer; championship week. It is going to be good!

  3. thedayman Says:

^^ charter one is the shizz! saw trey there in 06 with G.R.A.B, phil and friends the night before. awesome place. it’s a shame that it’s not bigger, could accommodate that other band…

  4. El Duderino Says:

    @ marco

I went to VB in ’99…

Worst place ever to see any band
I’ll never go back there or VA. for that matter

  5. marcoesq Says:

yeah, I think ’99 was probably worse. crazy shit. VA sucks

  6. Guyute711 Says:

Went to VA Beach after Charlotte in 99 on a whim, Had a case of beer to sell and saw someone get busted for selling grilled cheese. Packed up my car and headed back to NY. It was a bummer but I think I made the right decision. It just sucked because I made the drive from Charlotte there the night before all twisted up and slept in a hotel parking lot. Unnecessary risk.

  7. voopa Says:

I didn’t feel the quakes consciously, but the larger one woke me up. Didn’t know why I was awakened until I checked the news an hour later.

  8. marcoesq Says:

VA ’99 had a fun Fee jam and okay 2nd set with a fun Birds and Tube.

That’s it. Def not worth the hassle.

  9. marcoesq Says:

    Scalper article: http://www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/industry/touring/confessions-of-a-ticket-scalper-billboard-1006351352.story

  10. JP Says:

va 99 type show in 3.0 would not be worth the hassle?

huge fee, terrific birds, rocking show overall

venue and asshole security is one thing, but musically a very worth it expereince

would love more adventurous music like this summer 12

forget the bullhorn and jam out fee like vb 99 instead

  11. kenny powers Says:

it really sucks when you work a physical job and accidentally wear wool socks to work. fuck.

  12. Spasm Waiter Says:

Wow. I didn’t know that about VA. That is brutal. I cannot imaging the band likes hearing about that shit either.

  13. marcoesq Says:

Definitely all relative. Now 13yrs later, I wouldn’t be doing the same things on lot anyways so worth it for sure in 3.0.

I’d just like to see ANYTHING jammed out these days. If I saw something jammed in the 1st set this summer, I’d lose my shit.

My buddy and I were just talking this weekend about how listening to Bethel 1 and 2 got us so stoked for the summer. Then they dropped Bethel 3. That Halley’s was a HUGE tease. 6 more came after it in 2011 and only 1 (Raleigh) even came close to extending it.

  14. marcoesq Says:

That’s probably why they don’t play VA Beach anymore, spasm.

  15. Calpain Says:

Phoam, congrats man that is awesome!

Radiohead in Camden? I missed the show in 08 due to classes, man I was bummed out about. Now for the ticket hunting

  16. El Duderino Says:

    what’s worse?

Virginia Beach Amp. and it’s fucked up beat down hassels or the Charlotte Bobcats?

  17. marcoesq Says:

Not to mention Va Beach’s sandy desert lot..choke on that shit

  18. halcyon Says:

    Kenny

9-12-99 sounds great! Thanks for your work on this.

  19. purplehumpbackwhale Says:

tried to say this yersterday, had internet trouble so idk if it posted but

can someone explain to me why everyone thinks trey cut off the MSG Cities?

i loved it during the show, afterwards everyone was saying he aborted the jam. so i avoided listening back for months, last night i watched the video ofit and god. it seems to me like a fairly well fleshed-out adventure. goes through several cool phases. the whole band fades out together at the end.

i really dont understand where this all came from?

  20. Mike in Austin Says:

a single incident and 5-8 years?

That is some seriously bad lawyering right there.

  21. Mr. Palmer Says:

Purp- because everything is Trey’s fault, didn’t you get the memo?

    PS. Fuck Trey!

I agree with you ftr. I liked that Cities a lot and felt it organically came to an end. I felt that in the room especially. On playback you can make a lot of things fit your own personal narrative.

  22. Corey Says:

Late to the party today but…
I too was at Va Beach ’98. Saw some of the worst behavior from the po po at a show. Beatdowns, chases, manhandling their own horses. Sucked. Terrapin however, was beautiful.

In other news. Go UK! 30-1. Feels like my college days in 96 and 98.

In still other news. For you Radiohead fans, they just released new dates. They’ll be at GreatWoods on 5/29.

  23. Robear Says:

Purps, you’re out of it. He didn’t cut off ‘Cities’, he cut off the rest of the run after ‘Cities’.

  24. snowbank Says:

    morning folks.

Congrats to Phoam and bek! Ah mahwidge.

I’s going to see the head of radio in Seattle. Too bad it’s at Key arena.

  25. tela'smuff Says:

rightfully so, the Denver Roggae gets lots of attention, but the Denver version is pretty exceptional.
