Reader’s Picks: Joe M.

8.24.12 (Ryan MacNeill)

8.24.12, Pelham, AL (Ryan MacNeill)

All selections and text by Joe M.

YEM” 12.28.93 II, Washington, DC

The first of many “Oh man, you really should have been there last night!” lot conversations. Some fiery work by Trey once the jam hits stride.

If I Could” 7.1.95 I, Mansfield, MA

I had this tape from the FM broadcast (RIP WBCN) in my car and played it exclusively for quite some time. Love this rendition which came early in the night.

Simple” 12.31.96 II, Boston, MA

Another WBCN tape that doubled my collection at the time. Not a noteworthy two-night stand in most people’s opinion. A highlight was night one when the sound went out and we couldn’t figure out if they were just fucking with us. This version of “Simple” is pretty compact but brings back fond memories of my beat up Toyota Corrola.

Timber (Jerry)” 11.28.97 II, Worcester, MA

My one and only time in the front row. Epic staring contests with Trey all night. This is the second set opener. Gets into a pretty dark place in the jam before coming back to the lyrics.

Maze > Shafty” 4.5.98 II, Providence, RI

My buddy’s first-show-going girlfriend dropped to the floor between us during the middle of this one. The lights and jam were a little too intense for her.

Piper > Dog Faced Boy” 12.8.99 II, Portland, ME

The night after everyone’s favorite CCCC ’99 jam [‘Halley’s Comet”]. General Admission in the whole building for those two nights. I have vivid memories of being really moved by “Dog Faced Boy” after an intense “Piper.”

Harry Hood” 7.6.00 II, Toronto, ON

In honor (honour) of the band’s return to Canada this summer.

Cool it Down” 7.29.03 I, Burgettstown, PA

A swanky take on the Velvet Underground cover.

Backwards Down the Number Line” 8.16.09 II, SPAC, NY

The second set opener from first summer tour closer of the return. Gets pretty far out. I wish they’d tack on an abstract jam to this tune again.

Undermind” 11.29.09 I, Portland, ME

Another song from ’09 and another one from Portland, ME? This ten tune thing isn’t as easy as Mr. Miner makes it look after all. Love the sonic freakout portion of this one though.

Lots of Northeast shows here Joe M. Nice!

Just returned home from the Black Crowes at the House of Blues in Boston. They were very entertaining, but the new guitarist ain’t no Luther Dickinson. They still put on a great show, though. I enjoyed it. I’m going to be very tired tomorrow…

  2. sumodie Says:

Gen adm Dog Faced Boy! Always felt Maine was extra special as we got the genadm shows that we couldnt get further south. Then we lost ground in 2009 by having reserved seats in the stands at the quad c (but then we reba’d to augusta’s gen adm gym). Cant wait for another gen adm maine throwdown come July!

Joe, you’d better hit Bangor. Thanx for the picks

  3. mmmhmm Says:

This SPAC ’09 #line has a nice jam to it. I remember thinking in the show that despite the always awkward beginning to the song, if it gets a jam like this every time, I could warm up to it. Alas, #line has continued to be an awkward tune nomatter where it is placed in a show. Can anyone show me a smooth segue into a song (#line) with such a choppy opening?

  4. MiA Says:

Love this list. Don’t think I’ve heard any of them.

    Happy Friday folks!

  5. angryjoggerz Says:

Happy Friday! Decided to give myself the day off, going to get some family time in after 3 week straight of either working at office, on road or at home – just wrapped up my big conference of the year and it was a great success, got my new president in front of China, they all like each other, the work goes on. Company about to fire about 1000 people, so glad I could get my stuff in there early and make a good impression. Gonna take my 3 year old out to a cafe for a “date”, get the cars washed, all that fun stuff.

Hope it is a great one for you all. And, I sincerely cannot wait until that first time we all walk onto a field somewhere and run into each other. That is the feeling I go for.

  6. angryjoggerz Says:

I also want to give a big shout to all the kind people on here who share and rec music – I have come up on so much stuff that I may not have otherwise, and that means a lot to me because I stay up on music. I know the stuff I tend to share is a bit.. urban.. but hopefully it connects with some of you as well. Life is too short to limit one’s intake of art.

  7. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

just a reminder, if you were interested in any of my drop[canvas]s from yesterday, the window should now be open again

go back to about page seven of yesterday’s post for the list of them

  8. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    or page five.

If peeps ain’t droppin during MAZE…it ain’t a real maze.

    GET OUT!

  15. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    solid list o’ tunes
    #eastcoastbias 😉

I remember walking into the venue 12.28.93, seeing the aquarium stage setup and being so confused about the whole thing.

great night and the first nye run show I ever caught. camped out page side about five people back because you could do that pretty easily then. we made it up to new haven the next night before other, begrudgingly less desirable but nonetheless still obligatory plans caused me to not make the trek further into new england for the end of the run.

but my appetite had been whetted and I knew that missing nye run shows was not something I would take lightly in the future.

  16. mudbuddy11 Says:

im listening to maze>shafty first. i love it when the band hits it hard enough to drop people. Dropped my wife on her first show, and full disclosure, its almost got me twice… but i blame extreme heat and lack of sustenance.

  17. HeadyBrosevelt Says:

piper>dog faced boy- fantastic- thanks for sharing.

  18. ren Says:

MAZE becomes infinitely more potent in the appropriate headspace….on relistens I can hear bits of the “heat” but it never really seems to translate well

  19. Angryjoggerz Says:

Maze is the tune that got me back into phish in 09

  20. Ryan C Says:

    Solid picks, love that Undermind.

  21. Kaveh Says:

Morning BBers…love the new set of picks @Joe.

I also had a friends girlfriend pass out at her first show during Maze! Greek Theatre 1993.

  22. Type III Jamming Personality Disorder Says:

    maze is the great equalizer

it’ll turn the quietest wallflower into a whirling dervish of delightful dance
and topple the sturdiest oak of jam jukes leaving those around shouting “wook down!”

  23. Snigglebeach Says:

Musta been some crazy shit on the scene that weekend in RI

My buddy pissed his pants on shrooms in that show. And later on I heard 2 of my other friends got separated lost their shit and got reunited on an ambulance ride out of that place.

  24. stapes Says:

    FRIDAY!!!!!!

  25. MiA Says:

It’s a goose face kickin’ friday today.
