TTFM: The Third Ten of 2012
These jams are getting increasingly hard to put in any logical order, but the bottom line is that here we are with ten more very strong pieces of improv from 2012—and Friday I’ll lay down ten more.
30. “Sand -> Nellie Kane” 6/8 II, Worcester, MA
An experiment in fusing robo-funk with bluegrass results in some very melodic groove interplay that evokes the feeling of late-’70s Grateful Dead dance jams.

29. “Carini” 8/31 I, Denver, CO
This was the first sign that IT was going down at Dick’s.

28. “Tweezer” 8/17 II, San Francisco, CA
The underrated “Tweezer” of the year moves from hard groove into filthy, storage-esque ambience.

27. “Ghost” 12/31 II, MSG, NY
Overshadowed by the golf gag, this “Ghost” is actually quite gorgeous.

26. “Golden Age” 7/3 II, Wantagh, NY
Jones Beach’s “Golden Age” migrates into a final passage of downtempo, psych rock.

25. “Simple” 8/18 II, San Francisco, CA
An abstract and melodic excursion in Bay Area psychedelia; a severely underrated jam.

24. “Wolfman’s Brother > LDB > Wolfman’s” 12.28 I, MSG, NY
Unconventional dance grooves merge with “Little Drummer Boy” tightly woven into pocket.

23. “Tweezer” 8.22 II, Kansas City, MO
A cathartic second set opener in the Heartland with quite the peak.
[audio:http://phishthoughts.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/2.02-Tweezer.mp3]***
22. “Piper” 7/8 II, Saratoga Springs, NY
This locked in version reprises the “Light” jam from earlier in the set.
[audio:http://phishthoughts.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/2.08-Piper-3.mp3]***
21. “Runaway Jim” 8/31 II, Denver, CO
Though not the most focused jam in the world, this “Jim” certainly hits some sweet spots along the way.

yeah no festival makes no sense. though i wouldn’t mind no festival this year and one next year instead since there’s already so much other good stuff this year.
BUt people hype SB IX because of the storage set. No storage set and it would be in festi 8 type league. Festival experience with some real fun sets.
And I do have bits of 7/3 in Rotation, and the Simple. But most likely because I was there.
7 regular sets and not one huge jam from any of them, can’t say that about any other fest except 8….
Good point re: saving festival for next year.
Incredible year if 2 legged summer ter>Dick’s>fall ter>30 anny run>MSG New Year (with not 1 but 2 runs since Dick’s to keep the band primed) comes true. Festival seems like overkill, it isn’t the ’90s after all.
IT:
Ya Mar
Waves
Bowie
Chalk Dust
Ghost
46 Days
SBIX had nothing on that level.
don’t forget halloween
IT was a blast.
maybe fests are better when they’re 2 days.
2days, 6sets, 1late night set. Can’t compete with the density of that shit right there. Unless it’s 2days, 5sets, 7hour set
IT Reba is the shit as well
7/3 was a damn good show for the time.
much rather see a festi end the summer than dicks. people are hyped on dicks bc of last year, but festi would be the righteous, old school way to end the summer. I guess dick’s take zero effort on their part vs a lot of effort. but shit man, 30 years.
sbix was a blast.
i just want the jams
the jams would be anywhere. dicks is cool and all, but its not a festi imo
Exactly Miner. A PHiSH Fest 30 years in the making would mean a lot. But if Phish Inc sez Dick’s ’cause of bigger margins/fewer headaches then so be it.
My heart was kind of set on a festival this summer though.
IT RnR>-7>Scents is pretty slick as well. Find myself going back to those 2 day of music quite a lot. As Miner said the Reba is the shit. Possibly best of any post first hiatus, IMO.
And the soundcheck and/or tower jam might be the best hour of music to come out of the whole weekend.
Ahhh, to relive those days.
There hasn’t been a bad show at Dicks. Not even an average show really. That’s why it gets hyped. It being Colorado helps.
I never got the economics of a phish festival. Since CB they seemed like the ultimate end of summer kick down to their fans for sold out shows, huge tickets and merch sales, etc. I always thought “all this entertainment for us … It’s all “free” in the ticket.
Greatest phish “dea”l ever. But if 35k show up to sbix, or they don’t sell out dicks … Throwing $5m at all the “entertainment” stuff seems really expensive.
Probably posting too early and haven’t thought about it.
IT ghost glowstick can never be topped (to me)
Was SBIX announced along with the Leg 1 dates in 2010?
Good grief.
SBIX day 3 was the best two setter until the FYF show at Dicks. Now it’s number 2. Don’t let the Canadiens steer the convo.
New enjoy by is April 1. My dad is in Cali next Friday. Is it possible for him to get one without trying too hard???
Bncb I’d take bethel 2 over it any day as a 2 setter and probably many more, like DTE
Anyone notice phish.com is down?
Also check this out. Not sure if its edited.
