MR. MINER'S PHISH THOUGHTS

11.2.1998 – E Center (T.Wickersty)

The first two rounds of this past weekend’s NCAA tournament were defined upsets, those improbable scenarios that actually come true. These occasions, when the unexpected unfolds, provide moments of real-life drama, and not without parallels to Phish’s forays into musical adventure without knowing what lies around the corner. The excitement of both live experiences are united by the unknown, and the essence of each connected moment. Nobody knows how things are going to turn out, and that is precisely why people flock to both events. Just as people live and die by that buzzer-beater or the dramatic overtime win, so do others quest for glory in crunchy Phish grooves and full-throttle improv. If one were to stretch this analogy a bit and ascribe “upsets” to Phish shows, they would be discussing those special nights in history when down-low venues blew up in shows that were far more than the sum of their parts. Today, let’s look back at three significant upsets in Phish history. (Click on orange dates to download each show.)

***

11.2.1998 – E Center, West Valley, Utah

Dark Side of the Moon

After the high-key Las Vegas Halloween shows, most people dispersed home across the country, while Phish moved on to a half-filled arena outside of Salt Lake City. Equivalent to a 15 seed beating a 2 in the first round, Phish played virtually an entire show before dropping into “Harpua” and beginning their trip to the Dark Side of the Moon. No one could believe what they saw, much like that little guy on Northern Iowa pulling up for a game-clinching, three-point dagger, falling the invincible Goliath of Kansas. Immediately making waves in the community before the next day, this Dark Side show will go down as one of the most memorable “upsets” in Phish history. (Regardless of your opinion on how it holds up on tape.)

***

9.14.999 –  BSU Pavilion, Boise, ID

9.14.99 – Boise, ID

After the Northwest run of Vancouver > Gorge > Portland at the beginning of Fall 1999, Phish headed inland to Boise, Idaho, before returning to the coast for a couple nights at Shoreline. A long and completely out-of-the-way trip, many fans opted for a personal day, and drove directly down I-5. But for those who made the trek across Orgeon and into Idaho were rewarded with one of the most outstanding shows of the year. In a sparsely filled gymnasium where anyone could walk right to the front of the stage, Phish threw down the gauntlet in the form of “Peaches > Bag > Gumbo.” “AC/DC Bag” provided one of the most  soul-touching moments of the entire year, peaking with surreal, layered melody and harmony, before galloping into the sunset in a “Crosseyed-esque” groove. Coupled with “Gumbo” in the now-famous combo, laced with a thick and extensive quote of Queen’s “Another One Bites The Dust,” this show became an instant classic, despite a relatively forgettable first half.

***

6.26.1994 – Municipal Auditorium, Charleston, WV

Amidst a particularly smoking run during June 1994, Phish found themselves playing West Virginia for the first time in their career, and they decided to commemorate the occasion. Known simply as the “GameHoist” show, this night would be remembered forever – but not for any jams. Instead, Phish opened the first set with “Kung” and went directly into a full-blown Gamehendge set, complete with narrations between the songs. And after closing the set with a blistering run-through of the lizard’s sacred chant, “Divided Sky,” the band decided to turn their show upside down. Having released “Hoist” three months earlier, Phish came out and played their album, top to bottom, as close to the original recording as possible. The band even included a “Split” jam after the album’s final track, “Demand,” which was spliced into the album from a 1993 recording. Phish concluded the set, as they did the album, with “Yerushalayim Shel Zahav.” This unsuspecting outing in West Virginia turned into one of the most unique shows in Phish lore history.

These are but three of countless “upsets” throughout Phish’s career. Share your own “upset”stories in the comment thread below.

6.2.09 -Jones Beach (W.Rogell)

With tour dates released for the summer, we have officially moved from the off-season into the pre-season of summer Phish. With dates ahead, life always feels just a little bit different, and sometimes quite a lot. Though the shows are not for two and a half months, the anticipation has already begun. Coming in waves, the events of the pre-season include mail order, hotel reservations, flight planning, on-sales, ticket trading, and the final phase which generally comes within a week of the first show – bouncing off the walls. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet. The game has just begun.

Phase I: “Mail” Order – The crown jewels of most everyone’s mail order this year will be The Greek and Telluride. Anyone who actually scores these shows early through the lottery will be livin’ excessively large with little care for the rest of the pre-season. All of the east coast shows should be pretty easy scores any way you cut it. The demand for Phish tickets has gone down the tubes in this latter era of the band’s career, with every show of 2009 (except a select handful) having virtually (and often actually) free tickets floating around the lot. Down in Miami, tickets were worth as much as the palm trees on Biscayne Blvd. would pay for them. The only tickets I see going for even face value on lot are Portsmouth, Merriweather, Deer Creek, and July 4th. All others should be easy pick-ups on the days of shows with little legwork.

This brings up the legitimate question, for other than special occasions, should fans bother to mail order and endure Ticketmaster on-sales just to pay the falsely inflated price for tickets amounting to $60 a stub? It’s always nice to have tickets in hand far before the shows, trust me, but if I told you how many tickets I ate in ’09 because I got crappy mail orders and literally couldn’t give them away – forget about it. Throughout last fall, and for most of last summer, tickets were hardly an obstacle to overcome. This entire situation is quite ironic considering the insane ticket-hype that plagued the community around Hampton and before Summer ’09.

But damn, those Greek and Telluride tickets are gold.

The Ticket Conglomerate

Phase II: On-Sales – As most fans will take the route of trying to score online or in person, the dates that tickets go on sale to the public represents the second hallmark of tour’s pre-season. In the super-saturated computer age where thousands flood online sites, the retro technique of getting your ass to an outlet has come back into fashion like Izod shirts. When Red Rocks tickets dropped last year, the most successful folks were those at regional counters pulling four-day passes. But regardless of your choice of method, these on-sale dates can be stressful mornings resulting in huge celebration and, often, equally huge frustration. This year, however, while The Greek and Telluride will be gone within sixty seconds, the proximity and abundance of all the east coast shows should make scoring these tickets rather feasible.

Plan Your Trips Wisely!

Phase III: Planning – Hotels, flights, and road trips…oh my! Planning Phish tour is an ongoing process that begins for some people before dates are announced and for others, the week before taking off. With a few cases of odd routing this year, Phish has left people with a couple “fly or drive for quite a while” situations, causing select flights to gradually fill up with Phishy travelers. In an extreme case in point, all flights from Oakland into Telluride, proper, on August 8th are already sold out; not to mention the quickly-filling flights to the surrounding mountain airports. Always open to last-minute improv, planning tour travel in advance can sometimes be half the battle. Hotels, rental properties, or campgrounds; flying, driving, or riding, whatever your choices may be, proper planning prevents poor performance. Many of our parents taught us that valuable lesson long ago, and never has it held more true than on tour.

Phase IV: The Excitement – Tickets are secured, your plans are made, and the sun is shining, what could go wrong? For a good while, the groundwork is in place for your summer run, and the adrenaline palpably begins to bubble. Everyday chores seem a bit easier, and colors seem to glow a tad brighter as your circled date approaches. That date you’ll jump in a plane, train or automobile, and head right out of town. During this final phase, one can be prone to sudden surges of energy, and memory loss mid-sentence, as your soon-to-be reality plays, involuntarily, inside your head. But soon enough, your “everyday” dissolves, and you venture out to the nomadic playground of Phish. For a month, a week, or a day, time is all relative. It is the ritual that holds ultimate importance – being present to receive the music, to experience the magic.

And these have all just begun, the phases of pre-season Phish.

7.22.97 – Official DVD Releas

Keeping up with the theme of summer Phish, here is the epic Walnut Creek ’97 show that featured one of the greatest second sets of a extensive, two-continent tour. After a lightening bolt near the top of the lawn caused an early end to set one, the band came out within a colossal storm and ripped a set for the ages. Included is one of their best transitions of all time between “Disease” and “Mike’s.” This second set is one flowing musical highlight, and often overlooked is the stunning “Harry Hood” encore. It’s hard to believe this show hasn’t been previously featured. Enjoy this gem!

The Greek Theatre – Berkeley, CA

After exactly one month off, Phish will return for their late-summer run at the improbable Berkeley, California locale, The Greek Theatre. One of the most beautifully set amphitheatres in the land will host Phish for a three-night party on August 5-7, kicking off the most anticipated week of the Summer 2010. On a hilltop at the University of California, the famous Bay Area icon holds only 8,500 people per night, making it the first truly tough ticket of the summer. With only these three shows on the west coast until the fall, fans will be coming from far and wide to see Phish’s return to The Greek. With a GA policy and limited floor space, you can bet on a Red-Rocks-esque scene of early arrivals rolling out tarps and staking claim on their crew’s space for the night. If two things are for sure, Berkeley will be a scene, and these shows will be something special.

Downtown Telluride, CO

After only one day off, Phish will fulfill the rumor of the winter by playing Town Park in Telluride, CO. On August 9 and 10, the Phish community will descend upon this mountain hamlet for the most anticipated shows of the summer. Returning to Telluride for the first time since 1991, these two days will have a throwback vibe, as the band plays at the base of the Rockies. Expect a festive atmosphere in town all weekend, as Phish unveils their mountain music inspired by the gorgeous environs. With tickets exclusively sold in two-day passes, only 9,000 people, total, will get in to what looks to be the most enchanted Phish experience of the summer. In the span of six days, Phish will play five shows of under 10,000 people, something that hasn’t happened since Japan 2000. Pretty…pretty…pretty…pretty cool.

6.19.09 Deer Creek (T.Caine)

Following the opening week of August, the scene will shift to the Midwest for one of the most classic combos of summer venues, Deer Creek and Alpine Valley. 2010 will make it nine consecutive summer tours, dating back to 1996, that the band will combine these two Midwestern jewels. With shows that, historically, almost never disappoint, this run is a no-brainer for standout Phish. With two shows in the cornfields and two in cheese country, the overnight route between the two venues is perhaps the most classic summer Phish drive that exists in the land. Maybe this year someone can figure out why the highways in Wisconsin are named with letters instead of numbers.

Jones Beach ’09 (W.Rogell)

And to close the tour – for now – the band will return to the east coast for two shows at Jones Beach in Wantagh, New York. This summer, Long Island will host the end of tour as opposed to 2009′s three-night stand at the onset of June.  On the original set of dates that circulated before the announcement, everything matched up exactly, but there were also two Radio City shows tacked onto the end. The absence of these dates on the official announcement either means that they fell through at the last minute, or they are still hammering out the details. I wouldn’t be surprised to see something else added the end of tour, as bringing the circus to the east coast for only two shows seems a bit odd. Time will tell.

Alpine Valley – East Troy, WI

Looking over the entirety of Phish’s 29-show summer, the clear concentration of shows lies in the northeastern corridor, garnering grumblings from the peanut gallery out west. Lest we forget, Phish, at their roots, is an east coast band, and after a five-year break, that is more true than ever. With their fans, friends, and families concentrated in the east, and a diminished desire to grow their fanbase nationally, Phish has no true incentive to come out west except to visit sublime venues. And that is exactly what they have been doing. Between Red Rocks, The Gorge, Indio, The Greek Theatre, and Telluride, you have the five most engaging runs of Phish 3.0, all, by modern standards, “out west.” Maybe we’ll see a west coast swing come fall, but somehow I wonder.

Regardless, Phish is locked and loaded for what hopes to be a ground-breaking summer. In all likelihood, the band will begin to carve a new direction for their music, and within these venues of August, the cream of the crop will rise to the top, as the Phish’s playing traditionally peaks on the back half of tours. With everything back in place, this will be the first tour we can truly take at face value, as an indication of what is to come. With the building blocks of 2009 out of the way, things couldn’t be more exciting.
