More Type II Trivia
Last week’s contest seemed to be fun for the whole family, so let’s get in one more round before tour starts next week! The rules, re-posted from last week, are as follows:
Phish’s jamming has often been described in layman’s terms as ‘type I’ (contained jamming that adheres to song structures and chord progressions) and ‘type II’ (open jamming that leaves any semblance of the song it came from). Today’s game centers on Phish’s open jamming. Below are ten audio clips – each a few minutes long, and here is the task. You can gain 3 points per audio clip – 1 for identifying the year, 1 for identifying the song, and 1 for identifying the date – for a total of 30 possible points. The winner will win their choice of a “TAB and the Tabernacle” CD or Mike Gordon’s “Moss,” to be delivered in the near future. Please email your entries with ten numbered lines, one for each guess. All entries must be emailed to mrminer@phishthoughts.com by 7 pm pacific on Friday (tomorrow) night. If multiple entries nail a perfect score, the earlier entry will take the prize. Without further ado, here are the audio clips. Good Luck!

Judging from the looks on their faces, Kimock and Holmes were often apparently sharing *hysterical* private musical jokes with each other during the jams. Not unlike some classical Indian musicians I have seen, which is more apt than you might suspect.
Somewhere here I have a CD of Kimock playing ragas on solo dobro. It is absurdly lovely.
yeah, i’d like to thank tiny baby jesus for helping me purchase travel protection so i can cancel my flight plans. got off the phone with priceline a bit ago and i have to call them tomorrow when the travel protection office is open so i can get my refund. flights are bit more expensive now because it’s closer to the departing date, but yeah i’m very glad i caught it now before i showed up to the airport on the 10th all excited to fly out only to find out that i was a ritard. serenity now.
I’ll second Kimock 12-29-01. Was at 12-31, but 12-29 is better!
Dope! @ yematt
A seed was planted.
A high school buddy who I looked up to had been turned onto Phish & GD. He knew it was cool but not much beyond that.
This seed sprouted and was soon a fledgeling. I had transformed.
I wanted to connect with it all. The next step was the HUGE free wsp show.
I was like, “how come nobody said anything? I mean, the Dead, yeah, but its still happening!?”
WSP turned out to be a mere diversion for me.
I got IT well before my first show, which made for a powerful experience when it (I?) finally came.
*xx* years later I’m still upside down.
What a long, strange trip its been.
I’m a custie n00b but its okay. I found my way here and I’m fine.
Ryder Cup is on live on ESPN
nah Rob…skipping ACL. Its streaming on IClips taboot 🙂
It’s interesting that you’re doing a jam trivia… and here’s why: When I hear a Grateful Dead bootleg, I can start to phone in on the year by 1) voices 2) song selection and then 3) distinct instrument sounds (keys… or 1 drummer, etc) with very few exceptions… like late 70’s Dancin In The Streets Jams or the Spanish Jams in Space. Otherwise, the jam is the last mode of recognition.
So, while I enjoy the game (and am completely frustrated by it… and eagerly anticipating the results to see how I did)
I must also point out, besides the savants and the completely obsessed… you have created just about the hardest thing imaginable! Good luck, and CONGRATULATIONS to the winner… lord knows I’ve tried!

what is this stream??
What are the chances of Eric Clapton sitting in for a Cream Halloween set? 1/100000000? I can dream, right?
funny you should say that Kevin… we were contemplating a Clapton cameo too… try to follow me-
Eric Clapton writes Laya about George’s wife.
Clapton plays lead guitar on WMGGW.
Duane Allman dies and Clapton goes into seclusion with his heroin addiction.
Pete Towsand gets Clapton out of the house and off smack to play the George Harrison organized concert for Bangladesh.
Trey sits in with a band at a Clapton concert.
Phish plays WMGGW and then plays Quadrophenia for Halloween.
The natural thought process would indicate that Phish is playing Layla and Assorted Love Songs this Halloween… Clapton cameo!!!!
