Miner’s Top 10 of 2012
It took a ton of deliberation, crossing out and remaking lists to come up with my favorite jams of 2012. I pondered not even trying to pare down Phish’s prolific year to a “Top 10″ because there are plenty more jams that are outstanding, but when it comes down to it, these are my favorite pieces of music from 2012. Don’t read too much into the rankings, as deciding on an order was quite the ordeal and I flip-flopped places many times before settling on this one. Enjoy the music and come back next Friday to check out the ten jams that I would put just behind these. A great weekend to all.

@sumo—Good stuff re: Tweezer and the home stereo test!!!!
I’m with you Stapes
Love the early melody Trey finds
Pre 10 mins I think
word. it just doesn’t sound like wolfman’s to me. It follows exactly in the flow of the Tweezer. It sounds perfectly placed to me with elements of the jam strewn in there. Very Tweezeesque to me. He even does that spiraling lick at the peak that he does in a handful of other Tweezer peaks. Rank it where you will, but there is nothing disjointed about it or tacked on. Shit is pure butter—best Tweeze of the era imho
Sometimes I prefer peanut butter (always crunchy) over butter.
Toast with butter and blackberry jam or toast with melted peanut butter and blackberry jam.
that’s cool. i didn’t say disjointed or tacked on. just said what i hear. i hear a great jam, but i also don’t hear Trey masterpieces or original brilliance. and to be clear, i’m not picking on Miner, cause i’m arguing with Stapes via text right now, and he’s my SCI loving brother.
Trey masterpieces = Dicks Light, Dicks CDT, Dicks Undermind.
“Thinking about getting a divorce and going on tour. Just kidding. Kinda.”
Classic.
Not saying anything, but it has it’s ups and downs. More up’s however. Was there now too long ago. Glad I let fate decide what to do and it came through in the end as always. Can’t help but smile, smile, smile. OK. Nuff from me. Gonna get myself in trouble. You all have a good one. Peace.
All I really know is that Tweezer was sickkkk
Yes @ Silly. Right around 9:10-15ish on the LP sbd is when the bliss begins.
i’m just happy i’m drinking Heady Topper, getting lifted, and talking Phish. my other option is watching Disney Junior and changing diapers.
AV Fee
it’s a 3.0 Trey masterpiece. laid back and in charge. refined and killing it softly. He doesn’t need to be out front to owning the piece.
Allgood. to each their own.
FTR, Fishman absolutely kills it during the currently discussed masterpiece. Trey playing aside.
Thx to MiA for reminding me to spin the 2nd Jam and remind myself how much I love it
On the home stereo the msg Tweezer peak sounds very organic and smooth; it doesn’t jarringly remind me of a tacked on Wolfman’s / Gin peak as it did on the buds
LB RnRoll is the other heralded 2012 jam that I wasn’t excited about until I put it to the full stereo test
Now I know what to do when everyone starts raving about a jam that leaves me lukewarm
So now how would I rank the msg Tweezer?
i’ll for sure agree that i love Trey laid back. he talked about that in an interview promoting Traveler. he hinted at it when he sat in with The National , and talked about recording with those guys, and it fits in with his studio talk of using all kinds of sounds, etc. he’s a master at using that whale (agin, i’m not technical) and building soundscapes during jams. it’s been maybe the biggest development in 3.0 Phish. so i love that, and it’s clearly demonstrated for a good portion of the beginning of the MSG Tweezer, up to 13mins at least, which is already better than most 3.0 Tweezer’s.
The lick Trey plays at 9:48 of that Tweezer will forever be emblazoned in my head
Stapes, running outdoors in nature while spinning phish is the BEST! Probably my fav way to listen to peak phish jams. Full body endorphin ecstasy
I just won’t be inviting the MSG Tweezer or LB RnRoll along for those runs; they’ll have to wait for that rare night when I get cracked out on phish vids for hours on end. Speaking of which, third Tweezer replay awaits…
Should’ve added that the home stereo test requires my complete attention. No half baked multitasking allowed
Kind of feel the 1st half of dicks Jim is a mess. The band pretty much takes it all the way down and restarts the jam and they finally get on the same page.
More than ever a trey masterpiece, said Tweezer is a 3.0 Phish masterpiece. Full band glory.
Silly. That was fun on the floor. Those lights were sick during tweezer.
I looked over and silly was eyes closed raging. Fun fun fun.
OK, one more for good measure. And i swear it will be brief.
On NYE I took too much too soon and didn’t make it to this part. First listen and have decided that it’s really good. Not on the top of the list, but very good. And the segue is amazing. Wish I would of caught it the first time. Good stuff. sand>wedge BTW. Peace and night.

Mike is key to MSG Tweezer, LB RNR>Ghost and BGCA 3 II. Must be heard on properly amplified and sized speakers to be understood.
Ahhhh. Finally home after teaching a climbing class.
Lift off->sculpin ipa->jamtopia
Kinda not but kinda looking forward to teaching winter camping skills in 20 degree snowy weather tomorrow.
I like apple butter.
@T3 – was that a pic of you ice climbing?
how about the best tease of 2012? Divided Sky in the Starlake Weekapaug? dropped on a dime.
@smuff
On fb? I posted some pics a couple of weeks ago from a day trip near home. Was just chatting with a climbing buddy about needing to get more swings in this season. Last year was a bust. This year we have some great ice… I just don’t have the tome I once did as a bachelor to put in 40+ days of ice a season.
